After all, there\u2019s the advantage of an extra hour of sleep\u2014as long as you don\u2019t have kids (who often don\u2019t adjust quickly to time changes) or work the graveyard shift (when you\u2019ll be stuck working an extra hour). But, the reality is most people don\u2019t get that extra sleep when we switch from daylight saving (no \u2018s\u2019) time back to standard time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time changes\u2014whether they are from travel, fall back, or spring ahead\u2014can wreak havoc on your internal clock and have a real impact on your health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The effects of daylight saving time on your health<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hour difference in mid-fall and again, four months later in early spring can cause headache and heartache\u2014both literally and figuratively.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Time changes can trigger migraines.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with migraines are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/americanmigrainefoundation.org\/resource-library\/seasonal-migraine-triggers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">advised by experts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to stick to a normal schedule. That\u2019s hard to do when we have to change the clock twice a year. Add changes in barometric pressure and other seasonal shifts happening while we\u2019re adjusting the clock, and those susceptible to migraines can really suffer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plus, the transitions in and out of daylight saving time can affect the body\u2019s circadian rhythms, which release hormones that affect sleep. The American Migraine Association warns that, \u201cHaving an inconsistent sleep cycle can trigger migraines.\u201d Children can also suffer an uptick in migraine symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Time change might not throw off your medication schedule.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are worried about how the time change affects your daily medication schedule, you don\u2019t need to. \u201cIn the real world, patients already take their medications on a schedule that varies by one hour plus or minus,\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Krista B. Ellow, Pharm.D., author of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pillheavy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not Another Prescription for My Chronic Condition<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether it\u2019s eye drops, injectables, blood pressure medication, or insulin, Dr. Ellow explains that\u2014for most drugs\u2014it would \u201cnot cause serious impact to a patient&#8217;s day if they took it one hour before or after their normal time.\u201d However, she suggests those using inhalers for COPD and asthma could feel the time change and therefore should keep a rescue inhaler close by. \u201cA on- hour time change is nothing compared to how a patient&#8217;s medication regimen may change over the weekend when their sleep, work, and play schedules turn upside-down.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Time changes can cause heart trouble&#8230;in the spring.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There may be a little good news at this time of year.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/news\/2018\/10\/26\/can-daylight-saving-time-hurt-the-heart-prepare-now-for-spring\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The American Heart Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says that while researchers in Sweden, \u201cfound an average 6.7 percent greater risk of heart attack in the three days after the spring change \u2026 By contrast, risk for heart attack <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dropped<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 21 percent on the Tuesday after the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fall<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> time change.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Time changes influences your mood.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, a 2016<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/pub_releases\/2016-10\/au-ttf102716.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found a spike in depression during the switch back to standard time in the fall. Looking at a database of more than 180,000 people, researchers from the departments of psychiatry and political science at the universities of Aarhus, Copenhagen, and Stanford found \u201cthe transition from summer time to standard time were associated with an 11% increase .\u2009.\u2009. in the incidence rate of unipolar depressive episodes.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was no corresponding uptick in the change to daylight saving time in the spring. \u201cOne possible explanation is that the sudden advancement of sunset from 6 p.m. to 5 p.m .\u2009.\u2009. which in Denmark marks the coming of a long period of very short days, has a negative psychological impact on individuals prone to depression, and pushes them over the threshold to develop manifest depression,\u201d the authors write.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Time changes can affect your weight.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poor, or too little, sleep affects your willpower and your appetite. When you get less sleep, you\u2019re more likely to crave more calorie dense, high carb foods that will give you a quick boost of energy. And, you\u2019re less likely to have the mental strength to resist that hunger.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tips for adjusting to daylight saving time<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting Nov. 6, it\u2019s going to be darker when you wake up in the morning and darker when you get home. And as we tick closer to the shortest day of the year on Dec. 21, each day until then, we\u2019ll also have fewer daylight hours. To deal, here are some tips:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Know that it\u2019s only temporary.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rule of thumb is that it takes about a day to adjust for every hour of time difference, though the effects of daylight saving can seem drastic in the moment. Keep in mind that your body will acclimate to the change, likely sooner rather than later.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create a light experience for yourself.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That may mean using a light lamp in the early morning when it\u2019s still dark<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Or, it could simply mean making a point to expose yourself daily to 20 minutes of sunlight. Light can activate the hypothalamus in your brain and restore circadian rhythm.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fill your morning with activity, including exercise.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cResearch suggests that exercise is the best way to minimize depression,\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maria Torroella Carney, MD, the chief of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/feinstein.northwell.edu\/institutes-researchers\/our-researchers\/maria-torroella-carney-md-facp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Northwell Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. So get up and out and move your body.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take a warm shower.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The negative ions in the water can have a positive effect. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3598548\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has credited negative ions\u2014odorless, tasteless, and invisible molecules\u2014with increasing psychological health, lessening anxiety, and boosting overall well-being. It\u2019s believed that when negative ions reach our bloodstream, they increase serotonin levels, which, in turn, help alleviate depression and can even be an energy booster.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plan ahead.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those concerned about the health dangers associated with the change back to daylight saving time in March, plan ahead. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The theory behind time changes and mood changes exists, says Dr. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carney. <\/span><b>\u201c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What we don\u2019t know is how to prevent this,\u201d she says. <\/span><b>\u201c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What we do know is that exercise <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">throughout the year<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can prevent and minimize mood changes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hope for it to be eliminated.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daylight saving time began as an effort to make better use of daylight and to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeanddate.com\/time\/dst\/history.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">conserve energy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by using less artificial light. But, the concern over the health effects of this kind of time travel has made it all the way to state and national legislative agendas. Many are lobbying for a final fix. Their solution\u2014keep daylight saving time year round because it\u2019s standard time that really draws the most ire.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Mar. 2022, the Senate approved the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/senate-bill\/623\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sunshine Protection Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This would make daylight saving time the new, permanent standard time in November 2023. The measure must still pass through the House of Representatives, then go to the president before officially becoming law.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If we spring forward permanently, we won\u2019t have to worry about falling back ever again.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The November \u201cfall back\u201d to standard time can seem like a good deal.
