Be sure to discuss any medications you\u2019re taking with your healthcare provider.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-does-prednisone-make-you-sweat\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why does prednisone make you sweat?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mild increases in sweating and temperature regulation are normal with prednisone, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drkarawada.com\/about-dr-kara\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kara Wada<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, adult and pediatric allergist, immunologist, and lifestyle medicine physician based in Columbus, Ohio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPrednisone temporarily alters how your body regulates temperature, metabolism, and your autonomic nervous system,\u201d Dr. Wada says, which is responsible for involuntary actions like heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to these bodily changes, there are a few specific reasons why you might experience sweating on prednisone:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>High cortisol:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Per Dr. Manning, prednisone causes your body&#8217;s levels of a hormone called cortisol to rise, which helps the body prepare for stressful situations by doing things like increasing blood sugar, causing changes in body temperature, and increasing fluid retention. Prednisone basically overstimulates these reactions, she adds, and that can leave you feeling hot and sweaty.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>High dose:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cSymptoms tend to be dose dependent, meaning that higher doses and longer courses of treatment are more likely to lead to side effects [like sweating],\u201d Dr. Wada says.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Hormonal changes:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Hormonal shifts, like a rise in cortisol, can increase heat production and heat sensitivity in your body, leading to sweating, flushing, or feeling warm, says Dr. Manning. People with existing hormonal issues, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/hypothyroidism-vs-hyperthyroidism\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thyroid disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and women going through the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-perimenopause\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">perimenopausal transition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are even more prone to sweating as a side effect of prednisone, per Dr. Wada.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"how-does-prednisone-induced-sweating-present\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does prednisone-induced sweating present?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people taking prednisone won\u2019t find themselves constantly drenched in sweat. More often, sweating on prednisone is more intermittent or tends to occur at night, explains Dr. Wada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMost patients describe it as hot flashes or a sensation of sudden warmth, [usually] affecting the upper body, face, and neck,\u201d Dr. Wada says. \u201cSome people will have a more generalized increase in sweating, even without strenuous activity, but nighttime symptoms seem to be [the most] common and bothersome.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"managing-prednisone-induced-sweating\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Managing prednisone-induced sweating<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you experience sweating on prednisone, it\u2019s likely to happen quickly. According to Dr. Wada, sweating usually starts within a day or two of starting the medication, especially when higher initial doses are used to get inflammation under control.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news? For most people, sweating typically decreases once the dose is lowered and stops once the medication is discontinued, she adds. Often, prednisone is prescribed for short-term use. In the meantime, though, there are ways to manage prednisone-induced sweating.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Take your dose(s) early in the day,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests Dr. Wada, to minimize nighttime sweating. Healthcare providers often recommend early morning dosing, as prednisone can cause insomnia. Be aware, though, that some people benefit from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/can-i-take-prednisone-at-night-instead-of-morning\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nighttime doses of prednisone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so it\u2019s best to check with your provider about timing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Wear breathable clothing made of cotton, bamboo, or rayon, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and dress in layers so you can adjust your comfort as needed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Avoid other things that can trigger feelings of heat or sweating,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as spicy food, caffeine, and alcohol, recommends Dr. Manning.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Keep your environment cool <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(especially your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-sleep-better\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bedroom at night<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and stay hydrated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Use the lowest possible dose <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for the shortest possible time that still allows you to manage your condition while minimizing side effects, says Dr. Manning. Always seek medical advice before changing doses.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Take extra steps to keep your body and clothing dry. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Manning suggests changing your clothes more frequently, showering more often, and using deodorant powders or antiperspirants.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 id=\"when-to-call-your-healthcare-provider\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to call your healthcare provider<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, sweating isn\u2019t a serious side effect of prednisone, and it tends to be limited to the course of the medication. Once you lower your dose or stop taking it, prednisone side effects, including sweating, should subside.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, some people need to take high doses of prednisone or need to stay on it for a long period of time, depending on the condition they\u2019re treating. If you experience excessive sweating and feel like you can\u2019t continue taking it, Dr. Manning says it\u2019s time to speak with a healthcare professional.
