They\u2019re both self-injected glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, so they work in similar ways. Some people wonder which is better for weight loss, so let\u2019s take a closer look at the key differences between Saxenda and Ozempic.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-s-the-difference-between-saxenda-and-ozempic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s the difference between Saxenda and Ozempic?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saxenda and Ozempic belong to the same drug class (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/glp-1-agonists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), but they have different active ingredients: liraglutide in Saxenda and semaglutide in Ozempic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/nutrition\/articles\/10.3389\/fnut.2024.1398059\/full\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">molecular level<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, liraglutide and semaglutide are nearly identical to each other and to the GLP-1 hormone that the body naturally produces. Tiny differences in structure end up making a significant impact on how long each drug lasts in the body and the average amount of weight people lose while taking them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"dosage-differences\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dosage differences<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The body metabolizes Saxenda much faster than it metabolizes Ozempic. Therefore, Saxenda is taken as a daily injection, whereas Ozempic is a weekly one. Both are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-use-ozempic-pen\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">self-administered<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under the skin via an injection pen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA once-weekly injection of semaglutide is easier for many, but a once daily liraglutide dose could be best for people who\u2019ve had issues with side effects from semaglutide or prefer more flexibility,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/rekha-kumar-m-d-m-s-70b481237\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rekha Kumar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, an endocrinologist and obesity medicine specialist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with all GLP-1s, Saxenda and Ozempic start at a low dose to reduce side effects. The dose is gradually increased under the guidance of the healthcare provider until the maximum tolerable dose is reached.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-chart\/\"><b>Ozempic dosage chart<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Saxenda, that means starting at 0.6 mg per day for one week and increasing the dose by 0.6 mg every week thereafter. The maximum dose is 3 mg, so it\u2019s possible to reach this quantity in five weeks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic is titrated at a much slower pace because it stays in the body longer. The starting dose is 0.25 mg each week. The healthcare provider will gradually increase the dose, with at least one month in between dosage increases. It takes at least four months to reach the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-max-dose\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">maximum dose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 2 mg, although some people continue to take a smaller dose, such as 1 mg weekly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With either medication, your healthcare provider may recommend a slower dosing schedule if your body needs a little more time to adjust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-missed-dose\/\"><b>What happens if you miss a dose of Ozempic?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"fda-approved-uses\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA-approved uses<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Saxenda for weight loss and chronic weight management. Specifically, Saxenda is approved to treat adults with obesity and adolescents 12 years and older who weigh more than 60 kilograms (about 132 pounds) and have been diagnosed with obesity. It\u2019s also approved for adults who are considered overweight if they also have a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK574535\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight-related health condition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as high blood pressure, obstructive sleep apnea, gallstones, osteoarthritis, or heart disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic is approved to control blood sugar levels in adults with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/resources\/diabetes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when used with a healthy diet and exercise. The FDA has also approved Ozempic for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-and-heart-disease\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prevention of major adverse cardiovascular events<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (MACE), including heart attack and stroke, in adults with both cardiovascular disease and Type 2 diabetes. Adults with chronic kidney disease and Type 2 diabetes can also be prescribed Ozempic to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death and further kidney damage. Ozempic is not FDA approved for weight loss, but healthcare providers often prescribe it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/off-label-prescription-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-label<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for this use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also important to note that Saxenda isn\u2019t the only liraglutide product available, nor is Ozempic the only option for semaglutide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the brand name <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/victoza\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Victoza<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, liraglutide is FDA approved for blood sugar control in adults with Type 2 diabetes, along with diet and exercise, and to reduce the risk of MACE in adults with both Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Semaglutide is FDA approved under the brand name <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/wegovy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for weight loss and weight maintenance (along with diet and exercise) in people 12 years and older who have been diagnosed with obesity and in adults who are considered overweight and have at least one weight-related medical condition. Known simply as liraglutide, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/fda-approves-first-generic-glp-1-for-weight-loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">generic Saxenda<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is much more affordable than the brand-name medication. We\u2019ll discuss costs in more detail below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generic Ozempic is not yet available and may not hit the market until its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.novonordisk.com\/content\/dam\/nncorp\/global\/en\/investors\/irmaterial\/annual_report\/2025\/novo-nordisk-annual-report-2024.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. patent expires in 2032<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The patent for Wegovy is also set to expire in 2032.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-much-weight-can-you-lose-on-saxenda\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much weight can you lose on Saxenda?