Maybe some are a bit red, while others are pink, but they all look inflamed, right? You could be one of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nationaleczema.org\/research\/eczema-facts\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">31.6 million Americans affected by eczema<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is eczema?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eczema refers to dry, irritated, inflamed skin that tends to occur time and time again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBesides atopic dermatitis, which [usually occurs in children or those with a family history], general eczema is a heterogeneous condition of different types of inflammation in the skin that for different reasons come back,\u201d explains <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nealschultzmd.com\/about\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Neal Schultz<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a dermatologist in New York City.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some eczema may be red and flaky on the eyelids, while other eczema can be pink and flaky, and found around the nose. Eczema may appear on the arms and legs. A round-shaped rash or sore is referred to as nummular eczema, \u201cbecause it\u2019s round like a coin,\u201d explains Dr. Shultz. Eczema typically feels itchy and dry, but when scratched, it can also become thickened.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Who gets eczema?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEczema\u00a0can affect any gender, race, or age,\u201d explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecenterforderm.com\/physicians\/dr-bank\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. David Bank<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, founder and director of The Center for Dermatology, Cosmetic &amp; Laser Surgery in Mount Kisco, New York. \u201cIt tends to be more common in children with family members affected with\u00a0eczema, asthma, or seasonal allergies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exact cause of eczema? It\u2019s unfortunately unknown. But there are some ways to help treat this skin irritation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Eczema treatments<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s how to decide which eczema treatment is right for you, so you can get fast relief.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>If you notice eczema on your body\u2026 start with an at-home treatment.<br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those who just noticed an itchy rash, Dr. Schultz suggests trying to soothe it with non-prescription treatments to help reduce inflammation and relieve itching. \u201cMilk and water compresses, emollient creams or lotions (such as Cetaphil or CeraVe), and even ice are all good options to help ease the inflammation,\u201d he says. \u201cSome alternative treatments like botanicals and essential oils such as tea tree oil can work, too\u2014just don\u2019t use too concentrated of a form.\u201d Dr. Schultz recommends starting with an at-home soothing moisturizer or calendula oil or cream, and see how the rash reacts. Keep showers short and not too hot, and apply moisturizer right after bathing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>If after two to three days your eczema hasn\u2019t gotten better\u2026 try an over-the-counter (OTC) medicine.<br \/>\n<\/b>\u201c<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moisturizing is a very important part of the\u00a0eczema\u00a0patient&#8217;s daily routine,\u201d explains Dr. Bank, who recommends products with filaggrin to provide hydration to the skin, and ceramides and colloidal oatmeal to help the skin retain moisture and soothe the irritation. \u201cOpt for fragrance-free and sensitive skin formulations,\u201d he says. One example is Cetaphil Pro Restoraderm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OTC hydrocortisone cream can be helpful, too, explains Dr. Schultz. \u201cSome people even try atopical antihistamines [such as Benadryl cream], but I don\u2019t recommend them because they can cause allergies,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>If after three more days you still don\u2019t see improvement with your eczema\u2026 it\u2019s time to see a dermatologist.<br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cChances are that you\u2019ll need a prescription treatment, which can include cortisone that [can be] 1,000 times more potent than the OTC options,\u201d Dr. Schultz says. A Cortisone cream will help with the itch, but if you have scabs, you might need an antibiotic. \u201cIf a topical antibiotic like bacitracin or Polysporin doesn\u2019t work, you can need a prescription-strength topical antibiotic or eventually an internal antibiotic if you\u2019re very infected,\u201d Dr. Schultz says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Topical steroids<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> used twice daily for two weeks should be effective in reducing inflammation and itching, explains Dr. Bank. \u201cBut because it\u2019s not recommended to use steroids long term, other topical products may be prescribed, and over-the-counter products should be used in conjunction and as maintenance in\u00a0eczema\u00a0patients,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Injectable medication<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may be a solution for severe eczema. \u201cThis is an option prescribed by a dermatologist for someone with chronic atopic eczema whose lifestyle is affected by the condition,\u201d Dr. Bank says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Laser treatments<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are available as well. \u201cNarrow band UVB light is used to treat\u00a0eczema,\u201d explains Dr. Bank. \u201cIt can be administered in a doctor&#8217;s office or in the patient&#8217;s home if they have an approved device.\u201d In some cases, laser treatments can put eczema in remission.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNarrow band UVB is good for patients who are not candidates for other prescribed medications or who haven&#8217;t had adequate response to other treatments,\u201d Dr. Bank says. The downside? If it\u2019s not covered by insurance, there may be a higher out-of-pocket cost for this kind of treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/eczema-treatment-and-medications\/\"><b>Eczema treatments and medication<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re experiencing eczema, know you\u2019re not alone. It\u2019s a common skin disease with lots of possible remedies out there. Start small, and if you notice that the rash isn\u2019t getting any better, talk to your dermatologist about your options. \u201cYou don&#8217;t need to suffer,\u201d Dr. Bank says. \u201cThere are many effective treatments out there, but many require a\u00a0 prescription, so it is\u00a0important to visit a dermatologist for evaluation if you are dealing with\u00a0eczema.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Have you noticed patches of dry, itchy skin on your body?
