The leaves of the plant have been used across the world to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8878098\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treat headaches<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when steeped in tea. This is due to the plant\u2019s known ability to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4259190\/#s020\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce inflammation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A word of caution, though, is that there aren\u2019t any studies to support soursop\u2019s direct effect on headaches, and current evidence appears to be anecdotal.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"9-may-lower-blood-sugar-levels\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9. In one study, researchers pretreated rats with soursop fruit extract and then injected them with carrageenan to elicit edema (swelling). Shows potential anti-cancer activity<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An extensive scientific review notes that graviola (another name for soursop) is a popular treatment for cancer in some countries. Extracts from the plant were found to offer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/carcin\/article\/39\/4\/522\/4859483\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">protection against malignancies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including colon, breast, and prostate cancers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This isn\u2019t to suggest that you should avoid medicine and turn to soursop. As a result of reduced body weight and body fat, soursop tea was also potentially linked to a reduction in cardiovascular risks associated with cholesterol and triglycerides.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"important-considerations-and-potential-downsides\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Important considerations and potential downsides<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a number of claims about soursop\u2019s health benefits, such as improving sleep, but we couldn\u2019t find any science-backed evidence. Additionally, while soursop has potential effects on inflammation, blood pressure, and even cancer cells, the plant has not been recommended by health professionals as a \u201cmiracle cure\u201d for any of these or the other issues outlined here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soursop can be a beneficial addition to your diet, though it may not be safe for everyone. There are several groups of people who should avoid the fruit or consume it with caution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe main group at risk is those with neurodegenerative diseases,\u201d says Dr. Gray. \u201cPeople with a family history of neurodegenerative disorders should avoid eating soursop.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soursop contains annonacin, which is a mitochondrial toxin, she explains. Chronic consumption has been linked to neurodegenerative illnesses like Parkinson&#8217;s disease. She notes that a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> typical serving size is 1 cup of chopped, fresh fruit to get the health benefits.
