You might think that taking vitamins will boost your overall health, but certain supplements could actually make your symptoms even worse.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are four vitamins you should take with caution if you have diverticulitis, and a handful of tips you can implement to mitigate the risk of a flare-up.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-certain-vitamins-can-worsen-diverticulitis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How certain vitamins can worsen diverticulitis<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can\u2019t talk about diverticulitis without talking about the colon. A healthy colon wall is smooth. Occasionally, the colon develops a small, irregular pouch that bulges. This pouch is called a diverticulum (multiple pouches are diverticula). The bowel wall can have weak spots in the wall of the large intestine. Risk factors for developing diverticuli are chronic constipation and increasing age. Chronic constipation stresses those weak spots and causes outpouching of the bowel and bulges.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people are asymptomatic and have these pouches without issues (a condition known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/diverticulosis-vs-diverticulitis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diverticulosis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or diverticular disease), and they only know of their condition after they have a colonic imaging study with dye or after a colonoscopy. In fact, roughly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/24883-diverticulosis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30% of people older than 50<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have it. However, when the diverticula become inflamed, diverticulitis develops. This can lead to nausea, fevers, bloating, severe abdominal pain, constipation, and diarrhea. Some people experience acute bouts of diverticulitis, while others have it chronically.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamins may not necessarily worsen diverticulitis, but rather, they can lead to additional gastrointestinal issues, and nobody wants to deal with that. Certain vitamins and supplements are linked to GI disturbances, and they can adversely affect you in the following ways:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Affecting your microbiome: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain vitamins are great for your microbiome, but if taken in excess, they can shift the balance of good versus bad bacteria in your gut.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Increased inflammation:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Some supplements, such as iron, may increase inflammation in your GI tract and cause digestive issues.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Changes in bowel movements: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some vitamins are linked to poor bowel motility, and constipation can cause stool to get stuck in the outpouchings called diverticula, leading to increased pain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Changes in pH: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High dosages of certain vitamins can lead to an alteration in your gut\u2019s pH balance, resulting in more inflammation and can even result in infection.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are prone to diverticulitis, then you already have a sensitive gut. Being mindful of what you put in your body\u2014or how much of something you put in your body\u2014can prevent you from experiencing additional adverse symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"vitamins-to-approach-with-caution-if-you-have-diverticulitis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamins to approach with caution if you have diverticulitis<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAt this point, no vitamin has been documented in clinical trials to directly worsen diverticulitis,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mytoolboxgenomics.com\/about-us\/erika-gray\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Erika Gray, Pharm.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, founder and chief medical officer at ToolBox Genomics.com.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oddly enough, the very vitamins that can be beneficial for you can also be very harmful for you when taken at high dosages. The following supplements should be used with caution before, during, and after <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-does-a-diverticulitis-attack-feel-like\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diverticulitis attacks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-iron-supplements\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Iron supplements<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking an iron supplement, specifically ferrous sulfate, puts you at a significantly higher risk of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0117383\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">having GI issues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including constipation. When you\u2019re constipated, your bowel movements could become stuck in the diverticula, and some experts believe that this issue could lead to the inflammation and infection that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/diverticular-disease\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">causes diverticulitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you experience diverticulitis and need an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ferrous-sulfate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">iron supplement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well, consult with your healthcare provider about the appropriate dosage. However, you can take too much of a good thing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTaking high doses of vitamin C can cause stomach discomfort or loose stools,\u201d warns <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/plantcenterednutrition.us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ashley Kitchens, RDN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, registered dietitian and owner of Plant Centered Nutrition in Durham, North Carolina. If your body can\u2019t absorb all of the vitamin C you take, your intestines pull in more water. In turn, this exacerbates symptoms like diarrhea for those with diverticulitis. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/VitaminC-HealthProfessional\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommended daily dose of vitamin C<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for adults is 90 to 120 milligrams (mg), with excess amounts ranging from 400 to 2,000 mg.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-fat-soluble-vitamins-a-d-e-and-k\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proceed with caution here. Vitamins A, D, E, and K are known as the \u201cfat-soluble\u201d vitamins, which means they need dietary fats in order for your body to absorb them. Unlike water-soluble vitamins, which your body eventually excretes in urine, fat-soluble vitamins can accumulate, potentially leading to toxicity. They can be especially problematic for people with diverticulitis because of the vitamins\u2019 effects on the GI system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTaking high doses of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K can upset your gut microbiome,\u201d says Kitchens. \u201cVery high doses of vitamin A have been shown to increase inflammation. Because vitamin D increases calcium absorption, taking very high doses can contribute to constipation in some people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mayo Clinic recommends the following doses:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6 to 15 mg of vitamin A<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">600 IU of vitamin D\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8 to 10 mg of vitamin E<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">90 to 120 mcg of vitamin K (this is the recommended daily intake, which most people get from their diets)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"4-magnesium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Magnesium<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Magnesium is fantastic for sleep, your immune system, and\u2014lo and behold\u2014your gut! Some experts even recommend <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wjgnet.com\/1007-9327\/full\/v27\/i9\/760.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low doses of magnesium citrate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a laxative for those with diverticulitis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where things get dicey is with how much and which type of magnesium you take. For example, too much magnesium citrate could cause diarrhea, worsening your symptoms. Magnesium glycinate may be the better option because it has milder effects on the colon. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mcpress.mayoclinic.org\/nutrition-fitness\/magnesium-glycinate-is-this-supplement-helpful-for-you\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommended dosage of magnesium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> glycinate is between 400 to 420 milligrams for adults assigned male at birth, and 310 to 320 milligrams for adults assigned female at birth.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"vitamins-that-may-actually-help\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamins that may actually help<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re looking for natural supplementation to help ease diverticulitis, there are several vitamins and minerals that may be beneficial for digestive health. Yes, these are the same vitamins that appear on our \u201cproceed with caution\u201d list, so make sure you\u2019re paying attention to recommended dosages and getting medical advice from your healthcare provider.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"vitamin-d\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin D<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, this is also on our \u201cvitamins to use with caution\u201d list.
