While hydroxyzine may not necessarily take longer to work in older adults, its effects may last longer and feel stronger.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"gut-motility-issues\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gut motility issues<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with gut motility issues or conditions like gastroparesis often absorb hydroxyzine unpredictably because delayed gastric emptying changes when the drug actually hits the small intestine for absorption. &#8220;I&#8217;ve had patients report wildly inconsistent sedation timing, and the culprit was their underlying GI condition, not the drug itself,&#8221; explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gastrodoxs.com\/team\/dr-bharat-pothuri\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bharat Pothuri<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, gastroenterologist and founder of GastroDoxs in Houston.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"liver-function-problems\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liver function problems\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hydroxyzine is heavily metabolized in the liver, per Dr. Pothuri, so impaired liver function can affect the drug&#8217;s timeline of absorption. People with liver disease or even fatty liver may have significantly prolonged effects because their liver needs more time to metabolize the drug, he explains.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-does-the-effect-last\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long does the effect last?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may feel the effects of hydroxyzine for up to 8 hours, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalofficesofmanhattan.com\/our-team\/dr-jonathan-jennings\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jonathan Jennings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, internist with Medical Offices of Manhattan, though this can vary based on your age. Sometimes the effects only last 4 to 6 hours, says Dr. Alonzo, which is why it&#8217;s often taken multiple times per day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, hydroxyzine stays in your system for longer than that: Per Dr. Jhawar, it has a half-life of around 20 hours. That means <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK442023\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50% of the dose you take will still be in your system at that time<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and won&#8217;t be fully cleared until somewhere between 60 and 100 hours after your dose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This can leave some people susceptible to a hangover-like effect after hydroxyzine wears off. Per Dr. Jhawar, this includes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs of allergy or anaphylaxis, such as difficulty breathing, hives, and swelling of the face, lips, or tongue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs of heart arrhythmia (changes in heart rhythm) or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK441860\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long QT syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including palpitations, dizziness, and fainting\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/10042-priapism\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Priapism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (an erection in men that doesn&#8217;t go away after 3 hours)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drug interactions are also possible.
