Sometimes, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insurance plans<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> only cover certain medications within a particular category, or they may not cover a specific medication if less expensive alternatives are already available.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can get <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescription drug coverage<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Part D<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in one of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicare.gov\/health-drug-plans\/part-d\/basics\/choose-coverage\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two ways<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Add on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Part D<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to your original <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare coverage<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which includes hospital coverage (Part A) and medical coverage (Part B)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choose a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Advantage<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Plan that combines parts A, B, and D into a single plan.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like other types of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insurance plans<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescription drug plans<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> each have their own lists of medications that they cover. Generally, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare plan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> drug <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">formularies<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cover a wide range of medications typically used by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> patients. The drugs are categorized into tiers, ranging from the lowest to the highest price. Extra Help was created to assist Medicare recipients with limited income in paying for their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Part D<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> premiums, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deductibles<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, coinsurance, and other costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you\u2019re on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s a great idea to check whether you qualify for the Extra Help program,\u201d Dr. Alexander says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people qualify automatically, while others who are eligible may have to apply for the coverage.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/secure.ssa.gov\/i1020\/start\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More information about Extra Help applications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is available on the U.S. Social Security Administration website.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"try-the-step-approach\"><b>Try the step approach<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Part D<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> plans require that patients try <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">step therapy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before the plan will cover a particular medication. This involves trying a less expensive drug for a particular medical condition on your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plan\u2019s formulary<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> first before the plan considers covering a more expensive medication. Some plans even require starting with a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">generic version<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of a drug, then stepping up to a less-expensive <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brand-name drug<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, before they\u2019ll agree to cover a more expensive <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brand-name drug<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat just means your provider might need to document why you need it or show that you\u2019ve tried other bladder medications first,\u201d Dr. Alexander says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"appeal-a-denial\"><b>Appeal a denial<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you receive a denial for the coverage of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gemtesa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you have the option to appeal the denial. According to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gov<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you can contact your plan to appeal for a coverage decision for a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescription drug<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. With a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicare.gov\/providers-services\/claims-appeals-complaints\/appeals\/drug-plans\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coverage Determination Request<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you can ask to get repaid for a drug that you\u2019ve already bought, or you can ask for coverage for a drug you haven\u2019t already received.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"alternative-oab-medications-covered-by-medicare\"><b>Alternative <\/b><b>OAB<\/b><b> medications covered by <\/b><b>Medicare<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gemtesa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is just one of a number of prescription <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OAB<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> treatments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAccording to the American Urological Association, the treatment of choice for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overactive bladder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OAB<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) are antimuscarinic agents, such as oxybutynin, and beta-3 agonists, such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vibegron<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d says Dr. Jonathan Newsome, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pharm.D.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, professor of clinical sciences at High Point University\u2019s Fred Wilson School of Pharmacy. \u201cThe antimuscarinic agents are older, cheaper medications compared to the beta-3 agonists.
