The good news: Many cases of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/15285-acute-sinusitis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acute sinusitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> start to improve on their own within seven to ten days, even without antibiotics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, if your healthcare provider suspects a bacterial infection and prescribes doxycycline, you may begin to feel better fairly quickly. \u201cMost patients start to feel improvement within three to five days after starting doxycycline,\u201d Dr. Sarwar says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people feel better even sooner. \u201cThe medication usually starts to work in 48-72 hours, but it is very important to complete the entire course of the medication to make sure the bacteria are eradicated,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lcmchealth.org\/find-a-provider\/cherie-d-bragg-md\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cherie Bragg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a primary care provider with LCMC Health in New Orleans, Louisiana.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone\u2019s recovery timeline is different, but if your symptoms don\u2019t start improving after a few days on antibiotics or they worsen, please reach back out to your healthcare provider.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-take-doxycycline-for-a-sinus-infection\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to take doxycycline for a sinus infection<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking doxycycline correctly helps it work more effectively and lowers your risk of side effects. Here\u2019s what experts recommend:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Take it at the same time each day. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consistency helps maintain a steady level of medication in your body and makes it easier to remember your doses.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Swallow with plenty of water. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou must take it not just with a sip or two of water. You have to take it with at least six to twelve ounces of water,\u201d Dr. Oshinsky says. This helps prevent the pill from getting stuck in your throat or causing direct irritation to the esophagus, based on the acidic characteristics of the medication.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Stay upright after taking it. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remain sitting or standing for at least 30 minutes after your dose to avoid throat discomfort, Dr. Sarwar recommends.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Take it with food if needed, but avoid dairy and supplements.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You can take doxycycline with a light meal if it upsets your stomach. However, avoid taking it with milk, yogurt, antacids, or supplements that contain calcium, magnesium, iron, or zinc, since these can interfere with how well your body absorbs the drug.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Finish the full course.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Even if you start to feel better within a few days, take every prescribed dose. Stopping treatment early can allow bacteria to survive and cause the infection to return, or lead to the development of antibiotic resistance.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 id=\"potential-side-effects-and-important-considerations\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Potential side effects and important considerations<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with any medication, it\u2019s important to know the potential side effects of doxycycline before you take it. Doxycycline is generally well-tolerated, according to Dr. Smith.