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5358074\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have concluded that liraglutide (Saxenda) results in an average of 9 to 13 pounds of weight loss over 56 weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2015, the SCALE Obesity and Prediabetes study group found that two-thirds of participants lost at least 5% of their body weight while taking liraglutide, and one-third lost at least 10%. An <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/ijo2013120\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">additional SCALE study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> confirmed that finding, recording an average weight loss of about 6% after 56 weeks of taking liraglutide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The greatest amount of weight loss recorded by liraglutide researchers occurred in a 2024 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2077-0383\/13\/20\/6121\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turkish study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where participants lost an average of about 41 pounds over 24 weeks.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-much-weight-can-you-lose-on-ozempic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much weight can you lose on Ozempic?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9486455\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">researchers from Mayo Clinic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, nearly 9 out of every 10 people can expect to lose at least 5% of their body weight after taking semaglutide (Ozempic) for six months, and about half will lose 10% or more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Higher doses of semaglutide given over a longer period of time tended to result in the most weight loss. Participants in a 68-week study lost an average of about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa2032183\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">34 pounds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while on 2.4 mg of semaglutide. This equaled a weight loss of about 15%\u201317%. In contrast, the placebo (inactive treatment) group lost about 6 pounds on average, or about 2% of their body weight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41591-024-02996-7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that people taking semaglutide lost an average of 10% of their body weight in the first 65 weeks, and the loss was maintained until the study ended at more than 200 weeks. In contrast, the placebo group lost 1.5% of their body weight, and the weight loss plateaued at about 26 weeks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oral semaglutide (sold under the brand name <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/rybelsus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rybelsus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) has also been studied, but it tends to result in less weight loss than injectable semaglutide. For example, one study found that 14 mg of oral semaglutide per week for 52 weeks resulted in an average of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/diabetesjournals.org\/care\/article\/42\/12\/2272\/36229\/Oral-Semaglutide-Versus-Empagliflozin-in-Patients\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10 pounds lost<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-saxenda-better-than-ozempic-for-weight-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is Saxenda better than Ozempic for weight loss?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies tend to conclude that Ozempic (semaglutide) is more effective for weight loss than Saxenda (liraglutide):<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35015037\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2022 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that people typically lost around 16% of their body weight on semaglutide compared to 6% body weight on liraglutide.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2823644\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cleveland Clinic researchers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that people lost an average of 5% body weight with semaglutide and 2% with liraglutide after one year.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The results of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/37203328\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2023 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggest that semaglutide is about twice as effective as liraglutide for weight loss.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/pharmacology\/articles\/10.3389\/fphar.2025.1438318\/full\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2025 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frontiers in<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pharmacology <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meta-analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> noted a \u201csignificant weight reduction\u201d when people switched from liraglutide to semaglutide.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Occasionally, studies find no meaningful difference in weight loss between the two drugs. For example, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12095202\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2025 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hospital Pharmacy <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found people lost an average of 9 pounds on liraglutide and 7 pounds on semaglutide. That said, most evidence tips in Ozempic\u2019s favor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA final point most people overlook: Semaglutide has demonstrated sustained weight reduction benefits even after treatment ends, provided lifestyle changes are maintained, whereas weight regain tends to be faster after liraglutide discontinuation,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/healthon.com\/pages\/about-us\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rasoul Montazeri<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a triple board-certified physician based in Irvine, California. \u201cThis durability of effect makes semaglutide a transformative tool in long-term obesity care.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"saxenda-vs-ozempic-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saxenda vs. Ozempic side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastrointestinal issues are the most common side effects of GLP-1 medications like Saxenda and Ozempic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBoth can cause nausea, GI upset, or constipation, but I see liraglutide patients more often report daily low-grade nausea, whereas semaglutide tends to cause more pronounced symptoms early on that taper with dose titration. Individual tolerance plays a large role here,\u201d Dr. Montazeri says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In clinical trials, GI side effects were typically reported more often with Saxenda versus with Ozempic. \u201cWith liraglutide, side effects can feel a little milder but happen more consistently since it\u2019s taken daily,\u201d Dr. Kumar explains. \u201cPatients should always feel comfortable expressing concerns about side effects because there is a lot your provider can do to support you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saxenda and Ozempic share some serious side effects, such as allergic reactions, gallbladder problems, and acute <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/pancreatitis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pancreatitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Animal studies have shown an increased risk of thyroid cancer with these drugs, but it is not known if the risk applies to humans.
