When combined with diet and physical activity changes, brand-name <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/wegovy\/what-is\">Wegovy<\/a> is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the following purposes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/tag\/weight-loss\/\">Weight loss<\/a> in patients 12 years or older with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/obesity-statistics\/\">obesity<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Body weight reduction in adults who are overweight and have at least one weight-related condition, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/hypertension-treatments-and-medications\">high blood pressure<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/sleep-apnea-treatment-and-medications\">obstructive sleep apnea<\/a> (OSA), or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/type-1-vs-type-2-diabetes\/\">Type 2 diabetes<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Cardiovascular risk reduction in adults with heart disease and either obesity or overweight<\/li>\n<li>Treatment of noncirrhotic metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) in adults with moderate to advanced liver fibrosis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Wegovy is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/glp-1-agonists\">glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist<\/a> (GLP-1 receptor agonist). Since the FDA recently approved generic versions of two other GLP-1s, Saxenda and Victoza, it\u2019s natural to wonder whether Wegovy might be next. Here\u2019s what you need to know about the current state of the availability, cost, and more of Wegovy generics.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-there-a-generic-for-wegovy\">Is there a generic for Wegovy?<\/h2>\n<p>There are currently no generic versions of GLP-1s with the active ingredient semaglutide. These prescription drugs include Wegovy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ozempic\">Ozempic<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/rybelsus\">Rybelsus<\/a>. Exenatide and liraglutide are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/generic-glp-1\/\">only generic GLP-1s currently available<\/a>. Two brand-name drugs contain liraglutide: a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/liraglutide-weight-management\">liraglutide<\/a> known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/fda-approves-first-generic-glp-1-for-weight-loss\/\">generic Saxenda<\/a>, and another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/liraglutide\">liraglutide<\/a> known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/victoza-generic-approval\/\">generic Victoza<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-s-the-difference-between-wegovy-and-compounded-semaglutide\">What\u2019s the difference between Wegovy and compounded semaglutide?<\/h2>\n<p>At first glance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/buy-compounded-semaglutide-online\/\">compounded semaglutide<\/a> might appear to be a generic version of Wegovy. However, compounded semaglutide has not undergone the same rigorous FDA approval process that Wegovy has or that its generic counterpart will. \u201cCompounded semaglutide comes with safety and quality risks: variable potency, contamination, unapproved salt forms, et cetera,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gutsygirlmd.com\/\">Supriya Rao<\/a>, MD, gastroenterologist, managing partner at Integrated Gastroenterology Consultants.<\/p>\n<p>There are three key differences between Wegovy and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-compounded-semaglutide-made-of\/\">compounded semaglutide<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Approval: <\/b>Wegovy is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2025\/215256s024lbl.pdf\">FDA approved<\/a>, but compounded semaglutide is not.<\/li>\n<li><b>Dosage: <\/b>Wegovy is available as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/fda-approval-wegovy-pill\/\">oral tablets<\/a> or as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/wegovy\/dosage\">pre-filled pens<\/a> with automatic dosing. By contrast, compounded semaglutide comes in vials that usually require patients to accurately measure and fill syringes with the correct dose.<\/li>\n<li><b>Safety:<\/b> In September 2025, the FDA issued <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/postmarket-drug-safety-information-patients-and-providers\/fdas-concerns-unapproved-glp-1-drugs-used-weight-loss\">a statement<\/a> that compounded semaglutide is risky because these products do not undergo the FDA\u2019s review for safety, effectiveness, and quality before being offered to patients. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lilly.com\/medicines\/safety\/counterfeit\">Eli Lilly<\/a>, the manufacturer of Zepbound and Mounjaro (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/tirzepatide-vs-semaglutide\/\">tirzepatide<\/a>), also warns about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/are-compounded-glp-1s-safe\/\">risks<\/a> of what it calls \u201ccounterfeit\u201d mass-produced compounded medications.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"what-to-know-about-compounded-semaglutide\">What to know about compounded semaglutide<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/compounding-pharmacy\/\">Compounding pharmacies<\/a> create customized medications from scratch to meet patients&#8217; specific health needs. For instance, when someone is allergic to the preservative in a critical medication, a compounding pharmacist can make a version of the medication with a different preservative.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/compounded-semaglutide-side-effects\/\">Compounded semaglutide<\/a>, then, contains the same active ingredient as Wegovy, but inactive ingredients and dosage might be different. Because the formulation isn\u2019t the same one used in clinical trials, compounded semaglutide injections can\u2019t be approved by the FDA. This doesn\u2019t mean all compounded drugs are unsafe, but it does mean their safety, effectiveness, and side effect rates cannot be guaranteed. Some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK562881\/\">experts suggest<\/a> that mass-produced compounded drugs pose additional risk because the process skips over personal communication between the patient and pharmacist.<\/p>\n<p>Bottom line: Wegovy and compounded semaglutide both contain the same GLP-1. However, Wegovy is FDA approved and manufactured in a controlled, standardized formula, while compounded semaglutide formulas vary and are not FDA approved.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"wegovy-vs-compounded-semaglutide-availability\">Wegovy vs. compounded semaglutide availability<\/h3>\n<p>Soon after Ozempic and Wegovy were released, GLP-1s became so popular that pharmacies could not keep them on the shelves. Because of these drug shortages, compounded semaglutide was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wegovy-backorder\/\">temporarily allowed to be compounded<\/a>. In February 2025, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-safety-and-availability\/fda-clarifies-policies-compounders-national-glp-1-supply-begins-stabilize\">FDA announced<\/a> that the semaglutide shortage had been resolved. Pharmacies were required to stop distributing compounded semaglutide by April 22, and outsourcing facilities were required to stop distribution by May 22 that same year.<\/p>\n<p>Compounded semaglutide may still be available, but it is no longer legally allowed to be a \u201ccopy\u201d of Wegovy. Some manufacturers are working around this rule by making compounded semaglutide in a different dosage than Wegovy or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/human-drug-compounding\/fda-alerts-health-care-providers-compounders-and-patients-dosing-errors-associated-compounded\">with an additional ingredient<\/a> such as vitamin B-12 or B-6. Novo Nordisk\u2019s last patent for Wegovy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/166048\/download\">is set to expire in 2041<\/a>, but healthcare providers can\u2019t predict exactly when the generic version will be released after that, according to Dr. Ali.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/are-generic-drugs-as-good-as-brand-name-medicines\/\">Generic versions<\/a> of medications become available only after the brand-name drug\u2019s patent and exclusivity rights have expired. \u201cThe holdup is not safety or demand, but rather intellectual property and regulatory timelines that make sure the company recoups its investment before competitors can make lower cost versions,\u201d Dr. Rao explains.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-save-on-wegovy\">How to save on Wegovy<\/h2>\n<p>Wegovy does not have a more affordable generic version, but there are still ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/brand-name-drugs\/\">save on brand-name drugs<\/a>. Some people <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/save-on-wegovy\/\">save on Wegovy<\/a> by applying for financial assistance programs, switching insurance companies, or using savings cards or coupons. For instance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/wegovy\">a free SingleCare coupon<\/a> can lower the cash price of Wegovy from <span class=\"scdp scdp-unc-price\">$1,619<\/span> to <span class=\"scdp scdp-sc-price\">$1,155<\/span> for 30, 1.5 mg tablets. Exact savings may depend on your location and pharmacy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf cost is an issue, it&#8217;s a good idea to have that conversation with your doctor,\u201d Dr. Rao says.
