When they became quite painful and didn\u2019t seem to be going away, I made an appointment with my doctor. I had shingles. I had always thought of shingles as a disease only older adults developed\u2014but I was in my 30s!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was lucky that my outbreak stayed isolated to my arm and hand instead of spreading to my torso or face as it often does; but having shingles was still horrible. I had to keep the rash covered by clothing when in public, which meant walking around with a glove on one hand. It also meant I had to wait several weeks before I could meet my newborn nephew.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take it from my experience, if there\u2019s any way you can avoid shingles, you should. Thankfully, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/shingrix\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shingrix vaccine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offers over 90% protection against the herpes zoster virus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is shingles?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shingles and chickenpox are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/11036-shingles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">caused by the same virus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. After you\u2019ve contracted chickenpox and it has run its course, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ninds.nih.gov\/Disorders\/Patient-Caregiver-Education\/Hope-Through-Research\/Shingles-Hope-Through-Research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">varicella-zoster<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> virus stays dormant in the body for years and can reactivate later in the form of shingles. Shingles is not contagious, but the virus that causes it is. People who are not immune to chickenpox (either from having chickenpox or receiving the chickenpox vaccine) can contract chickenpox from people who have shingles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of shingles include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A painful rash and blisters on one side of the face or body<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chills<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upset stomach<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rash is usually present, but not always. Most of the time, doctors can diagnose shingles based on symptoms, but tests are available if there is any uncertainty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approximately<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/shingles\/surveillance.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 in 3 people in the United States <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will develop shingles in their lifetime. Shingles usually clears up within 3 to 5 weeks, but it can cause lasting complications. The most common complication is postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), a burning pain that lasts long after the rash and other symptoms have improved. This occurs in about 1 in 5 people who get shingles. Other rare but serious complications, such as blindness, can also occur. The best way to prevent these complications is to avoid getting shingles altogether. This is where the shingles vaccination comes in.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is Shingrix?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Produced by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Shingrix is a recombinant vaccine introduced and approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2017. It became the second shingles vaccine on the market, after Zostavax was introduced in 2006.\u00a0 Unlike Zostavax, Shingrix is not a live vaccine. Meaning, it is not possible to contract shingles or chickenpox from the immunization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it is not the only shingles vaccine available, Shingrix is currently considered the most effective. It is 96% to 97% effective at the prevention of shingles in people aged 50 to 69, and 91% effective against shingles in people aged 70 and older.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Shingrix schedule<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vaccine is given as two injections in the upper arm, two to six months apart. Both doses of Shingrix are needed to offer maximum protection against shingles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shingrix has been shown to be effective for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2018\/03\/180307095243.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at least three years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but is currently being studied for its efficacy at the 10-year mark and is expected to last much longer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is not recommended for protection against chickenpox.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Who should get Shingrix?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shingrix is recommended for adults over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/vaccinations-older-adults\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50 years old<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Shingrix is still recommended even if someone has had shingles already; has already received the shingles vaccine Zostavax; or is not sure if they have had chickenpox.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone who has had chickenpox can get shingles, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/shingles-treatment-and-medications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people who are at higher risk include<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People over 50 years of age<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with compromised immune systems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People taking medications that weaken the immune system<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People living with chronic illness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with HIV<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/cid\/article\/60\/5\/781\/290708\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may also be a factor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Who should not get Shingrix?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are not immune to chickenpox, you should receive a chickenpox vaccine instead of Shingrix. If you are unsure, your doctor can check for immunity via bloodwork.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who currently have shingles will need to wait until they have recovered to get the vaccine. People who have a fever of 101.3 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, or are acutely ill will also need to wait on the vaccine until they are fully recovered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who are pregnant or breastfeeding should consult with their physicians before receiving the vaccine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with all medications, do not get the vaccine if you are allergic to any of its ingredients or have had a severe reaction to Shingrix in the past.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the side effects of Shingrix?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/vpd\/shingles\/public\/shingrix\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Shingrix vaccine are usually mild and last only a few days. Common side effects include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain, redness, and swelling at the injection site<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Injection site itching<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stomach and digestive complaints (including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and\/or stomach pain)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle pain\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tiredness\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chills, fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally feeling unwell<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious reactions are rare, but can include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergic reactions including rash, hives (urticaria)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, which may cause difficulty in swallowing or breathing (angioedema)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased risk of Guillain-Barr\u00e9\u00a0 syndrome, a serious nerve system disorder<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you experience any serious side effects after the vaccine, contact your healthcare professional.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Shingrix vs Zostavax: Which shingles vaccine is better?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first shingles vaccine, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zostavax\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zostavax<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, differs from Shingrix in a number of ways. Zostavax (also called zoster vaccine live) is a live virus while Shingrix is not, making it advantageous for those who cannot receive live vaccines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shingrix is administered via two doses, whereas Zostavax <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merckvaccines.com\/Products\/Zostavax\/dosing-administration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is administered<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of its efficacy, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2018\/12\/11\/675536735\/scramble-for-shingles-vaccine-how-to-cope-with-shingrix-shortage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shingrix is recommended over Zostavax<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, particularly in elderly adults. While Shingrix is over 90% effective, Zostavax is about 51% effective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have received the Zostavax vaccine, it\u2019s recommended that you still get the Shingrix vaccine; however, if you have received the Shingrix vaccine, you do not need the Zostavax vaccine unless your doctor advises so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Zostavax vaccine is still available and is typically used if someone is unable to get the Shingrix vaccine due to allergy or adverse reactions, or if Shingrix is unavailable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Continue reading<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/shingrix-vs-zostavax\/\">Shingrix vs Zostavax<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><b>How much does Shingrix cost?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cost for a complete course (two doses) of Shingrix is about $237.78. It is covered by most insurance companies and by Medicare Part D. Shingrix is not covered by Medicare Part A or Part B, but costs can be reduced by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/shingrix\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">using a SingleCare coupon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at our partner pharmacies, such as CVS, Walmart, and Walgreens.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Shingrix shortage: Where can I get Shingrix?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shingrix is in high demand. The high demand is partly due to the increased efficacy of Shingrix over Zostavax. Also playing a factor is the increased range of people who are suggested to receive the vaccine\u2014people over 50 versus Zostavax\u2019s recommendation of people over 60. This is good news in terms of keeping shingles at bay, the more people vaccinated the better. But in recent years, the demand has been higher than the manufacturer anticipated, leading to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicaleconomics.com\/article\/shingrix-shortage-advice-physicians\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a shortage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Presently, Shingrix is no longer on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/hcp\/clinical-resources\/shortages.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">list<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of vaccine shortages.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Shingrix supplies are low, pharmacists and physicians prioritize people who are at a higher risk of contracting and\/or suffering serious consequences of shingles. In the meantime, there is plenty of the vaccine to go around.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take it from me, shingles is an illness you definitely want to avoid. It is painful, inconvenient, and can have lasting effects on your health. Your best defense is the Shingrix vaccine.
