Nearly 80 million people are currently infected with HPV, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hpv\/parents\/about-hpv.html?CDC_AA_refVal=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cdc.gov%2Fhpv%2Fparents%2Fwhatishpv.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centers for Disease Control<\/a>. And while many infections clear up on their own, it\u2019s estimated that some 35,000 cancer diagnoses each year can be attributed to the virus.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the prevalence of HPV\u2014and its link to potentially deadly cancers\u2014physicians recommend vaccinating children with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/college-vaccinations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gardasil 9<\/a> at the age of 11 or 12 years old, before they\u2019ve engaged in sexual activities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone who hasn&#8217;t had any exposure to sexual contact is ground zero,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drsherry.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Sheryl A. Ross<\/a>, MD, an OB-GYN and author of the book <em>She-ology: The Definitive Guide to Women\u2019s Intimate Health. Period<\/em>. \u201cGardasil 9 can reduce the incidents of cancer as it relates to the cervix, penis, anus, head, neck, and throat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Until recently, the vaccine was recommended only for those up to the age of 26. However, updated guidelines released by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-approves-expanded-use-gardasil-9-include-individuals-27-through-45-years-old\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">U.S. Food &amp; Drug Administration<\/a> in October 2018, expanded the HPV vaccine for men and women from 27 to 45 years of age.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re an adult thinking about getting vaccinated against HPV, here\u2019s what you need to know.<\/p>\n<h2>Gardasil 9 HPV vaccine<\/h2>\n<p>Gardasil 9\u2014so named because it protects against nine strains of the virus (Types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58)\u2014is the primary HPV vaccine administered by doctors in the U.S. Introduced in 2006, it is the only vaccine that <em>prevents<\/em> certain types of cancers. Here\u2019s the full rundown of what Gardasil 9 helps protects against:<\/p>\n<p><strong>For girls and women:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cervical cancer<\/li>\n<li>Vulvar and vaginal cancers<\/li>\n<li>Anal cancer<\/li>\n<li>Precancerous cervical, vulvar, vaginal, and anal lesions<\/li>\n<li>Genital warts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>For boys and men:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Anal cancer<\/li>\n<li>Precancerous anal lesions<\/li>\n<li>Genital warts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Dosage depends on age. When administered before the age of 15, Gardasil 9 is a series of two shots; over the age of 15, it\u2019s a series of three.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>HPV vaccine risks<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Gardasil 9 side effects are typically mild, according to Dr. Ross.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe side effects really have to do with the injection site\u2014pain, redness, and some soreness in the arm,\u201d she says. \u201cSome people get faint and dizzy and maybe a little fever or headache, nausea, or even joint or muscle pain. But it&#8217;s really short-lived and minor.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Why you should get Gardasil 9<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re a sexually active adult, you may be thinking it\u2019s too late to get the HPV vaccine\u2014but that\u2019s not true, says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chop.edu\/doctors\/feemster-kristen-a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kristen Feemster,<\/a> MD, research director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children\u2019s Hospital of Philadelphia and medical director of the Immunization Program and Acute Communicable Diseases at the Philadelphia Department of Health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe likelihood that you&#8217;d be exposed to all nine types is fairly low, so you can still probably have some benefit from the vaccine,\u201d Dr. Feemster says.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ross agrees: \u201cThe question of, \u2018If you already have HPV harvest types, should you get vaccinated?\u2019 is a really great question because you don&#8217;t know what strain you really have. It&#8217;s hard to pinpoint, testing them one-by-one, so you could sleep with someone who could give you a whole new high-risk type. So, again, it&#8217;s a conversation to have with your doctor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And if you\u2019re recently divorced or coming out of a long-term monogamous relationship, Dr. Ross says you could be particularly susceptible to HPV, as safe sex probably hasn\u2019t been a top-of-mind concern for a while.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you look at the statistics with the divorce group, the 45-year-old women and men, they&#8217;re the second highest risk group for STDs,\u201d she explains. \u201cThey&#8217;re a great group to target&#8230; There\u2019s no downside to getting vaccinated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meaning, if you\u2019re in your 30s or 40s, it isn\u2019t too late to potentially protect yourself against a myriad of deadly cancers\u2014simply by getting a few shots in the arm.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the United States.
