You don&#8217;t need to throw out a tube the moment the expiration date hits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;What I try to get patients to understand is that potency doesn&#8217;t just fall off a cliff at the expiration date,&#8221; says Dr. Gould. &#8220;It&#8217;s more of a gradual slope.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-it-safe-to-use-expired-tretinoin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it safe to use expired tretinoin?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Probably, within reason, but the bigger risk is that it simply won&#8217;t work as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The issue is reliability and quality of the medication, which becomes less certain,&#8221; says<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/drkormeilidermatology.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tanya Kormeili<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a dermatologist in Santa Monica, California. &#8220;Expired topical creams can only be less effective or become more irritating, not likely to be dangerous.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, using a recently expired tube that looks and smells normal is unlikely to harm you. What you&#8217;re really gambling with is efficacy. If you&#8217;re relying on tretinoin to treat acne or reduce signs of aging, a degraded formula may quietly undermine your results without any obvious sign that something is off.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-tell-if-your-tretinoin-has-gone-bad\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to tell if your tretinoin has gone bad\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here&#8217;s the frustrating truth: You often can&#8217;t.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The degradation isn&#8217;t something you can see happening,&#8221; Gould says. &#8220;It starts well before the product looks or smells different.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, there are a few visible signs that a tube has turned and shouldn&#8217;t be used.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Smell: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take a whiff. If it smells &#8220;off&#8221; or different from how it used to, that could be a sign you need a new tube.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Appearance: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any change in color or texture is worth taking seriously.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Separation: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the medication has split into distinct layers or chunks, it has gone bad.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If none of those changes are present, the risk of irritation or complications is lower, according to Dr. Kormeil, though the product may still have lost potency without any outward sign. When in doubt, she&#8217;s direct: &#8220;Throw it away!&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-accelerates-expiration\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What accelerates expiration<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three things degrade tretinoin faster than time alone: light, heat, and air.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Tretinoin is a retinoic acid, and the molecule is inherently unstable when it&#8217;s exposed to light, heat, or air,&#8221; says Dr. Gould. Dr. Kormeili adds that leaving a tube open speeds up the process even further.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Formulation makes a difference, too. Older versions of tretinoin were especially vulnerable to light exposure. Regardless of formulation, keeping it out in the open is a fast track to a weakened product.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-maximize-the-lifespan-of-your-retinoids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to maximize the lifespan of your retinoids<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few simple storage habits can go a long way toward keeping your tretinoin potent for as long as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Follow storage instructions.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The bathroom is a common choice, but it&#8217;s not a great one. Steam from a hot shower can create heat and humidity that degrade the formula. The same goes for windowsills in direct sunlight or anywhere with temperature swings. &#8220;Heat and sun exposure can break products down more quickly, so be sure to store tretinoin in a cool, dry place,&#8221; says Dr. Nichols.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Replace the cap immediately after application<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
