Trelegy was the first single-inhaler triple therapy approved for both asthma and COPD. Although it is approved to treat these lung conditions, it is considered a maintenance inhaler, not a rescue inhaler. This is because the three components of Trelegy don\u2019t provide immediate relief for breathing issues, such as worsening wheezing, cough, or shortness of breath.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-does-it-take-trelegy-to-work\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long does it take Trelegy to work?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/trelegy-ellipta\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trelegy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a single inhaler that contains two types of medications to help you breathe more easily: two long-acting bronchodilators, which help open up your airways, and a corticosteroid, which decreases inflammation in your lungs. According to Sorel Lira, MD, medical director of hospital services at<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/sahchicago.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saint Anthony Hospital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Chicago, reduction of inflammation and improvement of lung function from the steroid portion of Trelegy is usually noticed after about one to two weeks of consistent use.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-trelegy-works\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Trelegy works<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knowing how the three active ingredients of Trelegy work can help you understand how quickly the medication takes effect. It has similar effects on the lungs as umeclidinium and \u201copens the airways by relaxing the bronchial muscles,\u201d Dr. Lira explains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"factors-that-affect-how-quickly-trelegy-works\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Factors that affect how quickly Trelegy works\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How quickly Trelegy takes effect may vary from one person to another. Let\u2019s take a look at some of the factors that can impact how quickly Trelegy works.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"copd-vs-asthma\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COPD vs. asthma<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trelegy is approved to treat two conditions:<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/copd-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COPD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/asthma-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asthma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. According to Dr. Gray, people with COPD or allergic asthma tend to see the greatest reduction in flare-ups while taking Trelegy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"consistency-of-use\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consistency of use<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trelegy is meant to be used<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=b5a81d5a-4648-4c7a-951d-33c014a63c7e\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">once every 24 hours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, at approximately the same time each day. Using it consistently ensures that the proper amount of medication is circulating in your system. \u201cThis inhaler is meant for regular use, not only when symptoms appear,\u201d Dr. Gray reminds. \u201cTaking it every day as prescribed improves control over time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"proper-inhaler-technique\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proper inhaler technique<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.trelegy.com\/using-trelegy\/how-to-use-trelegy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proper inhaler technique<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ensures that Trelegy is delivered directly into your lungs, which improves the speed at which the medication takes effect. \u201cIt\u2019s important to exhale fully away from the inhaler before taking a long, slow, deep breath via the mouthpiece and holding the breath for three to five seconds,\u201d Dr. Lira explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr Lira\u2019s other tips include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only open the cover of the medication when ready to use.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Close the inhaler after each use.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rinse your mouth after every use to prevent<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/oral-thrush-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oral thrush<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (fungal infection in the mouth), which sometimes occurs with the use of oral steroids.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember to use your inhaler at the same time every day.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-does-trelegy-stay-in-your-system\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long does Trelegy stay in your system?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Lira, the three medications that make up Trelegy (fluticasone, umeclidinium, and vilanterol) each have different half-lives, ranging from 11\u201324 hours. The half-life of a medication is the amount of time it takes for half of the medication to leave your body. \u201cAfter stopping Trelegy, its effects typically wear off within one to two days, and symptoms may return shortly after that, depending on the individual\u2019s condition,\u201d Dr. Lira explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The effects of the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/bronchodilators\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bronchodilators<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (umeclidinium and vilanterol) can last from one to three days, according to Dr. Gray. \u201cThe steroid leaves the lungs more slowly than the bronchodilators, so its effect lasts longer between doses,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you stop taking Trelegy, you can expect symptoms to return within about two days, and these symptoms may continue to worsen for up to about two weeks if you were taking Trelegy consistently before stopping, according to Dr. Gray. \u201cKeep taking this medicine as prescribed unless your health care professional tells you to stop,\u201d she recommends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stopping Trelegy suddenly and without an alternative treatment plan can result in possible serious side effects. If your COPD or asthma isn\u2019t well managed, hospitalization may occur.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-bottom-line-on-trelegy-s-timing-and-results\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line on Trelegy\u2019s timing and results<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are taking Trelegy, you\u2019ll experience some immediate relief from your symptoms within an hour or so. But full response, including decreased<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/inflammation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inflammation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and increased lung function, won\u2019t be experienced until you\u2019ve been taking Trelegy for at least a week or two. It\u2019s essential to keep in mind that, although Trelegy can help open up your lungs so you can breathe more easily, it\u2019s not considered a rescue medication and shouldn\u2019t be used for quick relief from an asthma attack or serious difficulty breathing.
