Two veterinarians explain everything you need to know about antihistamines for cats, in what circumstances you would give a cat an antihistamine, and how to ensure the antihistamine is given safely and comfortably for your furry sweetheart.<\/span><\/p>\n

Can your cat take antihistamines?<\/span><\/h2>\n

What should you do if your cat has signs of an <\/span>allergic reaction<\/span><\/a>, such as itching, inflamed skin, sneezing, wheezing, a runny nose, or vomiting\/diarrhea? Can you give a cat an allergy medicine like an antihistamine?<\/span><\/p>\n

The answer is yes, cats can generally take antihistamines for allergy relief, according to Hilary Humm-Beatty, DVM, veterinary consultant at<\/span> Embrace Pet Insurance<\/span><\/a>. \u201cAs with any medication, the choice of medication and dosage should be determined in consultation with your cat\u2019s veterinarian,\u201d Dr. Humm-Beatty advises.<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether or not a cat can take an antihistamine \u201cabsolutely depends on the individual cat’s health status,\u201d says Sabrina Kong, DVM. veterinarian at<\/span> WeLoveDoodles<\/span><\/a>. Factors that your feline\u2019s vet might consider include age, any pre-existing conditions (especially kidney or liver disease), and other medications they\u2019re currently taking.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat works for one cat may be harmful to another, which is why professional guidance is non-negotiable,\u201d Dr. Kong emphasizes.<\/span><\/p>\n

When do cats need antihistamines?<\/span><\/h2>\n

The main reason a veterinarian might suggest an antihistamine for a cat is an allergy or another inflammatory condition. Cats can experience<\/span> environmental allergens, food allergies, and allergic asthma<\/span><\/a>. During an allergic reaction, a <\/span>cat\u2019s symptoms<\/span><\/a> can include itchiness and scratching, skin inflammation, dermatitis, sneezing\/wheezing, vomiting and diarrhea, and overgrooming (licking themselves more than usual).<\/span><\/p>\n

But allergies and allergy symptoms aren\u2019t the only situations where taking an antihistamine may be helpful.<\/span><\/p>\n

The most common use of antihistamines in cats is to treat environmental or<\/span> seasonal allergies<\/span><\/a>, which typically cause skin itching or sneezing, according to Dr. Kong. \u201cThey’re also used for insect bite reactions, as part of mast cell tumor management, and occasionally for mild vaccine reactions,\u201d she explains.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Also, although some vets prescribe antihistamines for certain respiratory issues, they’re less effective for true asthma, Dr. Kong notes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Which human antihistamines are safe for cats?<\/span><\/h2>\n

When appropriate and recommended by a veterinarian, cats can take the same antihistamines that humans take. But that doesn\u2019t mean that cats should take them the same way. It\u2019s very important to follow your veterinarian\u2019s instructions as cats<\/span> need different doses of human antihistamines<\/span><\/a>. It\u2019s also important that the antihistamines don\u2019t contain any other ingredients that might be unsafe for cats.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what to know about the most commonly used antihistamines for cats.<\/span><\/p>\n

Allegra (fexofenadine)<\/span><\/h3>\n

Allegra<\/span><\/a> is a second-generation option that\u2019s often used for cats. Allegra is \u201cgood for cats with mild allergies,\u201d Dr. Kong says. It\u2019s typically dosed at 10-25 mg per cat once daily, Dr. Kong shares.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Benadryl (diphenhydramine)<\/span><\/h3>\n

Benadryl is an older, first-generation antihistamine commonly used in cats. It\u2019s often<\/span> given to cats when they have a sudden allergic reaction<\/span><\/a>, like from a bee sting. It can also treat a runny nose, sneezing, and itching.<\/span> Typical dosing<\/span> is about 1mg per pound of your cat\u2019s weight, every 8-12 hours. For example, a 12-pound cat would take about half of an adult 25 mg tablet in an 8 to 12 hour period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Chlor-Trimeton (chlorpheniramine)<\/span><\/h3>\n

Chlorpheniramine<\/span><\/a> is another first-generation antihistamine sometimes given to cats. It\u2019s usually dosed at 2-4 mg per cat twice daily, according to Dr. Kong. \u201cIt can cause drowsiness in some cats,\u201d Dr. Kong notes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Zyrtec (cetirizine)<\/span><\/h3>\n

Zyrtec<\/span><\/a> is another second-generation antihistamine that\u2019s often used for <\/span>skin allergies in cats,<\/span><\/a> according to Dr. Kong. \u201cIt causes less sedation than older drugs,\u201d Dr. Kong says, who adds that Zyrtec for cats is typically dosed at 2.5-5 mg per cat, once daily.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Antihistamines that are not safe for cats<\/span><\/h2>\n

Most antihistamines are safe for cats, though you should only give your cat an antihistamine after consulting with your cat\u2019s veterinarian. However, there are certain ingredients in medications often combined with antihistamines that you should not give to your cat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Antihistamines with decongestants<\/span><\/h3>\n

Sometimes antihistamines are found in<\/span> cold medications<\/span><\/a>, and certain active ingredients in cold medications are dangerous for cats. \u201cNever use products containing<\/span> pseudoephedrine<\/span><\/a> or<\/span> phenylephrine<\/span><\/a> (common in “cold” formulas) since these are highly toxic to cats,\u201d says Dr. Kong.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Antihistamines with acetaminophen or other pain relievers<\/span><\/h3>\n

Additionally, sometimes antihistamines are found in products that also contain pain relievers. \u201cAlways check labels for<\/span> acetaminophen<\/span><\/a> or other pain relievers, which are deadly to cats,\u201d Dr. Kong warns. It\u2019s very important not to give these to your cat.<\/span><\/p>\n

Considerations before giving your cat antihistamines\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

In addition to staying away from antihistamines that contain pseudoephedrine, phenylephrine, or pain relievers, Dr. Kong recommends avoiding long-acting\/extended-release formulations, which can be dangerous for cats. Likewise, stay in touch with your veterinarian if your cat is taking an antihistamine long-term. \u201cLong-term use of any antihistamine should be monitored by a vet to watch for potential effects,\u201d Dr. Kong says.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Humm-Beatty says that when giving your cat an antihistamine, it\u2019s important to keep in mind that results may take some time. \u201cIt may take up to 10 days for your cat to respond to antihistamines,\u201d she says. Moreover, you want to be sure that you address all causes of your cat\u2019s allergies and manage the allergen responsible for the allergic reaction in the first place.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNot all allergies will respond to antihistamines alone,\u201d Dr. Humm-Beatty says. \u201cFor example, if your cat has a flea allergy, it is essential to eradicate the fleas on the cat and in the environment. Antihistamines alone will not help with flea allergies.\u201d The same is true of<\/span> food allergies<\/span><\/a>, and she recommends working with your vet to run a food allergy trial if you think that\u2019s what\u2019s causing your cat\u2019s allergic reaction.<\/span><\/p>\n
