It is only available through a prescription.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf tiredness is getting in the way of your life or continuing for more than a few days, you should talk to your doctor,\u201d Dr. Bhattacharya said. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthcare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> providers may conclude that another factor could be causing fatigue, including some of these reasons below.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"medication-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medication <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tiredness is a reported <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effect<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Adderall, occurring in 2% of children and 6% of adults \u2013 consistently higher than placebo in randomized controlled trials, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drmio.com\/about\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amir Miodovnik<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a developmental-behavioral pediatrician with Pediatric Developmental Solutions outside Washington, D.C.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"rebound-fatigue\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rebound fatigue<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome people experience rebound fatigue \u2013 sometimes called the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall crash<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 as the medication wears off,\u201d Dr. Miodovnik says. \u201cAdderall increases levels of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dopamine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">norepinephrine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the brain to help with focus and alertness. When the medicine wears off, those levels can drop suddenly, leaving the brain temporarily below baseline levels.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dopamine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">norepinephrine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">neurotransmitters<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that play important roles in cognitive function, including alertness and attention. When their levels drop, a patient may experience fatigue. \u201cDuring this period \u2013 and for about one to two hours after the dose has worn off \u2013 people may feel low energy, emotionally flat, irritable, sad, or hungry,\u201d Dr. Miodovnik says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"skipping-meals\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skipping meals<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forgetting to eat may compound the effects of an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall crash<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Dr. Miodovnik says. \u201cSome may also hyperfocus or skip meals while the medicine is active, which can leave them drained once it fades,\u201d he says. \u201cAdding a small, short-acting booster dose later in the day can help smooth the transition.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"poor-sleep\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poor sleep<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 17% of children and 27% of adults in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2017\/021303s032lbl.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall XR<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported trouble falling or staying asleep. \u201cEven when the medicine is taken in the morning, it can still make it harder for the brain to wind down at night,\u201d Dr. Miodovnik says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Less sleep or lighter sleep can add up to daytime fatigue, he says. \u201cResearch also shows that stimulant medications can reduce sleep quality. These effects are usually strongest in the first few weeks after starting or changing the dose, and may improve as the body adjusts.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"co-occurring-conditions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Co-occurring conditions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Co-occurring conditions like anxiety, depression, or thyroid disorders can influence <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">energy levels<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.johnabroonmd.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John Abroon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a primary care physician in New York City.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cClinical observations consistently report that fatigue can result from timing, metabolism, and individual neurochemistry,\u201d he says. \u201cBecause of these multiple factors, increasing the dose independently is not recommended and could worsen <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and impair sleep.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"interactions-with-adderall\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interactions with Adderall<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking Adderall<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other drugs together can cause unintended interactions. Antibiotics like linezolid, multiple sclerosis drugs like ozanimod, and potent monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) \u2013 which are used to treat depression \u2013 are among the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meds<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can interact with Adderall.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sedatives like Xanax can also affect nerve communications in the central nervous system. By slowing brain activity, the drug causes a person to feel sleepy. However, because Adderall is designed to provide the opposite effect, combining these two drugs can lead to unpredictable reactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because Adderall releases <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">neurotransmitters<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the brain, it\u2019s important to inform a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provider if you also take an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antidepressant<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Selective <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), such as Prozac and Lexapro, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">norepinephrine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), including Cymbalta and Effexor XR, also increase <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> levels. This can lead to a potentially serious condition known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/serotonin-syndrome-symptoms\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If Adderall makes you sleepy, it\u2019s important to consult with a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provider first to determine what other factors may be causing your fatigue, Dr. Abroon says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you experience persistent fatigue, you should always consult your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provider, who will be able to assess timing, formulation, dosage, potential interactions, as well as any underlying medical issues,\u201d he says. \u201cLike with any other medication, you should have a direct line of open communication with your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provider.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, patients may need a dose adjustment or a different treatment plan if they experience sleepiness soon after taking the medication. At the same time, it is still active in their system, Dr. Bhattacharya says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"when-to-talk-to-your-healthcare-provider\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to talk to your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provider<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With any new medication, your body often needs time to adjust as it adapts to the changes the drug introduces. However, certain signs and symptoms shouldn\u2019t be ignored and may warrant a conversation or visit with a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provider.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou should see a doctor right away if you experience agitation, shakiness, palpitations, worsening anxiety, extreme sleep changes, irritability, or dizziness,\u201d Dr. Bhattacharya says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, some appetite suppression, finding it harder to fall asleep if the medication is taken too late, and feeling very awake and a \u201cbit wired\u201d can happen in many people, she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is a very effective medication but needs to be carefully monitored,\u201d Dr. Bhattacharya says. \u201cDose changes should be made only after consulting your doctor. Some serious <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are possible, so it\u2019s important to communicate with your doctor if you are noticing any unexpected changes upon starting the medication.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Abroon also advises prompt medical attention if you experience lethargy, mood swings, sudden behavioral changes, or chest discomfort. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mild effects such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dry mouth<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, temporary insomnia, or reduced appetite are considered normal, but ongoing or extreme fatigue is not,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tips-for-managing-adderall-induced-sleepiness\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tips for managing Adderall-induced <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sleepiness<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you find yourself feeling sleepy while <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taking Adderall<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there are several strategies you can try to manage the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drowsiness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and stay alert throughout the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Take Adderall<\/b><b> earlier in the day to avoid disrupting nighttime sleep<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Dr. Abroon says. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good and consistent sleep habits<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can help prevent daytime tiredness.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Eat balanced meals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Dr. Abroon says. Eating a healthy diet can help prevent energy crashes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Don\u2019t skip meals.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dr. Miodovnik says that inconsistent eating can leave a person feeling more drained once the medication wears off.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Engage in light to moderate exercise<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he adds.
