How long does tadalafil last?<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u201cI tell my patients tadalafil is often called the \u2018weekend pill’ because it can remain effective for up to 36 hours,\u201d says <\/span>Jason Carter, MD<\/span><\/a>, a urologist and medical adviser at Aeroflow Urology. \u201cThat doesn\u2019t mean you have a constant erection. It means the medication stays active in your system and can support better erections during that window.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

However, patients who want to get the maximum effect for ED may want to plan to enjoy the benefits earlier, rather than later. \u201cThe first 12 hours are probably your best bet,\u201d explains <\/span>Evan Goldfischer<\/span><\/a>, MD, a urologist and past president of the Large Urology Group Practice Association (LUGPA).<\/span><\/p>\n

Tadalafil<\/span><\/a> belongs to a class of medications called <\/span>phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) inhibitors<\/span><\/a> that block the action of a specific enzyme in the lungs and penis to improve blood flow. When combined with sexual stimulation, this helps facilitate an erection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tadalafil has a half-life of 17.5 hours, which is longer than most other PDE5 inhibitors (such as avanafil or vardenafil) and makes it better suited to daily use, according to <\/span>research<\/span><\/a>. \u201cThe duration of tadalafil can vary based on factors like dosing strategy, individual metabolism, baseline vascular health, renal function, heavy alcohol use, and psychological factors like anxiety, performance pressure, and relationship stress,\u201d notes Dr. Carter.<\/span><\/p>\n

How long does tadalafil take to work?<\/span><\/h2>\n

For ED, \u201cit can take about 15 to 20 minutes,\u201d says <\/span>Steven Morganstern<\/span><\/a>, MD, a urologist, surgeon, and founder of <\/span>Rejuvall Health Centers<\/span><\/a> in Atlanta, Georgia. However, you can\u2019t just take a tablet and expect magic results.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNow remember, it doesn\u2019t create the erection,\u201d Dr. Morganstern says. \u201cYou still have to have stimulation there and the correct levels of amino acids and hormones. For example, if you have low testosterone, the medication will be ineffective and will not help.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For relief of BPH or PAH, the medication must reach a therapeutic level for maximum benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n
