Your healthcare professional can work with you to navigate your insurance policy and can work on the prior authorization (PA) process. When a PA is required, the healthcare provider will need to submit information to the plan as to why a medicine is medically necessary for you. If your plan pays for weight loss drugs with an approved PA, your healthcare provider will need to submit information to the plan explaining why the drug is medically necessary for you. They will need to submit supporting information, such as weight, body mass index (BMI), and notes from your visit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your healthcare provider prescribes a GLP-1 for weight loss, they must prescribe the FDA-approved version for weight loss. \u201cThe trick to approval is making sure the prescription is sent for the approved weight loss version of the medication,\u201d said Dr. Brown, an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">obesity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> medicine specialist with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myobesityteam.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MyObesityTeam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cFor example, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tricare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> won\u2019t pay for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if it\u2019s prescribed for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">obesity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it will pay for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are both <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">injectable medications<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that contain <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">semaglutide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
