While moderate consumption is likely safe, overloading on caffeine consumption while on Lexapro may trigger serotonin syndrome in rare cases.

Does Lexapro make you more sensitive to caffeine?

Some folks also wonder whether Lexapro makes you more sensitive to caffeine in general. But, similar to Lexapro, caffeine can increase anxiety, which may blunt the effects of the medication.

Although most antidepressants aren’t a problem for coffee drinkers, there’s one exception: Luvox (fluvoxamine). According to Dr. Goel, Luvox inhibits the liver enzyme CYP1A2, which breaks down caffeine. As a result, “fluvoxamine slows caffeine clearance, so people can feel more wired than usual on the same amount of coffee,” Dr. Goel explains.

Tips on taking Lexapro to avoid caffeine side effects

It makes sense to consider your caffeine intake when starting any medication. For most people, mixing caffeine with Lexapro shouldn’t be an issue, and there’s nothing you have to change in your daily coffee routine.

In most cases, you don’t need to time your coffee or Lexapro in any particular order, such as spacing the two apart. “Timing doesn’t matter much here,” Dr. Aggarwal explains. “This isn’t an absorption-based interaction, so spacing coffee and the medication apart doesn’t change anything.”

Still, there are some tips you should keep in mind, especially if you are particularly sensitive to caffeine, or if you end up having side effects as your body adjusts to Lexapro.

Here are some expert tips.

Time your coffee intake around your sleep schedule

Most people taking Lexapro are looking to decrease mood issues and anxiety symptoms. Caffeine can make those symptoms worse, especially when consumed close to bedtime. “I tell patients to keep coffee in the morning and avoid it in the late afternoon and evening, because disrupted sleep worsens both mood and anxiety,” Dr. Goel suggests.

RELATED: Does Lexapro make you tired?

Consider cutting back in the first few weeks

Although most people don’t have issues with caffeine, some people find that they are more sensitive to it when first starting Lexapro. “You don’t need to give up coffee when starting Lexapro, but the first couple of weeks are when activation and jitteriness tend to peak, so that’s a sensible time to cut back a bit if you’re feeling on edge,” Dr. Goel recommends.

Consider limiting if you are a heavy coffee drinker

It might make sense to cut back on excessive caffeine intake. “The recommended safe amount of coffee per day is about two to three regular ( eight-ounce cups) while on Lexapro,” says Michelle DiBlasi, DO, chief of inpatient psychiatry at Tufts Medical Center. As such, heavy coffee drinkers (over three cups a day) may want to decrease their consumption if they are noticing side effects. The upper daily limit for caffeine consumption is 400 milligrams daily, per the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Take precautions if you have a sensitive stomach

Both Lexapro and coffee can cause gastrointestinal (GI) effects, like loose stools and nausea. Some simple precautions can help, though. “For patients whose GI symptoms flare on Lexapro, I’d also suggest skipping coffee on an empty stomach, since both can irritate the stomach independently,” Dr. Aggarwal recommends.

When to talk to your healthcare provider

There is no one-size-fits-all advice when it comes to Lexapro and caffeine.

“Everyone is different and may respond differently to drinking coffee while taking Lexapro,” Dr. DiBlasi says. It’s important not to compare yourself to others and to take action if you experience any concerning symptoms when combining Lexapro and coffee.

Here are a few general tips:

Wean off coffee to see if unwanted symptoms resolve. Symptoms may include anxiety, jitteriness, nausea, or trouble sleeping.

Cut back slowly to avoid caffeine withdrawal symptoms like excess drowsiness.

If symptoms linger or you have other questions/concerns about Lexapro side effects, seek medical advice from a healthcare professional. They can help you determine whether your symptoms are from the coffee, the Lexapro, or something else, and whether any adjustments are needed.

Lexapro (escitalopram) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant.
