In fact, federal law requires the majority of health insurance plans to cover certain female-controlled birth control methods at no out-of-pocket cost.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-the-affordable-care-act-impacts-birth-control-coverage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How the Affordable Care Act impacts birth control coverage<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Birth control became more accessible and affordable for people with health insurance after the Affordable Care Act was passed in 2010.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe ACA was a major step forward for reproductive health access,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturalcycles.com\/cyclematters\/meet-dr-kerry-krauss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kerry Krauss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified OB-GYN and senior medical adviser at Natural Cycles. \u201cIt requires most health insurance plans to cover at least one version of every FDA-approved or cleared contraceptive method for women, without cost-sharing, meaning no copay or deductible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several factors determine whether insurance companies have to cover birth control under the ACA, including the following:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The birth control method is considered medically appropriate by the person\u2019s healthcare provider.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The birth control is provided by an in-network healthcare professional or pharmacy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The contraceptive is female-controlled.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emergency contraceptives must also be covered without cost-sharing when prescribed by a healthcare provider. In some states, over-the-counter emergency birth control must be covered by health insurance, too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a few major exceptions to these federal birth control laws:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Older health insurance plans don\u2019t have to follow the birth control coverage requirements if they began before the ACA passed and haven\u2019t significantly changed benefits or costs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employer-sponsored plans can be exempt from covering birth control if contraception goes against the employer\u2019s \u201csincerely held religious beliefs.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Part D plans are also not required to provide birth control, even though <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/medicare\/state-indicator\/medicare-beneficiaries-by-age\/?currentTimeframe=0&amp;sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Location%22,%22sort%22:%22asc%22%7D\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about 2%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Medicare beneficiaries (about 1.3 million people) are younger than 45.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ACA <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcare.gov\/coverage\/birth-control-benefits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doesn\u2019t require coverage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for male birth control, including vasectomies, or for abortion inducers.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ACA represents the minimum standard that states must follow, and many have additional coverage requirements. For example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/state-policy\/explore\/insurance-coverage-contraceptives\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">almost half<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of all U.S. states require insurance companies to cover an extended supply (12 months) of birth control. However, the specific method of birth control and any applicable copays vary by plan.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-blue-cross-blue-shield-cover-birth-control\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does Blue Cross Blue Shield cover birth control?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, Blue Cross Blue Shield covers birth control according to federal and state laws.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBecause BCBS operates through regional affiliates, the details can differ by state and BCBS plan,\u201d Dr. Krauss says. \u201cMost plans cover a broad range of hormonal and non-hormonal methods, and both short-acting and long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In keeping with federal law, BCBS plans aren\u2019t required to cover birth control in certain circumstances. That said, some plans do cover birth control even if they\u2019re technically not required to do so. For example, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee lists more than 100 covered contraceptives on its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcbst-medicare.com\/docs\/2026_blueadvantage_formulary.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2026 Medicare formulary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-much-does-birth-control-cost-with-bcbs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much does birth control cost with BCBS?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prescription birth control typically costs $0 with plans from Blue Cross Blue Shield and other insurance companies, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-a-formulary\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">formularies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> vary, and some may choose to cover some drugs over others. Some are in alphabetical order, in which case you\u2019d need to search for the specific birth control you\u2019re interested in. Other plans group medications by drug class or purpose. Birth control is typically listed under \u201cContraceptives\u201d or \u201cEndocrine Agents.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For additional help verifying birth control coverage and out-of-pocket expenses, call the BCBS customer service department. There are multiple independent licensees of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association around the country, and each one has a different phone number. It\u2019s usually listed on the back of the insurance card.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A pharmacist can also check whether your BCBS plan covers the birth control you\u2019ve been prescribed.
