When combined with diet and physical activity changes, brand-name <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/wegovy\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the following purposes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/tag\/weight-loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight loss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in patients 12 years or older with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/obesity-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">obesity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Body weight reduction in adults who are overweight and have at least one weight-related condition, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/hypertension-treatments-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/sleep-apnea-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">obstructive sleep apnea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (OSA), or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/type-1-vs-type-2-diabetes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardiovascular risk reduction in adults with heart disease and either obesity or overweight<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment of noncirrhotic metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) in adults with moderate to advanced liver fibrosis<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/glp-1-agonists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (GLP-1 receptor agonist). Since the FDA recently approved generic versions of two other GLP-1s, Saxenda and Victoza, it\u2019s natural to wonder whether Wegovy might be next. Here\u2019s what you need to know about the current state of the availability, cost, and more of Wegovy generics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-there-a-generic-for-wegovy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is there a generic for Wegovy?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are currently no generic versions of GLP-1s with the active ingredient semaglutide. These prescription drugs include Wegovy, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ozempic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/rybelsus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rybelsus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Exenatide and liraglutide are the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/generic-glp-1\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only generic GLP-1s currently available<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Two brand-name drugs contain liraglutide: a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/liraglutide-weight-management\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">liraglutide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/fda-approves-first-generic-glp-1-for-weight-loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">generic Saxenda<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/liraglutide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">liraglutide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/victoza-generic-approval\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">generic Victoza<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-s-the-difference-between-wegovy-and-compounded-semaglutide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s the difference between Wegovy and compounded semaglutide?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At first glance, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/buy-compounded-semaglutide-online\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">compounded semaglutide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might appear to be a generic version of Wegovy. However, compounded semaglutide has not undergone the same rigorous FDA approval process that Wegovy has or that its generic counterpart will. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCompounded semaglutide comes with safety and quality risks: variable potency, contamination, unapproved salt forms, et cetera,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gutsygirlmd.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supriya Rao<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, gastroenterologist, managing partner at Integrated Gastroenterology Consultants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are three key differences between Wegovy and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-compounded-semaglutide-made-of\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">compounded semaglutide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Approval: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2025\/215256s024lbl.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA approved<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but compounded semaglutide is not.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Dosage: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy comes in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/wegovy\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pre-filled pens<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with automatic dosing. By contrast, compounded semaglutide comes in vials that usually require patients to accurately measure and fill syringes with the correct dose.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Safety:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In September 2025, the FDA issued <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/postmarket-drug-safety-information-patients-and-providers\/fdas-concerns-unapproved-glp-1-drugs-used-weight-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that compounded semaglutide is risky because these products do not undergo the FDA\u2019s review for safety, effectiveness, and quality before being offered to patients. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lilly.com\/medicines\/safety\/counterfeit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eli Lilly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the manufacturer of Zepbound and Mounjaro (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/tirzepatide-vs-semaglutide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tirzepatide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), also warns about the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/are-compounded-glp-1s-safe\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of what it calls \u201ccounterfeit\u201d mass-produced compounded medications.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"what-to-know-about-compounded-semaglutide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What to know about compounded semaglutide\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/compounding-pharmacy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compounding pharmacies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> create customized medications from scratch to meet patients&#8217; specific health needs. For instance, when someone is allergic to the preservative in a critical medication, a compounding pharmacist can make a version of the medication with a different preservative.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/compounded-semaglutide-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compounded semaglutide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, then, contains the same active ingredient as Wegovy, but inactive ingredients and dosage might be different. Because the formulation isn\u2019t the same one used in clinical trials, compounded semaglutide injections can\u2019t be approved by the FDA. This doesn\u2019t mean all compounded drugs are unsafe, but it does mean their safety, effectiveness, and side effect rates cannot be guaranteed. Some<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK562881\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experts suggest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that mass-produced compounded drugs pose additional risk because the process skips over personal communication between the patient and pharmacist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottom line: Wegovy and compounded semaglutide both contain the same GLP-1. However, Wegovy is FDA approved and manufactured in a controlled, standardized formula, while compounded semaglutide formulas vary and are not FDA approved.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"wegovy-vs-compounded-semaglutide-availability\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy vs. compounded semaglutide availability<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soon after Ozempic and Wegovy were released, GLP-1s became so popular that pharmacies could not keep them on the shelves. Because of these drug shortages, compounded semaglutide was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wegovy-backorder\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">temporarily allowed to be compounded<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In February 2025, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-safety-and-availability\/fda-clarifies-policies-compounders-national-glp-1-supply-begins-stabilize\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the semaglutide shortage <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had been resolved. Pharmacies were required to stop distributing compounded semaglutide by April 22, and outsourcing facilities were required to stop distribution by May 22 that same year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compounded semaglutide may still be available, but it is no longer legally allowed to be a \u201ccopy\u201d of Wegovy. Some manufacturers are working around this rule by making compounded semaglutide in a different dosage than Wegovy or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/human-drug-compounding\/fda-alerts-health-care-providers-compounders-and-patients-dosing-errors-associated-compounded\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with an additional ingredient<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as vitamin B-12 or B-6. Novo Nordisk\u2019s last patent<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for Wegovy<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/166048\/download\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is set to expire in 2041<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but healthcare providers can\u2019t predict exactly when the generic version will be released after that,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> according to Dr. Ali.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/are-generic-drugs-as-good-as-brand-name-medicines\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generic versions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of medications become available only after the brand-name drug\u2019s patent and exclusivity rights have expired. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The holdup is not safety or demand, but rather intellectual property and regulatory timelines that make sure the company recoups its investment before competitors can make lower cost versions,\u201d Dr. Rao explains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-save-on-wegovy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to save on Wegovy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy does not have a more affordable generic version, but there are still ways to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/brand-name-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">save on brand-name drugs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some people <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/save-on-wegovy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">save on Wegovy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by applying for financial assistance programs, switching insurance companies, or using savings cards or coupons.
