Advancements in diabetes technologies, such as continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), have enabled people with diabetes to better manage their condition and minimize adverse effects. However, insurance coverage for CGM can vary widely, so it\u2019s important for people who want to use this type of technology to be prepared. Here\u2019s what you need to know if you plan to use the Dexcom G7, one of the newer and more popular CGM systems on the market.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Dexcom G7: What\u2019s included and how it works<\/span><\/h2>\n

In recent years, continuous glucose monitors, which are devices that employ a sensor to measure a person\u2019s blood glucose levels so they can track their blood sugar levels in real time, have become increasingly common. In fact, a <\/span>2025 report<\/span><\/a> from the American Diabetes Association (ADA) has logged a steady increase in the use of CGM among Medicare and Medicaid recipients since 2017, and even more people with Type 2 diabetes are using CGM than people with Type 1 diabetes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the ADA\u2019s \u201c<\/span>Standards of Care in Diabetes<\/span><\/a>,\u201d which includes the ADA\u2019s current clinical practice recommendations, all people with diabetes should now be offered diabetes devices. Additionally, the standards <\/span>recommend<\/span><\/a> that the \u201cinitiation of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) should be offered to people with Type 1 diabetes early in the disease, even at the time of diagnosis.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As George Huntley, CEO of the Diabetes Patient Advocacy Coalition (DPAC), puts it, \u201cIf you have diabetes and you are on insulin, you need a CGM. It\u2019s not a \u2018nice to have\u2019 in 2025. It\u2019s a \u2018need to have.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Dexcom is one of the leading manufacturers of CGM systems, and the Dexcom G7 Continuous Glucose Monitoring System is the latest CGM system manufactured by Dexcom. Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2022, the Dexcom G7 can be used by patients of any age with any type of diabetes, as long as they are at least two years old. It can even be used by pregnant people. Dexcom also manufactures the <\/span>G6<\/span><\/a> CGM, which will eventually be phased out, and the <\/span>Stelo<\/span><\/a> CGM.<\/span><\/p>\n
