(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medication-for-fatty-liver\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MASLD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the new name for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, or NAFLD.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies suggest that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5789322\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oxidative stress is a major cause of NAFLD-associated liver injury<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and that vitamin E may protect against that specific type of oxidative stress. One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-024-52482-w\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that a higher intake of vitamin E was associated with a lower risk of NAFLD, results confirmed by a liver ultrasound test called elastography, which assesses the health of liver tissue. The evidence is strong enough that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/ajg\/fulltext\/2025\/05000\/acg_clinical_guideline__malnutrition_and.13.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American College of Gastroenterology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends vitamin E for the management of certain liver conditions for specific patient populations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-prevention-of-certain-eye-disorders\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Prevention of certain eye disorders<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the U.S., about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/preventblindness.org\/amd-prevalence-vehss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 in every 100 people older than 50<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has an advanced stage of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) that could ultimately cause vision loss; that number jumps to 1 in every 10 for people older than 80.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC2881167\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin E alone hasn\u2019t been proven to prevent the onset of AMD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there is more evidence supporting the use of a combination of vitamins and nutrients called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aao.org\/eye-health\/diseases\/vitamins-amd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AREDS 2 vitamins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (based on the Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2, which researched their effectiveness). According to the AREDS 2 study, people with early to intermediate AMD who took 400 IUs of vitamin E in combination with specific amounts of vitamin C, zinc, copper, and other nutrients had a better chance of avoiding progression to advanced AMD.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-stronger-immune-system\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Stronger immune system\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because vitamin E can prevent damage caused by oxidative stress, it holds a lot of power for your immune system. Manaker says not only does vitamin E help protect immune cells from free-radical damage, but it also supports the production of T-cells, which are essential for fighting infections.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7011499\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests these effects could be more evident in older adults, reducing the incidence of infections like pneumonia and the flu as well as chronic illnesses like asthma. Meanwhile, another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/newsroom\/study-finds-vitamin-e-can-boost-immunotherapy-responses.h00-159538956.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that vitamin E supplements may have enhanced the effectiveness of immunotherapy treatments for people with melanoma, thereby improving survival rates.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"different-forms-of-vitamin-e\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Different forms of vitamin E<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember how we said vitamin E is not a single vitamin, but a category of eight different compounds? It can get confusing, but before you choose a vitamin E supplement, it\u2019s important to understand the differences between the forms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are 2 categories of vitamin E molecules: tocopherols and tocotrienols. At the cellular level, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lpi.oregonstate.edu\/mic\/vitamins\/vitamin-E\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tocopherols and tocotrienols have different chemical structures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but we won\u2019t dig into that here since it\u2019s not relevant for most consumers. From there, tocopherols break down into 4 subgroups: alpha, beta, gamma, and delta; tocotrienols are differentiated by changes in location of certain organic compound groups on a shared common ring structure Again, there\u2019s a lot of molecular biology happening here that you don\u2019t need to know, but basically, the individual subgroups have different numbers of chemical groups that set them apart from one another.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your takeaway? All these molecular differences between various forms of vitamin E influence how your body utilizes it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common form of vitamin E found in supplements is alpha-tocopherol. It\u2019s the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11968272\/#:~:text=The%20term%20vitamin%20E%20refers,repeatedly%20discussed%20in%20the%20literature.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most bioavailable<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which means your body absorbs and uses more of it compared to all the various forms of vitamin E. Finally, alpha-tocopherol is split into two categories: d-alpha-tocopherol (the natural form) and dl-alpha-tocopherol (the synthetic form). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is available as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">international units<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or IUs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"dietary-sources-of-vitamin-e\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dietary sources of vitamin E<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on your diet, you may be getting plenty of vitamin E through the foods you eat every day. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/VitaminE-HealthProfessional\/#h4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin E is found in many plant-based foods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Good sources of vitamin E include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sunflower seeds<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vegetable oil<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wheat germ<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almonds, hazelnuts, and peanuts (and nut butters)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spinach<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Broccoli<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mangoes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tomatoes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avocadoes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green leafy vegetables<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortified breakfast cereals<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"recommended-daily-intake-and-optimal-dosing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recommended daily intake and optimal dosing<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Manaker, the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for vitamin E is 15 milligrams (22.4 IU) per day for adults. If you\u2019re supplementing, you can technically go up to 1,000 mg (1,500 IU) per day, she adds, but that\u2019s the upper limit. It\u2019s not generally recommended to take that much unless a provider is supervising your supplementation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s actually pretty <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionsource.hsph.harvard.edu\/vitamin-e\/#cognitive-function-and-neurodegenerative-diseases\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uncommon to have a vitamin E deficiency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the U.S., but if you think you\u2019re not getting enough or may be deficient, talk with your provider. They may recommend that you get blood drawn for a vitamin and nutrient panel to identify any dietary gaps, which can help them tell you exactly how much vitamin E you should supplement with.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"are-supplements-necessary\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are supplements necessary?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Jennings says dietary sources are preferred for vitamin E, but supplementation may be necessary for some people. Because it is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/002399.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a fat-soluble vitamin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that\u2019s stored in your body\u2019s fatty tissues (and is absorbed better when you consume enough dietary fat), it can be hard for certain people to get the right amount of vitamin E.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMost people can get enough vitamin E from a balanced diet that includes nuts, seeds, vegetable oils, and leafy greens,\u201d says Manaker, \u201chowever, people with fat malabsorption issues, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/crohns-disease-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crohn\u2019s disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, cystic fibrosis, or chronic pancreatitis, [may need to consider supplementation].\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, if your diet is extremely low in fat, you might not get enough vitamin E without a supplement since it\u2019s found in so many foods that contain fat, Manaker adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re shopping for a supplement, look for one containing d-alpha-tocopherol, the natural form. This one is better absorbed and utilized by the body than the synthetic form, says Manaker, so it\u2019s the best option for supplementation.
