When diarrhea does occur from Zepbound use, it tends to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10615484\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mild to moderate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in severity.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-does-zepbound-cause-diarrhea\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why does Zepbound cause diarrhea?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The link between Zepbound and GI side effects, like diarrhea, can be explained by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/zepbound-facts\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how the medication works<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK551568\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1 agonists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> function by stimulating insulin secretion, reducing blood sugar levels, and managing metabolism, which helps explain why they\u2019re used to treat Type 2 diabetes and obesity. Dual GIP\/GLP-1 agonists, such as Zepbound, may be more effective at reducing body weight than GLP-1 agonists alone, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12151102\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests. Unsurprisingly, activating receptors for them could have consequences for the gut. \u201cZepbound works by slowing stomach emptying and changing the way the gut processes food,\u201d Dr. Rao explains. \u201cFor some, as their digestive system adapts, this can lead to looser stools, more frequent bowel movements, or diarrhea.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-does-zepbound-diarrhea-last\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long does Zepbound diarrhea last?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea is one of the potential <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/is-zepbound-safe\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of Zepbound<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and a common one at that, but there\u2019s some good news: It\u2019s usually temporary and often resolves over time. Here\u2019s when it typically occurs and how long it can last.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou\u2019re most likely to experience diarrhea during the initial phase,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.revolutionmed.com\/team-member\/michael-glickman-md\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael Glickman, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an obesity medicine specialist in Washington, DC. This refers to the starter dose of Zepbound. A once-weekly injection, Zepbound is administered using single-dose pens or vials. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2025\/217806Orig1s020lbl.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">manufacturer\u2019s recommendation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is to begin at the lowest dose, 2.5 mg, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/why-increase-zepbound-dose\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase the dosage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> every four weeks until the maintenance dose is achieved. The maximum dose is 15 mg, but not everyone titrates all the way up. Your provider will help you determine the lowest dose that\u2019s effective for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, Zepbound-induced diarrhea typically lasts only a few days. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2077-0383\/12\/1\/145#:~:text=Diarrhoea%20initiates%20during%20the%20first%20four%20weeks%20of%20treatment%2C%20after%20which%20the%20incidence%20notably%20decreases%20%5B15%2C49%5D.%20Symptoms%20have%20been%20reported%20to%20last%20for%20about%20three%20days%20in%20people%20with%20obesity%20treated%20with%20GLP%2D1%20RA%20%5B18%5D.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on GLP-1 medications suggests that diarrhea is most likely to occur during the first four weeks of treatment, typically lasting for about three days and decreasing notably over time. \u201cThere\u2019s a noticeable trend of improvement over time on a maintenance dose,\u201d Dr. Glickman says. \u201cWith enough time, the gut adapts to these motility changes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there\u2019s another trend to be aware of, which is that side effects can also occur after a dose increase, Dr. Rao points out. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/39789843\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that most GI side effects from tirzepatide occur during dose escalation, though they were non-serious.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Should Zepbound cause diarrhea, it likely won\u2019t last forever. \u201cI\u2019ve seen diarrhea decrease significantly within two to four weeks and resolve completely with time,\u201d Dr. Rao says. \u201cOf course, some patients may continue to have intermittent symptoms, but they are often mild and manageable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"other-possible-zepbound-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other possible Zepbound side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though common, diarrhea isn\u2019t the only side effect of Zepbound. Implement practical lifestyle changes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tirzepatide can affect the gut, so it makes sense to adjust your diet accordingly. \u201cAvoid heavy, high-fat meals that place stress on the gut,\u201d Dr. Rao says.
