He explains that carvedilol does not automatically &#8220;fix&#8221; heart failure. Rather, it acts as a long-term barrier to limit the damaging effects of catecholamines on heart muscle cells. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/catecholamines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catecholamines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are a group of hormones produced by the adrenal glands, particularly epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine, which are released in response to stress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carvedilol causes the heart to pump less aggressively, which slows the heart rate. This timing works with the body\u2019s natural tendency to raise blood pressure and heart rate in the early morning hours, she says.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Gray also notes that taking extended-release carvedilol at night is not recommended. Blood pressure typically drops naturally during sleep, and taking the medication at that time could cause it to drop even further, leading to dizziness, lightheadedness, or falls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s best not to drink alcohol when on this medication. During the first few weeks of treatment, some people may experience worsening symptoms. Dr. Alptunaer says this is not unusual.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/carvedilol-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carvedilol can cause side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as dizziness, tiredness, chest pain, low blood pressure, low blood sugar, and joint pain. Most of these side effects are temporary and do not mean the treatment is not working. They are often an initial reaction of the body to the medication and usually resolve as the body gets used to the drug.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-should-you-do-if-carvedilol-does-not-seem-to-be-working\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What should you do if carvedilol does not seem to be working?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your carvedilol medication does not seem to be working, Dr. Alptunaer offers insight on what to do next:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Do not stop taking the medication abruptly.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cIt is a beta blocker, and if you stop a beta blocker, you can have a rebound effect, which will cause your blood pressure to severely spike. You can have severe chest pain and dangerous heart rhythm problems, and you can go into heart failure,\u201d he explains.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Monitor your blood pressure and pulse.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Keep a record of your blood pressure readings and pulse over time. It will be helpful to take that to your healthcare provider.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Contact your provider.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Reach out to your prescribing provider if symptoms are clearly worsening, especially if you experience trouble breathing, chest pain, or rapid weight gain. Seek urgent medical attention if you are experiencing other serious side effects such as bronchospasm or severe slowing of the heart (bradycardia).<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf a patient isn&#8217;t hitting their numbers, their provider will first check if they were taking it and at the right time, e.g., carvedilol must be taken with food,&#8221; Dr. Alptunaer says. If it was taken as instructed, the provider may adjust the dose, for example, by increasing it (if they are on a low dose) or changing how the doses are split.
