It contains a trio of medication types that decrease inflammation and relax the airways to help prevent exacerbations:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/inhaled-corticosteroids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inhaled corticosteroid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ICS), fluticasone furoate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A long-acting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/muscarinic-antagonists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">muscarinic antagonist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (LAMA), umeclidinium<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/long-acting-beta-agonists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long-acting beta2-agonist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (LABA), vilanterol<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cost of a brand-name inhaler like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/trelegy-ellipta\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trelegy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can add up over time, which is why many people prefer generic treatments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-there-a-generic-for-trelegy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is there a generic for Trelegy?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, there is no generic for Trelegy, but there are lower-cost alternatives to discuss with your healthcare provider.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI do not anticipate the ability to have a generic for Trelegy soon, given it is relatively new to market,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.memorialcare.org\/providers\/fady-youssef\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fady Youssef<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a board-certified pulmonologist, internist, and critical care specialist at MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center in Long Beach, California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Dr. Youssef says it is possible to get generic versions of Trelegy&#8217;s active ingredients, but it would require patients to use two inhalers per day. There simply is no generic inhaler containing all three of Trelegy\u2019s active ingredients.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-isn-t-there-a-trelegy-generic-yet\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why isn\u2019t there a Trelegy generic yet?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/are-generic-drugs-as-good-as-brand-name-medicines\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generic drugs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hit the market many years after their brand-name counterparts are released. That\u2019s because drug companies like GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), the manufacturer of Trelegy Ellipta, spend a lot of money to create and test the safety and effectiveness of its pharmaceutical products. Once the product is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the company maintains patent protections and exclusivity rights on the brand-name medication for several years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the case of inhalers, there are actually two patent-protected components: the inhaler device and the medication inside. GSK\u2019s patents for both Trelegy Ellipta\u2019s inhaler technology and medication are not set to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10475818\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expire until 2030<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"trelegy-alternatives\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trelegy alternatives\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though there is no generic for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=b5a81d5a-4648-4c7a-951d-33c014a63c7e\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trelegy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/trelegy-ellipta-alternatives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trelegy alternatives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> available at lower prices. However, it\u2019s important to note that no single inhaler contains the same three active ingredients as Trelegy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"a-two-inhaler-treatment-plan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A two-inhaler treatment plan<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Youssef says if he has a patient who can\u2019t access Trelegy, he considers prescribing two inhalers to cover the three classes of medications (ICS, LABA, and LAMA).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, a two-inhaler substitute for Trelegy isn\u2019t a perfect system. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUnfortunately, there are no generic LAMA inhalers,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jasonbellakmd-allergy-immunology\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jason Bellak<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, president and board-certified allergy-immunology physician at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/katzallergy.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergy &amp; Asthma Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Las Vegas, Nevada. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients will potentially still have an expensive LAMA inhaler <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the cost of the generic ICS-LABA. So, when you add it up, there may not be much savings, if at all.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Youssef also says needing to remember two dosage timings creates an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7049753\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased risk of missed doses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Other concerns to discuss with your prescriber include different common <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/trelegy-ellipta-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the potential for allergic reactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottom line: Both Drs. Bellak and Youssef occasionally prescribe two inhalers to cover Trelegy\u2019s three active ingredients, but it\u2019s not the best solution for everyone. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I do that in select patients where it makes sense financially, dependent upon their insurance,\u201d Dr. Bellak explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"generic-alternatives\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generic alternatives<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fluticasone-vilanterol, Wixela Inhub, and Breyna are generic inhalers that contain a corticosteroid and a LABA like Trelegy. However, they do not contain Trelegy\u2019s third medication type: a LAMA. Here\u2019s how they differ:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fluticasone-vilanterol:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This generic for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/breo-ellipta#coupons\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breo Ellipta<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> combines the same corticosteroid and LABA as Trelegy Ellipta (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/breo-ellipta\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fluticasone furoate and vilanterol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). It is approved for maintenance treatment of COPD and asthma, and is taken once daily.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Wixela Inhub (fluticasone propionate\/salmeterol): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like Trelegy, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/wixela-inhub\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wixela Inhub<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (brand name: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/advair-diskus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advair<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is a dry powder inhaler approved for asthma and COPD. It contains a slightly different corticosteroid (fluticasone propionate, rather than fluticasone furoate) and a different LABA than Trelegy. It is a twice-daily combination inhaler.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Breyna (budesonide\/formoterol fumarate). <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like Wixela Inhub, this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/symbicort-generic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symbicort generic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contains a different corticosteroid and LABA than Trelegy. It is also approved for asthma and COPD. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/breyna?q=Breyna\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breyna<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is taken as two inhalations twice daily compared to Trelegy Ellipta\u2019s once-daily inhalation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/umeclidinium-vilanterol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Umeclidinium-vilanterol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a generic inhaler for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/anoro-vs-trelegy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anoro Ellipta<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that contains the same anticholinergic and LABA ingredients as Trelegy Ellipta.
