Becoming tolerant could lead a patient to seek <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher doses<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which further increases the risk of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adverse effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Nwandu says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">substance abuse<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one of her biggest concerns when prescribing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xanax<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cI\u2019ve seen how quickly <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">physical dependence<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can develop,\u201d she adds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-it-doesn-t-treat-and-may-mask-the-root-problem\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. It doesn\u2019t treat \u2014 and may mask \u2014 the root problem<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both experts emphasize that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xanax<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not intended to treat <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sleep disorders<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially chronic ones. \u201cIt can make you feel <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drowsy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it doesn\u2019t improve natural sleep architecture or address underlying issues like stress, poor sleep hygiene or habits, circadian rhythm disruption, or medical causes of insomnia,\u201d Dr. Nwandu says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xanax<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might help you fall asleep faster or more easily, but it does nothing to address the root cause (or causes) of poor sleep.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-it-causes-sedation-not-natural-sleep\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. In the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">short term<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xanax<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might help a person feel calmer and more relaxed in the evening, but it can lead to nighttime wakening a few hours later when the effects wear off, Dr. Kawamura says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long-term use<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">benzodiazepine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> drugs like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xanax<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/6132413\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can also cause<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a phenomenon called<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/3655003\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rebound insomnia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep problems<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> triggered by stopping the medication. \u201cI\u2019ve seen patients take it for a week or two, stop abruptly, and then experience worse sleep than before,\u201d Dr. Nwandu says. \u201c&#8230; That cycle can be difficult to break.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-high-risk-for-older-adults\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. High risk for older adults<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xanax<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can cause many cognitive<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/xanax\/what-is#side-effects\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as loss of coordination, memory problems, and confusion. These symptoms can be<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncqa.org\/report-cards\/health-plans\/state-of-health-care-quality-report\/deprescribing-of-benzodiazepines-in-older-adults-dbo\/#:~:text=The%202023%20American%20Geriatrics%20Society,fractures%20and%20motor%20vehicle%20crashes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> especially dangerous<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for older adults, who already have an increased risk of falls, fractures, and memory issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Kawamura says she would be \u201cvery concerned\u201d if an older patient reported <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taking Xanax<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a long time. \u201cSeek a second opinion from a provider specializing in the geriatric population,\u201d she recommends.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"are-there-exceptions-when-a-doctor-might-prescribe-xanax-for-sleep\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are there exceptions? When a doctor might prescribe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xanax<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for sleep<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are only a few times when a doctor might consider <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xanax<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for someone who has <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trouble sleeping<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These include situations when insomnia is triggered by an external stressor in someone who has not previously struggled with sleep, according to Dr. Kawamura.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Nwandu agrees: \u201cI might consider prescribing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xanax<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if the insomnia is clearly being driven by acute anxiety or panic \u2014 for example, a patient experiencing a short-lived crisis, grief reaction, or severe situational stress,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">short-term use<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xanax<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not risk-free. Precautions include using the lowest effective dose for the shortest effective timeframe and not stopping or adjusting your medication without the guidance of a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare provider<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
