GERD can make dogs very unhappy, but they have no way of telling their owners what&#8217;s going on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you suspect your dog has GERD, you might want to know: What<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/antacid\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antacid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can I give my dog? While most common over-the-counter heartburn medications are safe for dogs, it&#8217;s important to consult with a veterinarian to determine the best treatment plan based on their symptoms and medical history.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-your-dog-might-need-antacids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why your dog might need antacids<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antacids work by reducing the acidity of stomach contents. They can be helpful for dogs with conditions that cause heartburn or reflux. According to<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thrivepetcare.com\/locations\/south-carolina\/columbia\/south-carolina-veterinary-specialists-and-emergency\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anna Panyutin, DVM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a small-animal internal medicine specialist at South Carolina Veterinary Specialists and Emergency Care, there are two main conditions they can help treat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common reason to use antacids in dogs is to treat<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or acid reflux. Antacids &#8220;help reduce irritation and inflammation of the esophagus and throat caused by the acid in refluxed stomach contents,&#8221; Dr. Panyutin explains.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Gastric ulcers: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though less common, antacids can also be used to treat stomach ulcers in dogs. &#8220;The use of antacids in dogs is supported when a stomach or upper small intestinal ulcer\/ulceration (or ulcerative esophagitis) is known or strongly suspected, to reduce further injury and promote healing of the ulcer,&#8221; Dr. Panyutin notes.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 id=\"which-antacids-can-i-give-my-dog\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which antacids can I give my dog?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At appropriate doses for dogs, most human antacids are also safe for pups, according to Dr. Panyutin. However, the most effective treatment for acid reflux in dogs is proton pump inhibitors like Prilosec (omeprazole), she says. The following types of acid reducers could help your four-legged friend, with a vet\u2019s supervision.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"antacids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antacids<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of us are familiar with<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tums\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tums<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which are over-the-counter, chewable<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merckvetmanual.com\/pharmacology\/systemic-pharmacotherapeutics-of-the-digestive-system\/drugs-used-to-treat-gastrointestinal-ulcers-in-monogastric-animals\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antacids made of calcium carbonate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Tums work by neutralizing stomach acid and primarily treat heartburn and indigestion.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/vcahospitals.com\/know-your-pet\/calcium-supplements\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tums can be given to dogs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but you should consult with your vet before doing so. Your vet can give you info on how many Tums are safe to give your dog and how often you can give them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"proton-pump-inhibitors-ppis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/omeprazole\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Omeprazole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a proton pump inhibitor antacid sold under the brand name<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prilosec\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prilosec<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Dr. Panyutin says that it&#8217;s the preferred choice for use in dogs with reflux. &#8220;Only proton-pump inhibitor antacids, such as omeprazole or its sister drug esomeprazole, have been shown to be truly effective in dogs in veterinary studies and thus are the preferred choice,&#8221; she explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One important note is that omeprazole shouldn&#8217;t be given for extended periods. &#8220;When you block acid for a length of time, there can be a rebound acid production\/release that can have painful and deleterious side effects,&#8221; explains Laurie McCauley, DVM, veterinarian at<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/optimumpetvitality.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Optimum Pet Vitality<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She recommends limiting omeprazole treatment to six weeks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h2-blockers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">H2 blockers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pepcid\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pepcid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the brand name for<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/famotidine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">famotidine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an H2 blocker that decreases stomach acid production. It can be used to treat acid reflux and is sometimes used \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vcahospitals.com\/know-your-pet\/famotidine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-label\u201d to treat ulcers in dogs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Famotidine formulations include tablets and liquid suspensions. Sometimes it&#8217;s administered as an injection by your vet.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"antidiarrheals\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antidiarrheals<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/kaopectate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kaopectate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is mostly used to<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/vcahospitals.com\/know-your-pet\/kaolin-pectin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treat diarrhea, but it\u2019s also considered a gastrointestinal protectant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for minor reflux in dogs. It is available in liquid form and should only be given when recommended by a veterinarian, who can provide specific instructions for use in your dog. