However, it\u2019s important to know the difference between your heart medications and understand why your provider has prescribed you Entresto.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-entresto-a-blood-thinner\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is Entresto a blood thinner?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No, Entresto is not a blood thinner. It\u2019s approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat chronic heart failure in adults and symptomatic heart failure in children over 1 year old. It works especially well for people whose hearts don\u2019t pump enough blood on their own, a measurement known as ejection fraction (EF).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/entresto\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entresto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is part of a class of drugs called angiotensin receptor-neprilysin inhibitors (ARNIs). It\u2019s a combination medication containing sacubitril (a neprilysin inhibitor) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/valsartan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">valsartan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (an angiotensin II receptor blocker, or ARB). Blood thinners, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/anticoagulants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anticoagulants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are a separate class of drugs and include medications like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/warfarin-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warfarin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/eliquis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (apixaban), and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/xarelto\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xarelto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (rivaroxaban). According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.yale.edu\/profile\/joyce-oen-hsiao\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joyce Oen-Hsiao<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, associate professor of medicine at Yale School of Medicine:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sacubitril prevents the breakdown of natriuretic peptides, which helps relax blood vessels and promote sodium excretion.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Valsartan inhibits the effects of angiotensin II, a hormone that causes blood vessels to constrict and increases blood pressure.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Together, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a615039.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sacubitril and valsartan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> work to provide the following benefits:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relax blood vessels and increase blood flow<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Control blood volume<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduce strain on the heart<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/does-entresto-lower-blood-pressure\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lower blood pressure<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5998462\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduce the production of hormones<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that cause sodium and fluid retention<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Valsartan can also prevent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4728597\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remodeling of the heart<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (i.e., structural changes to the heart\u2019s size, shape, and functioning), which would normally lead to worsening heart function and heart failure, per Dr. Oen-Hsiao. However, nothing about Entresto\u2019s mechanism of action provides any blood-thinning or anticoagulant benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnticoagulants target different enzymes in the blood clotting cascade to thin out the blood inside the vessel,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepharmacistsguide.com\/about\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joanna Lewis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pharm.D., founder of The Pharmacist\u2019s Guide.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-do-people-think-entresto-is-a-blood-thinner\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why do people think Entresto is a blood thinner?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a few reasons why Entresto may be mistaken for a blood thinner. For starters, ARNIs and anticoagulants are both heart medications that can be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/entresto-without-insurance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expensive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and often require prior authorization for insurance coverage, Dr. Oen-Hsiao explains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are taking multiple medications to treat heart problems, it can be easy to forget why you\u2019ve been prescribed each drug or what it does for your body. This is especially true for people who are taking both Eliquis and Entresto, says Dr. Lewis: \u201cEliquis and Entresto have similar-sounding names, which can be confusing to patients since both medications are heart-related.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Lewis adds that people may also confuse or mix up these medications based on their appearance, since, depending on the dosage strength or manufacturer, some pills have similar packaging and shapes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"who-is-entresto-for\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who is Entresto for?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entresto is for people with heart failure, especially reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). It\u2019s not for people with clotting disorders or who are at risk for blood clots, because it doesn\u2019t provide any anticoagulant benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entresto isn\u2019t safe for everyone, and some people with heart failure should not take it because of an increased risk of side effects, illness, or injury. According to Dr. Oen-Hsiao, this includes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with a history of facial swelling in response to ARBs like valsartan, or angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors like Zestril (lisinopril) and Epaned (enalapril)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with severe kidney or liver disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with diabetes who also take Tekturna (aliskiren) for high blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, Dr. Oen-Hsiao notes that some people should take Entresto cautiously, including people:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a history of elevated potassium levels<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking Aldactone (spironolactone) or Inspra (eplerenone)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lithium?q=Lithium&amp;isHomeSearch=false\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lithium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking regular or high doses of NSAIDs like ibuprofen\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you can\u2019t take Entresto safely, talk to your healthcare providers about possible <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/entresto-alternatives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entresto alternatives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/carvedilol\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coreg (carvedilol)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/farxiga-uses\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Farxiga<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (dapagliflozin).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"side-effects-of-entresto\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects of Entresto\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even people who can safely take Entresto for heart failure may experience <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/entresto-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from this medication. Common side effects include low blood pressure, dizziness, diarrhea, joint and back pain, and high blood levels of potassium.
