However, they\u2019re also at an increased risk of autoimmune diseases. Women make up <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7292717\/#:~:text=Approximately%C2%A080%25%C2%A0of%20all%20patients%20diagnosed%20with%20autoimmune%20diseases%20are%20women%20%5B1%5D.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">approximately 80%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of people diagnosed with these conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin E hasn\u2019t been shown to offset autoimmunity, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25244230\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">researchers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have dubbed it one of the best studied candidates for delaying or reversing age-related changes to immune function. May improve heart health<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers have long explored the possible connection between vitamin E intake and heart disease risk, but the studies have been largely inconclusive. However, recent research is promising.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2772487524001053\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2025 cohort study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> involving more than 39,000 participants and 15 years of data examined dietary vitamin E and cardiovascular disease outcomes. Researchers found that higher dietary intake of vitamin E was associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease as well as all-cause mortality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While heart disease affects both women and men, it\u2019s worth acknowledging the gender disparities. Heart disease is considered the leading cause of death in both sexes, but there are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11148660\/#:~:text=Besides%20the%20traditional,exponentially%20in%20women.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gender-specific risk factors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in women, such as menopause and pregnancy. \u201cBecause women are at higher risk for cardiovascular disease after menopause, having enough vitamin E is important to counter this risk by supporting vascular health,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drwilliamli.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">William Li, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, physician scientist and author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eat To Beat Disease<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-supports-healthy-reproduction-and-pregnancy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Supports healthy reproduction and pregnancy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWomen should make sure they get enough vitamin E from their diet because this vitamin helps reproductive function during their younger years,\u201d Dr. Li says. He specifically calls out ovarian and uterine health. In women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), vitamin E <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-022-24467-0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has been shown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to improve lipid profiles and lower inflammation. When combined with vitamin C, it\u2019s also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8172324\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">been shown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to reduce menstrual cramps, pelvic pain, and painful intercourse in women with endometriosis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin E is also important during pregnancy, Finke says. \u201cPregnancy is a state of increased metabolic activity, which typically increases oxidative stress,\u201d she explains. \u201cVitamin E can help to counteract this oxidative load by protecting cells and supporting normal immune and inflammatory responses.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers have long debated whether vitamin E reduces the risk of pre-eclampsia in women. There\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9253635\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some evidence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that low levels of vitamin E in pregnant women increase pre-eclampsia risk, but more research may be needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-could-protect-against-osteoporosis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Could protect against osteoporosis<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aging is a natural part of life, but it can come with some challenges, such as bone loss. Women are at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK607719\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased risk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of osteoporosis, Alzheimer\u2019s disease, and other chronic conditions. Vitamin E may help lower some of the risk. \u201cIt protects against bone loss as women age,\u201d Dr. Li says, adding that it also helps maintain muscle mass, which can strengthen bones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11532079\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a cross-sectional study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 5,800 older adults, high vitamin E intake was significantly associated with a reduced risk of osteoporosis. As for women specifically, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8709036\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a randomized controlled trial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that vitamin E supplementation may prevent bone loss in postmenopausal women with low bone density.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-may-reduce-the-risk-of-dementia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Vitamins E and K can also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-vitamins-should-not-be-taken-together\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interact with each other<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can increase bleeding risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"8-supports-healthy-skin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. For example, vitamin E is known to aid in wound healing and protect the skin from ultraviolet-induced free radicals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What about oral vitamin E for skin health? <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8670689\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One meta-analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found an association between low levels of vitamin E and inflammatory skin diseases, such as vitiligo, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and acne. This suggests that adequate vitamin E intake may help reduce the risk and severity of certain skin conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"natural-vs-synthetic-vitamin-e\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural vs. synthetic vitamin E<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should aim to get enough vitamin E, but should you prioritize natural or synthetic sources of this vitamin? Here\u2019s the difference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several forms of vitamin E, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/alpha-tocopherol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alpha-tocopherol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is considered the primary form for human absorption.
