Janumet<\/span><\/a> is a brand-name prescription drug used to lower blood sugar levels in people with<\/span> Type 2 diabetes mellitus<\/span><\/a>. It contains two active ingredients \u2014 sitagliptin (a DPP-4 inhibitor) and metformin (a biguanide) \u2014 that work together to lower<\/span> blood sugar<\/span><\/a> by boosting insulin production and reducing glucose production in the liver. Janumet is also available in an extended-release version called<\/span> Janumet XR<\/span><\/a>, which contains sitagliptin and extended-release metformin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Like many brand-name medications, <\/span>Janumet<\/span><\/a> can be expensive. Unfortunately, there is no generic version available in the United States \u2014 but there are still ways to lower the cost of Janumet or get additional information about affordable alternatives.<\/span><\/p>\n

Is there a generic for Janumet?<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u201c<\/span>Janumet<\/span><\/a> is still only available in brand name,\u201d says <\/span>Blair Gingerich<\/span><\/a>, Pharm.D., Pharm.D., an ambulatory care pharmacist in northern Indiana. But the good news is that you might not need to wait long for a <\/span>generic<\/span><\/a>. Multiple generic drug companies will be allowed to bring a generic version of Janumet to market <\/span>in May 2026<\/span><\/a>. These generics will still need FDA approval, so the exact timing may vary.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Gingerich, your pharmacist is more likely than your prescriber to know when generic Janumet becomes available since U.S. pharmacies will receive a shipment of the generic drug as soon as it is released.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
