They both contribute to increased urine output.\u201d So, taking them together may increase the risk of changes in blood sugar, low blood pressure, or dehydration. These are the three biggest ways that mixing caffeine and Farxiga may contribute to negative side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-blood-sugar-fluctuations\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Blood sugar fluctuations<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFarxiga [a sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor] already works to decrease blood glucose on its own by pushing excess glucose out of the body through the urinary tract,\u201d explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/carrie-kreps-5ab26b224\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carrie Kreps, Pharm.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the director of clinical services at Pharmacy Care Associates, an independent specialty retail pharmacy in Montgomery, Alabama. She says that strictly mixing caffeine with Farxiga does not have a direct impact on blood sugar for everyone, but it could cause fluctuations depending on a few factors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn someone with diabetes who is taking insulin, caffeine can potentially increase <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-for-insulin-resistance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insulin resistance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or impair the way that the body responds to insulin, creating an opposite effect than desired by Farxiga use,\u201d Dr. Wall says. \u201cAt the same time, caffeine may enhance the ability of Farxiga to remove glucose from the body via the urine as it has a similar effect on the body, and this would contribute to lower blood sugar levels.\u201d In other words, if you\u2019re taking Farxiga for Type 2 diabetes and struggling to get your blood sugar under control, combining it with caffeine could make that a little more difficult.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Kreps adds that if you typically get your caffeine from a sugary coffee or energy drink, the added carbohydrates in your drink could affect your blood sugar.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-blood-pressure-tug-of-war\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Blood pressure tug-of-war<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s reasonable to expect blood pressure to slightly drop when taking Farxiga alone because of how it works [by increasing urine output],\u201d Dr. Kreps says. But when you drink coffee, you may experience some fluctuations. \u201cAdding caffeine consumption while taking Farxiga may offset the decrease in blood pressure initially, because caffeine can initially increase blood pressure,\u201d Dr. Kreps explains. \u201cAnd then after, it causes mild diuresis, which could possibly decrease blood pressure in sensitive demographics.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-hydration-changes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Hydration changes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since Farxiga and caffeine both increase how much you go to the bathroom, they can increase the likelihood of dehydration. But as long as you\u2019re taking steps to drink enough water, it shouldn\u2019t be an issue. \u201cMixing Farxiga and caffeine may cause dehydration, but caffeine doesn&#8217;t necessarily need to be avoided if a patient maintains adequate fluid intake,\u201d Dr. Wall says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-the-research-says\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What the research says<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are not many scientific studies examining the effects of combining Farxiga and caffeine, but the few that exist have reached the same conclusions. When treatment with Farxiga is started, it can cause a slight worsening in kidney function. Even so, for the long term, Farxiga helps slow the decline in kidney function after what is called the initial \u201cdip\u201d. Two studies from Saint Louis University, one published in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/jasn\/fulltext\/2023\/11001\/caffeine_effects_on_egfr_dip_in_patients_who.1358.aspx\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of the American Society of Nephrology<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the other published in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12559023\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physiological Reports<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed that caffeine in large quantities may help offset the \u201cdip\u201d in kidney function that is seen when patients are started on Farxiga.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, these were both retrospective survey-style studies that relied on people self-reporting their caffeine intake, both of which are limitations that would need to be addressed in future research into how caffeine may impact the effects of Farxiga on kidney function.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\t\t<div class=\"singlecare-dynamic-newsletter-wrapper sin-newsletter-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"heading\">Get our diabetes newsletter<\/span>\n\t\t\t<form class=\"form-wrapper\" data-newsletter-form=\"1\" data-subsource=\"Diabetes Newsletter\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"input-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<label for=\"dynamic-email\">Email<\/label>\n\t\t\t\t\t<input type=\"email\" id=\"dynamic-email\" class=\"email\" required>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"input-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<input class=\"submit-form-btn\" type=\"submit\" value=\"Click to sign up\">\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/form>\n\t\t\t<p class=\"success-message\" aria-live=\"polite\"><\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"when-to-be-extra-cautious\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to be extra cautious<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor a patient taking Farxiga, consuming caffeine in moderation is generally safe,\u201d Dr. Wall says. However, there are a few groups of people who should be extra cautious. They include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with existing kidney problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with chronic low blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Older adults<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThese groups may benefit from consuming caffeine in stricter moderation since if they do experience dehydration or low blood pressure, it could worsen injury to the kidney,\u201d Dr. Wall explains. Before you take Farxiga, always share any preexisting health conditions and a list of all over-the-counter supplements and medications you are taking with your provider. Farxiga has drug interactions with several medications, such as lithium, diuretics, blood pressure medications, certain diabetes medications like insulin, and sulfonylureas such as glimepiride.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"practical-advice-for-caffeine-consumers-on-farxiga\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Practical advice for caffeine consumers on Farxiga<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whenever you\u2019re starting a new medication, it\u2019s important to seek medical advice from a healthcare professional to determine if you need to make any changes to your typical habits. As for caffeine and Farxiga, Dr. Wall and Dr. Kreps say that staying well-hydrated is the most important factor in avoiding potential side effects. You can do so by following these tips:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-much-water-drink-day\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drink plenty of water<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> throughout the day.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Focus on drinking more caffeine-free beverages than caffeinated beverages ones\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eat hydrating fruits and vegetables, such as cucumbers, tomatoes, and melons.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid drinking alcohol, which can also contribute to dehydration.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be mindful of other ways our bodies lose hydration, such as perspiration. Be especially careful of your hydration status while exercising or being active outdoors,\u201d says Dr. Kreps.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re unsure if you\u2019re dehydrated, try this simple test. \u201cYour own hydration status can be a little bit hard to gauge, but I often encourage people to pay attention to how they feel if they stand up quickly from a seated position. If they become lightheaded, they likely need to hydrate,\u201d Dr. Kreps says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-bottom-line\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Farxiga and caffeine don\u2019t directly interact, but they can have overlapping effects on the body. Because both increase urine output, pairing them may raise the risk of dehydration and contribute to swings in blood sugar or blood pressure, particularly for people taking Farxiga to manage those conditions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this reason, \u201cit would be wise to keep caffeine consumption to a reasonable amount while taking Farxiga,\u201d Dr. Kreps says.
