Can you take <\/span>Farxiga<\/span> and <\/span>metformin<\/span> together?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Jennifer Brown, MD, ABOM, ABFM<\/span><\/a>, a board-certified physician in obesity medicine and family medicine, and obesity expert for <\/span>My Obesity Team<\/span><\/a> of Lewisburg, West Virginia, says it\u2019s safe and very common for <\/span>Farxiga<\/span> and <\/span>metformin<\/span> to be taken together. \u201cThe two medications work by different mechanisms to lower <\/span>blood glucose levels<\/span>,\u201d she explains. \u201cIn addition, many patients who have diabetes are at risk for <\/span>heart disease<\/span> and <\/span>chronic kidney disease<\/span>, so it makes sense to use Farixga with <\/span>metformin<\/span> in diabetic patients. I routinely prescribe the two medications together, especially for patients who already have <\/span>heart disease<\/span> or <\/span>chronic kidney disease<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A <\/span>randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial<\/span><\/a> found that twice-daily <\/span>dapagliflozin<\/span> co-administered with <\/span>metformin<\/span> was more effective in reducing <\/span>blood sugar levels<\/span> in patients with <\/span>Type 2 diabetes<\/span> than just <\/span>metformin<\/span> treatment alone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When it comes to specific dosages, Dr. Brown prescribes both <\/span>Farxiga<\/span> and <\/span>metformin<\/span> at the lowest possible dosages, then increases them as needed to control <\/span>blood sugar levels<\/span>. \u201cThe maximum doses I prescribe for patients are <\/span>Farxiga<\/span> 10 mg daily and <\/span>metformin<\/span> 2,000 mg daily,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n
