She says excess adipose tissue in the neck can press down on the airway during sleep, when a person is lying down and relaxed. \u201cExtra pressure on the chest is also a component,\u201d she says. \u201cJust think if you had a 50-lb weight sitting on your chest as you were trying to sleep.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research shows that tirzepatide also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/41032183\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduces systemic inflammation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dom-pubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/dom.16294\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improves insulin sensitivity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These factors don\u2019t <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">directly <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cause sleep apnea. However, insulin resistance and inflammation-driving lifestyle habits, such as smoking and alcohol consumption,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/health\/sleep-apnea\/causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are linked<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to an increased risk of developing OSA. Given that, Mounjaro may decrease the risk of developing or worsening OSA.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mounjaro-and-sleep-apnea-studies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro and sleep apnea studies\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep apnea treatment research is ongoing. In late 2024, brand-name Zepbound (not Mounjaro) became the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-approves-first-medication-obstructive-sleep-apnea\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first FDA-approved medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the treatment of moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In placebo-controlled<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa2404881\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (SURMOUNT-OSA), people with moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea on weekly doses of 10 milligrams (mg) or 15 mg experienced improvements in their apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) scores, a measure of sleep apnea severity. Specifically, patients experienced reduced:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frequency of breath-holding episodes per hour of sleep<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frequency of shallow breathing episodes per hour of sleep.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Body weight<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypoxic burden (oxygen dips)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on these results,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41591-025-04071-1#Sec6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">researchers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have concluded that a two-pronged approach of weight reduction and direct OSA treatment (such as CPAP therapy) may be the best way to improve or cure OSA.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-mounjaro-approved-for-sleep-apnea\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is Mounjaro approved for sleep apnea?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of March 2026, name-brand Mounjaro is not FDA-approved for the treatment of sleep apnea. That&#8217;s why healthcare providers are more likely to prescribe name-brand Zepbound for sleep apnea (even though both of these medications are tirzepatide).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Ott is unsure why tirzepatide, sold as Zepbound, is FDA approved for OSA, but tirzepatide, sold as Mounjaro, is not. However, she notes that since the two medications contain identical active ingredients, Mounjaro could also be approved for OSA in the future. Once the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lilly.com\/news\/media\/media-kits\/mounjaro\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brand-name patent for Mounjaro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> expires in the early 2030s, generic tirzepatide may also hit the market as an FDA-approved OSA treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"navigating-treatment-options\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Navigating treatment options<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep apnea is a<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/sleep-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common problem<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that often dramatically negatively affects quality of life. She adds that patients can also improve nighttime breathing by sleeping on their sides or doing regular<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4470553\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tongue exercises<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cause significant<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-weight-loss-pills\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight loss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but Brantley-Lopez and Dr. Ott emphasize that it is not the only way to reduce body weight. Over the last decade, there have been advances in weight-loss medications that also improve sleep apnea, as well as non-surgical OSA treatment, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4242689\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oral appliances<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can be used during sleep.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, CPAP therapy remains the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccjm.org\/content\/90\/12\/755\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gold standard for sleep apnea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. CPAP machines gently force air through a mask and into the throat during sleep to<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/treatments\/22043-cpap-machine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keep the airway open<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The continuous flow of air is mild, but it is strong enough to keep the airway from collapsing, causing snoring, disordered breathing, and gasping.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For people with both OSA and obesity, weight loss can cause significant improvements in OSA symptoms. That\u2019s always been true. With a new wave of weight-loss medications like Zepbound and Wegovy, there may also soon be more medications in the sleep apnea treatment space.