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In rare cases, it can cause constipation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"important-considerations-before-giving-your-dog-antacids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Important considerations before giving your dog antacids<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most important thing to keep in mind before giving your dog antacids is that you shouldn&#8217;t initiate their use without first discussing them with a veterinarian. &#8220;The use of antacids is not benign, and while they may be necessary in appropriate disease contexts, their use should be limited only as long as truly necessary,&#8221; Dr. Panyutin emphasizes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Panyutin also notes that all antacids have side effects, a phenomenon well documented in humans, especially with long-term use. &#8220;While there is a gap in research identifying the same breadth of antacids&#8217; side effects in dogs, we do at least have some evidence that they can result in gastrointestinal dysbiosis, or an imbalance of the normal bacteria within the gut, which can result in GI upset, such as vomiting, diarrhea, and inappetence,&#8221; she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These side effects\u2014loss of appetite and gastrointestinal upset (vomiting, diarrhea)\u2014are among the most common Dr. Panyutin sees in her veterinary patients.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"when-antacids-aren-t-enough\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When antacids aren&#8217;t enough<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You know that an antacid is working when your dog&#8217;s symptoms have decreased. If their symptoms are not improving or even worsening, it&#8217;s time to return to your veterinarian to discuss alternative options.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vcahospitals.com\/know-your-pet\/gastroesophageal-reflux-disease-gerd-in-nonbrachycephalic-dogs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of GERD in dogs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decreased interest in eating<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Issues with swallowing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Licking the lips more than usual<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Change in barking patterns<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A cough that doesn&#8217;t go away<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pacing or seeming restless at night<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seeming generally uncomfortable or moody<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regurgitation, often after eating<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s especially important to note whether your dog is<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/vcahospitals.com\/know-your-pet\/gastroesophageal-reflux-disease-gerd-in-nonbrachycephalic-dogs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">losing weight due to a very low appetite or appears to be regurgitating their food<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These symptoms are more serious and may require different medications than antacids. They also may require a more thorough plan of diagnostic testing by your vet to identify the underlying causes of your dog&#8217;s symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"preventive-measures\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preventive measures<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/gerd-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Managing acid reflux<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in dogs isn&#8217;t just about medication. It can be helpful to identify the root causes of your dog&#8217;s upset stomach and address them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A good place to start is with nutrition. &#8220;Symptoms like occasional stomach upset or soft, inconsistent stools can be easy to overlook or dismiss as &#8216;normal,&#8217; even when they affect your dog&#8217;s daily comfort,&#8221; says<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/rebecca-tremble-dvm-6588a2139\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rebecca Tremble, DVM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, veterinarian at Hill&#8217;s Pet Nutrition. &#8220;If you&#8217;re noticing digestive issues, I&#8217;d recommend talking with your veterinarian about nutrition because a targeted diet often can support pets with certain sensitivities.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understanding your dog&#8217;s dietary sensitivity involves exploring possible causes. For example, if you suspect your dog has a dietary sensitivity, Dr. McCauley recommends &#8220;switch[ing] protein sources or dog food companies as the vitamins, minerals, or other ingredients might be consistent across all or most of that company&#8217;s diets.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might also consider how your dog&#8217;s intestinal flora is impacting their reflux and looking for ways to balance their microbiome. \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/probiotic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Probiotic supplements<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can help replenish a healthy gut flora, and prebiotics feed that flora to keep it healthy,&#8221; Dr. McCauley says. However, she notes that dogs have a different gut flora balance than humans, so a dog-specific probiotic is needed for optimal effect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, it&#8217;s crucial to stay on top of your dog&#8217;s check-ups, and also feel free to reach out to your vet for follow-up questions. &#8220;If you ever have any concerns about the management of your pet&#8217;s condition, please know that you can always ask your veterinarian questions and engage in open discussion,&#8221; Dr. Panyutin emphasizes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-bottom-line\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antacids may be a good option for dogs with GERD or ulcers. Antacids for dogs are safe in most cases, though antacids like Omeprazole (Prilosec) are more likely to be effective and are more often recommended by your vet.
