Yes. The generic name for <\/span>Tamiflu<\/span> is<\/span> oseltamivir<\/span><\/a>, and the <\/span>FDA approved<\/span> generic versions<\/span> of the drug in 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n

Many individuals, <\/span>healthcare providers<\/span>, and insurance companies prefer generic options because they\u2019re usually much cheaper than their <\/span>brand-name<\/span> brethren. What does \u201cgeneric\u201d really mean for medications?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Many people think that cheaper prices reflect lower-quality products. And while this might be true for some clothing, furniture, and appliances, it\u2019s not true for medications. In fact, the <\/span>FDA<\/span> requires that generic drugs have the same active ingredient, strengths, <\/span>dosage forms<\/span>, and routes of administration as their reference products.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you take generic <\/span>oseltamivir<\/span>, you\u2019ll be getting a bioequivalent and pharmaceutically equivalent medication as <\/span>brand-name<\/span> Tamiflu<\/span>. However, bioequivalence simply means that the active ingredient is absorbed into the body at the same rate and amount as <\/span>Tamiflu<\/span>, and pharmaceutically equivalent means it contains the same active ingredient in the same amounts.<\/span> Therapeutic equivalence is stricter<\/span><\/a>; it means two drugs are pharmaceutically equivalent <\/span>and<\/span><\/i> have identical clinical effects and safety profiles.<\/span><\/p>\n

Generic drug manufacturers have to<\/span> get <\/span>FDA<\/span> sign-off on several things<\/span><\/a>. They must prove that:<\/span><\/p>\n

  6. The generic\u2019s inactive ingredients are safe.<\/span><\/li>\n
  7. The generic won’t break down over time.<\/span><\/li>\n
  8. The generic has appropriate packaging for shipping and sales.<\/span><\/li>\n
  9. The label is the same as the brand\u2019s.<\/span><\/li>\n
  10. The brand\u2019s relevant patents have expired before the generic is marketed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    It\u2019s a rigorous process, but it ensures the generic drug is extremely similar to the <\/span>brand-name<\/span> product. This way, they\u2019ll be safe and effective for many patients. Even so, it\u2019s up to <\/span>healthcare providers<\/span> and pharmacists to determine whether a certain generic will work for their patient\u2019s specific situation.<\/span><\/p>\n

    What is the active ingredient in <\/span>Tamiflu<\/span>?<\/span><\/h2>\n

    Tamiflu<\/span>\u2019s active ingredient is called <\/span>oseltamivir phosphate<\/span>, and it works by blocking an enzyme called neuraminidase on the surface of <\/span>influenza viruses<\/span>. By blocking this enzyme, <\/span>oseltamivir phosphate<\/span> effectively stops the virus from spreading.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
