When you have just a couple of days\u2019 worth of amoxicillin left, check in with your healthcare provider to let them know how you\u2019re feeling. Then, it\u2019s up to you to take the medication exactly as prescribed. Finish all of your doses, even if your strep throat goes away before the amoxicillin runs out. Otherwise, the infection may come back stronger than before.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"do-you-need-antibiotics-for-strep-throat\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you need antibiotics for strep throat?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, antibiotics are needed for strep throat. Strep throat is normally self-limited. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even without antibiotic treatment, fever and symptoms commonly resolve within a few days.\u00a0 Antibiotics are given to reduce long-term complications.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0If antibiotics are not given within a week, untreated strep throat can lead to additional infections, kidney inflammation (which rarely causes kidney failure), or rheumatic fever (causing multisystem inflammation of the joints, heart muscle, or heart valves), especially in children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAmoxicillin is absolutely the first line of treatment for strep throat,\u201d says Dr. Yancey. \u201cIt works across the board for non-allergic patients who have strep throat. It\u2019s the drug of choice and the right thing to do. It will prevent heart disease and kidney disease.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"alternatives-to-amoxicillin-for-strep-throat\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alternatives to amoxicillin for strep throat<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your healthcare provider is unlikely to recommend an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/amoxicillin-alternatives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alternative to amoxicillin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for strep throat unless you\u2019re allergic to it or have severe kidney damage. \u201cAmoxicillin is the drug of choice for a reason,\u201d Dr. Yancey says. \u201cIt\u2019s the most effective and has the best side effect profile.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdiff.org\/who-we-are-new\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bruce Hirsch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, an infectious disease physician and board member of the Peggy Lillis Foundation, adds that there are many other antibiotics that can safely treat strep throat in people with penicillin\/amoxicillin allergies. However, there are side effects and risks associated with each.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAntibiotics kill off the bad germs but also impact all the billions of germs that live on and in our bodies and crowd out even worse bacteria,\u201d Dr. Hirsch explains. One of the \u201cbad\u201d bacteria that\u2019s kept in check by \u201cgood\u201d bacteria is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clostridioides difficile<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or C. diff. When this particular bacterium grows too much in the gut, it can cause severe diarrhea and a potentially life-threatening gastrointestinal condition called toxic colitis. Certain antibiotics are more likely to trigger a C. diff infection, so care must be taken to find the best treatment for each individual.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/clindamycin-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clindamycin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is particularly likely to cause C. diff,\u201d Dr. Hirsch says. \u201cFiguring out if there is a true penicillin allergy makes a big difference in getting the right antibiotic for the right condition.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your healthcare provider may consider the following antibiotics instead of amoxicillin:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/macrolides\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Macrolides<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0 A class of antibiotics often prescribed when people are allergic to penicillin and its derivatives.
