Generally, it is advised to speak with your health care provider before starting any supplements or over-the-counter medications during pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for which form to choose, &#8220;there is not one single &#8216;best&#8217; form for everyone, but some forms are often better tolerated than others,&#8221; Dr. Kolettis says. She recommends <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/healthy-aging-and-longevity\/start-vetting-your-supplements\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">choosing supplements from reputable manufacturers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and discussing any new supplement with your prenatal care provider, particularly if you&#8217;re taking other medications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here&#8217;s what to know about the three main types.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"magnesium-glycinate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Magnesium glycinate<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Magnesium glycinate is the form most often recommended during pregnancy. Dr. Guirguis calls it his top pick: &#8220;It is highly bioavailable and gentler on the stomach than the other forms on the market.&#8221; Vanessa Archil, MD, OB-GYN, chairperson of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/sahchicago.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saint Anthony Hospital in Chicago<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, agrees, noting it is &#8220;highly absorbable and has less of a laxative effect when compared to magnesium citrate.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"cta-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/magnesium-glycinate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Magnesium glycinate coupons\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"magnesium-citrate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Magnesium citrate<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Magnesium citrate is the form of magnesium that&#8217;s most likely to cause loose stools. Magnesium may interact with certain medications, such as oral bisphosphonates, tetracyclines, and quinolone antibiotics. In addition, some medications, including diuretics and proton pump inhibitors, can affect magnesium status. It can also compete with calcium for absorption, so it should be spaced out with other supplements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should also be wary of taking magnesium supplements<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/what-can-magnesium-do-for-you-and-how-much-do-you-need-202506033100\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if you are taking laxatives that contain magnesium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as you might end up with very uncomfortable GI symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-bottom-line\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Magnesium is one of the most important nutrients you can prioritize during pregnancy.
