When to seek treatment for seasonal affective disorder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s the middle of January. The sun starts setting around 4 p.m. every day; the temperatures are struggling to rise above 35 degrees. And it\u2019s the fourth day in a row that you\u2019ve come home from work, put on your sweatpants, and collapsed on the couch to watch TV until you fall asleep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it a case of the winter doldrums\u2026 or something more serious, like seasonal affective disorder?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seasonal affective disorder (SAD)\u2014also known as seasonal depression\u2014impacts about half a million people in the United States every year, according to the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cleveland Clinic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It typically strikes in late fall and winter, but can also occur in the summer months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a change in season has left you feeling down, here\u2019s how to know when to reach out for help.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-is-seasonal-affective-disorder-different-from-clinical-depression\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How is seasonal affective disorder different from clinical depression?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though some people dismiss seasonal depression as nothing more than the \u201cwinter blues,\u201d it\u2019s still a depressive mood disorder\u2014it just happens to be triggered by changes in seasons, says University of Missouri Health Care psychiatrist Arpit Aggarwal, MD.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When diagnosing a patient with seasonal affective disorder, mental health providers look at how seasonal patterns relate to your behavior changes, activities, and overall mood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[SAD] can be diagnosed when at least two episodes of major depression (with each episode lasting for at least two weeks) have occurred in the last two years,\u201d Dr. Aggarwal says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, experiencing fatigue, loss of appetite, or low energy for a few days at a time is likely not depression\u2014but if your symptoms persist or happen on a seasonally recurring basis, you may be dealing with more than a temporary slump.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"symptoms-of-seasonal-affective-disorder\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of seasonal affective disorder\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not always easy to recognize the symptoms of depression in yourself, especially in the winter, when nearly everyone wants to hunker down and stay in bed. According to Dr. Aggarwal, these are the most common symptoms of major depression that may occur with SAD:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feeling depressed or \u201cdown\u201d almost every day;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a loss of interest in activities you used to enjoy;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a loss of energy or appetite;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">changes in sleep habits or trouble sleeping;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">difficulty concentrating;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feeling sluggish or agitated;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and feelings of guilt or thoughts of death or suicide.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also important to note that some SAD symptoms vary depending on the season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe more common type of seasonal depression that occurs in winter usually presents with increased sleep and appetite, weight gain, and low energy,\u201d says Aggarwal, \u201cwhereas seasonal depression occurring in summer may include sad or irritable mood, loss of appetite and weight, agitation, and insomnia.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"seasonal-affective-disorder-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seasonal affective disorder causes<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though we\u2019re not usually aware of it, our bodies are highly attuned to our environment. When the seasons change, so do many of the things around us\u2014chief among those changes, though, is the amount of sunlight we receive every day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSunlight availability has a big part in causing seasonal depression, as people living farther from the equator have more chance of [developing] seasonal depression,\u201d says Dr. Aggarwal. \u201cChanges in sunlight availability can affect hormones like serotonin and melatonin [and also your] circadian rhythm.\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10888476\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that SAD could occur when vitamin D stores were low, possibly because of decreased sunlight exposure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of these risk factors, per the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/seasonal-affective-disorder\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20364651\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mayo Clinic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, can contribute to SAD and winter depression: Melatonin regulates your sleep patterns, while serotonin is a brain chemical that affects mood. Lowered amounts of either can trigger depressive episodes, as can the disruption to your body\u2019s biological clock and usual routine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What about summer depression, when there\u2019s an abundance of sunshine? Aggarwal says there is a theory that increased pollen counts and allergies during the spring and summer may trigger SAD, though it\u2019s a theory not yet fully understood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notably, there is also a genetic component to SAD, which has been found to run in families\u2014and unfortunately, some people with a family history of depression are simply more susceptible than others. There are several treatment options available for all types of depression, like taking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/antidepressants\">antidepressant medication<\/a> and receiving counseling, talk therapy, or cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) from a qualified mental health professional.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s even one treatment prescribed solely for seasonal forms of depression:<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/tests-procedures\/light-therapy\/about\/pac-20384604\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">light therapy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a.k.a. phototherapy. Dr. Aggarwal says it\u2019s usually the first line of treatment for seasonal depression and involves getting exposure to bright light after waking up using a special lightbox. It\u2019s considered safe and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/seasonal-affective-disorder-bring-on-the-light-201212215663\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can be implemented at home<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10584776\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mild side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It may not completely eliminate symptoms for nearly half of people with SAD, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/publications\/depression-what-you-need-to-know\/index.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institute of Mental Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But it can help to improve symptoms, especially in combination with other therapies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some physicians recommend a vitamin D supplement for patients with low levels of the \u201csunshine vitamin.\u201d But, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bmcresnotes.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/1756-0500-7-528\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on its efficacy as a treatment has mixed results.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, it\u2019s important to remember that feeling sad or uninspired for a few days during the winter months may be normal\u2014but struggling to function, feeling hopeless, or having suicidal thoughts is not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you feel sad for more than two weeks at a time and it starts interfering with your daily activities, you should talk to your primary care doctor or a mental health provider to see if more help is needed,\u201d Dr. Aggarwal advises.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthy sleeping habits, aerobic exercises, and daily walks all have a positive impact on people suffering from SAD.
