It helps to know how long it takes for Trelegy to leave your system if you\u2019re concerned about side effects, running out of medication, or safely switching inhalers. This guide will cover how long Trelegy works, how it\u2019s eliminated from the body, and what you can expect when stopping the medication.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-does-trelegy-work\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does Trelegy work?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To understand how long Trelegy lasts, it helps to know how Trelegy works.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTrelegy contains three types of medicine, all of which help decrease airway swelling, keep airways open, and make breathing easier over time,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/engagewellnessnow.com\/contributor\/dr-pamela-tambini\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pamela Tambini<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Medical Director at Engage Wellness in Massachusetts. Those three medications are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fluticasone furoate, an inhaled <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/corticosteroids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">corticosteroid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ICS)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vilanterol, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/long-acting-beta-agonists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (LABA)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Umeclidinium, a long-acting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/muscarinic-antagonists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">muscarinic antagonist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (LAMA)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cICSs reduce inflammation inside the airways to help prevent flare-ups, reduce mucus production, and make airways less sensitive to triggers,\u201d Dr. Tambini says. Meanwhile, LAMAs and LABAs cause the airway muscles to relax, widen, and stay open, making it easier for air to move in and out of the lungs. This leads to improved airflow and reduced shortness of breath. Trelegy is not intended for use as a rescue inhaler.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-does-trelegy-stay-in-your-system\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long does Trelegy stay in your system?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each ingredient in Trelegy has a half-life, which is the amount of time it takes for half of the dose to leave the body.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fluticasone furoate has a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gskpro.com\/content\/dam\/global\/hcpportal\/en_US\/Prescribing_Information\/Trelegy_Ellipta\/pdf\/TRELEGY-ELLIPTA-PI-PIL-IFU.PDF\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">half-life of 24 hours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while umeclidinium and vilanterol each have a half-life of 11 hours. We\u2019ll use the longer half-life to determine how long Trelegy stays in your system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The maximum <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/trelegy-ellipta\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dose of Trelegy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is 200\/62.5\/25 mcg (fluticasone furoate\/umeclidinium\/vilanterol) once daily for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/asthma-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asthma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and 100\/62.5\/25 mcg once daily for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/copd-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COPD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you\u2019re taking a 100 microgram (mcg) dose of fluticasone furoate, 50 mcg will remain in your system 24 hours later. That 50 mcg amount gets cut in half in another 24 hours, leaving 25 mcg in your body after 48 hours. By 72 hours, or the third half-life, the amount reaches 12.5 mcg.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/trelegy-100-vs-trelegy-200\/\"><b>Trelegy 100 vs. Trelegy 200<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It takes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK554498\/#:~:text=Moreover%2C%2094%25%20to%2097%25%20of%20a%20drug%C2%A0is%20eliminated%20after%204%20to%205%20half%2Dlives.%20Therefore%2C%20after%204%C2%A0to%205%20half%2Dlives%2C%20the%20plasma%20concentration%20of%20a%20given%20drug%20typically%20falls%20below%20a%20clinically%20relevant%20concentration%20and%20is%20considered%20effectively%20eliminated.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">four or five half-lives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to eliminate most of a drug from your body. Two Trelegy ingredients, umeclidinium and vilanterol, will be gone from your system after about 44 to 55 hours, or about two days after the last dose. The anti-inflammatory fluticasone furoate takes about four or five days to leave.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"factors-that-affect-how-long-trelegy-stays-in-your-body\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Factors that affect how long Trelegy stays in your body\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The half-life of a drug is an average measurement. Some people eliminate Trelegy faster or slower than the average half-life based on how well their body metabolizes each ingredient. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/collaboratingdocs.com\/experts\/?\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Annie DePasquale<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a board-certified family medicine physician based in Washington, DC, says age and genetics can also play a role, but that the difference \u201cusually isn\u2019t dramatic\u201d and may mean someone metabolizes Trelegy one day faster or slower than another.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trelegy is mostly metabolized through the liver and kidneys. If you have medical conditions affecting these organs, Trelegy may linger in the body longer than usual.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking certain types of drugs with Trelegy, especially strong cytochrome P450 3A4 inhibitors, may increase the amount of Trelegy that enters the bloodstream, which could cause it to stay in your system for a longer period of time. Tell your healthcare provider about all the over-the-counter and prescription drugs and supplements you currently take so they can screen for potential drug interactions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-happens-if-you-stop-taking-trelegy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What happens if you stop taking Trelegy?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you stop taking Trelegy, three things are likely to happen:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breathing problems can return after 24 hours, but may take longer to appear.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most Trelegy side effects fade within four or five days.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New symptoms can occur temporarily if Trelegy is stopped too quickly.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMost <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/trelegy-ellipta-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of Trelegy Ellipta<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like throat pain or irritation, hoarseness, or a mild cough, resolve within a few days of stopping. However, steroid-related effects such as oral thrush or mild immune suppression can take a little longer to clear up,\u201d Dr. DePasquale says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talk to a healthcare professional before you stop taking Trelegy. You may need to slowly taper the dose to gradually stimulate your body\u2019s natural production of cortisol, the so-called stress hormone. The corticosteroid in Trelegy mimics cortisol, so the body decreases cortisol production in the adrenal glands.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stopping Trelegy cold-turkey doesn\u2019t give the body enough time to increase natural cortisol to healthy levels. This can lead to symptoms of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niddk.nih.gov\/health-information\/endocrine-diseases\/adrenal-insufficiency-addisons-disease\/symptoms-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adrenal insufficiency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as fatigue, weakness, poor appetite, weight loss, abdominal pain, and other gastrointestinal symptoms, low blood sugar, poor mental health, and more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf Trelegy was used at high doses for an extended time, it can take several weeks for the body\u2019s hormone balance and airway inflammation to fully normalize,\u201d Dr. DePasquale says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, if Trelegy causes severe side effects, your healthcare provider may need you to stop taking the medication immediately. The best way to do this safely is under medical guidance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also important to make a plan for managing your COPD or asthma symptoms without Trelegy when stopping this medication. \u201cStopping suddenly without a replacement plan can cause symptoms to rebound or worsen. The danger isn\u2019t from withdrawal. It\u2019s from losing the control that Trelegy provided. Patients should always talk with their prescribing clinician before discontinuing because the safest approach may be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/trelegy-ellipta-alternatives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">switching to another inhaler<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d Dr. DePasquale advises.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"when-to-see-a-doctor-about-trelegy-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to see a doctor about Trelegy side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you stop taking Trelegy due to adverse side effects, seek medical advice if the following occurs:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worsening shortness of breath<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects persist for several days after your last Trelegy dose.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects get worse after stopping Trelegy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COPD or asthma symptoms quickly resurface.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You want to use a different type of inhaler after Trelegy.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trelegy can cause pneumonia, a fungal infection in the mouth called thrush, and a weakened immune system, among other side effects. Stopping Trelegy may not be enough to treat these issues. Talk to a healthcare provider about safe and effective treatments that won\u2019t interact with Trelegy as it leaves your system.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you think you may have taken too much Trelegy, call your healthcare provider or the Poison Control Hotline <\/span><b>1-800-222-1222<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. right away. Seek emergency care if you notice signs of a heart problem, including chest pain, difficulty breathing, and a rapid heartbeat.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"bottom-line\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottom line<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trelegy is a once-daily inhaler that provides therapeutic benefits for 24 hours, but a decreasing amount of medication remains in the body for several days. Expect your COPD and asthma symptoms to increase and Trelegy inhaler side effects to disappear within two to five days of stopping the medication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t stop taking Trelegy without talking to a healthcare provider.
