Maintain a healthy diet<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating a balanced diet is one of the best ways to avoid weight gain, regardless of which medications you take. Drink plenty of water<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drinking water is another way to avoid constipation and temporary weight gain while on Myrbetriq. Staying hydrated while taking the medication may also reduce the risk of other known side effects, such as dizziness and headaches.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDrinking water throughout the day supports digestion, and it can help you feel satisfied between meals,\u201d says Kitchens. \u201cFiber absorbs water and expands in the stomach, so if you\u2019re eating high fiber foods and drinking water, this can increase the feeling of fullness and help you feel satisfied with less food.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People assigned male at birth should drink about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/nutrition-and-healthy-eating\/in-depth\/water\/art-20044256#:~:text=The%20U.S.%20National%20Academies%20of,fluids%20a%20day%20for%20women\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15.5 cups of water a day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and those assigned female at birth should drink 11.5 cups a day to help with hydration and gastrointestinal motility.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-avoid-foods-that-irritate-the-bladder\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Avoid foods that irritate the bladder<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myrbetriq itself does not have any drug-food interactions, but there are certain products, such as caffeine, alcohol, and spicy foods, that might irritate the bladder or increase the need to urinate, Dr. Erika Gray explains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI typically counsel patients if they still feel their bladder is overactive despite taking Myrbetriq to take a look at how much caffeine they are consuming.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-limit-or-avoid-alcohol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Limit or avoid alcohol<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two reasons to limit alcohol intake while on Myrbetriq. First, if you drink alcohol, it could lead to even more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/frequent-urination-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">frequent urination<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and incontinence because alcohol is a diuretic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, alcohol is an \u201cempty calorie\u201d drink, which means it adds to your overall calories without adding significantly to the nutrients your body needs. This is significant because one of Myrbetriq\u2019s side effects is an increase in blood pressure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An important note: Exercise does temporarily raise your blood pressure, but only during exercise. If you already have high blood pressure or hypertension, consult with your provider about what type of exercise may be safest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe blood pressure increases with Myrbetriq tends to be small,\u201d Dr. Erika Gray adds. \u201cHowever, if someone is struggling with controlling their blood pressure, and it tends to be elevated, then I suggest paying close attention to blood pressure levels when starting Myrbetriq.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"myrbetriq-side-effects-and-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myrbetriq side effects and interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myrbetriq may not be right for you for a few reasons.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, Myrbetriq has a few common side effects, including dry mouth, fast heart rate, a weak urine stream, headaches, urinary retention, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/uti-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urinary tract infections (UTIs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Although not as common, serious side effects of Myrbetriq include severe allergic reactions, trouble breathing, angioedema, and high blood pressure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a medical condition such as kidney or liver problems, Myrbetriq could build up in your body, increasing its side effects. If you have bladder outlet obstruction, Myrbetriq may not be your best bet due to a risk of urinary retention. The drug may not worsen the blockage, and it can still treat the symptoms of an overactive bladder, but it should be used with caution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastly, Myrbetriq has a few drug-drug interactions that could increase side effects or lead to serious conditions. Those include colchicine, thioridazine, digoxin, metoprolol, and propafenone. Ask your provider or pharmacist for medical advice if you are on any other medications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"alternatives-to-myrbetriq\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alternatives to Myrbetriq<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several alternatives to taking brand-name Myrbetriq granules or extended-release tablets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"beta-3-adrenergic-agonists-alternatives\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beta-3 adrenergic agonists alternatives<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/gemtesa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gemtesa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (vibegron) is widely accepted as the most tolerated OAB medication with mild side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn the class of beta-3 adrenergic agonists, Gemtesa is generally considered to have a slightly better side effect profile than Myrbetriq because it has fewer drug-drug interactions, and it does not increase blood pressure,\u201d Dr. Erika Gray says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like most beta-3 adrenergic agonists, Gemtesa is not linked to weight gain.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anticholinergic-agents\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anticholinergic agents<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anticholinergic agents are another class of drugs commonly used to treat OAB. They block <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter, from binding to receptors in the bladder. This reduces involuntary contractions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ditropan (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/oxybutynin-chloride-er?q=Oxybutynin%20Chloride%20Er&amp;isHomeSearch=false\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oxybutynin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vesicare\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vesicare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">solifenacin),<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/detrol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Detrol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (tolterodine) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are popular anticholinergic agents<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
