Although ciprofloxacin decreases caffeine elimination, prolonging its effects, the clinical impact has not been well described, she says. Plus, some of your behaviors can have an influence. For example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK223808\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">smoking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> increases the metabolism of caffeine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, once you\u2019re past that time frame, you should be able to enjoy your coffee or tea again. \u201cOnce it is out of your system, you can resume your usual caffeine intake,\u201d says Dr. Zaring. \u201cBut be mindful of signs and symptoms of caffeine toxicity.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"practical-strategies-for-minimizing-the-risks\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Practical strategies for minimizing the risks<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By being proactive, you may be able to minimize the potential risks and reduce the likelihood of side effects when taking ciprofloxacin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before you take any new medication, one of the most important things that you can do is notify your healthcare provider about all prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications that you\u2019re taking, as well as any multivitamins or other supplements. In this case, it\u2019s important to make sure that you avoid taking anything that might interact with ciprofloxacin and cause adverse effects. These foods can reduce the effectiveness of ciprofloxacin by inhibiting its absorption. Take ciprofloxacin 2 to 4 hours before or 4 to 6 hours after products containing calcium.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Consider taking it with food or with a probiotic to help prevent<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stomach upset.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAntibiotics, like ciprofloxacin, may also kill gut bacteria, which can cause diarrhea,\u201d says Dr. Berg. Your local pharmacist can help you select a probiotic that is best for you.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Don\u2019t take over-the-counter <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/antacid\/what-is\"><b>antacids<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or other products that contain aluminum salts (or aluminum hydroxide), calcium salts, magnesium salts, or iron supplements at the same time that you take ciprofloxacin. Space them out by several hours before or after to avoid reducing the medication&#8217;s effectiveness.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Try to take the medication at the same time each day,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a once-daily dose of ciprofloxacin.
