When you combine those factors with the sometimes stressful Christmas season, it can make heart problems a real concern if you\u2019re already at risk because of your diet, a lack of exercise, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/coronavirus-sequelae\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">post-COVID-19 symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or habits like smoking or drinking alcohol.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/363\/bmj.k4811\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year\u2019s Day all showed an increase in heart attack rates. People in the study were 20% more likely to have a heart attack on New Year\u2019s Day and 37% more likely on Christmas Eve. This could be due to a mix of overeating, anger, anxiety, sadness, grief, or stress, all of which can increase the risk of heart problems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4 ways to avoid a holiday heart problem<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may not be able to do anything about cold temperatures or a lack of sunlight during the winter, but you can try these healthy heart tips over the holidays by using common sense and following a few general guidelines when it comes to diet, exercise, and lifestyle.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Watch your diet<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5514330\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show that the average person gains weight\u2014sometimes quite a bit of weight\u2014from Thanksgiving through New Year\u2019s Day. Whether it\u2019s a big family dinner, an office Christmas party, bowls of candy at the bank, or all three\u2014the chances to eat too much unhealthy food are everywhere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cKeep in mind your overall health,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspenhospital.org\/people\/joseph-schuller\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joseph L. Schuller<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a cardiologist at Aspen Valley Hospital in Colorado. \u201cIt\u2019s fine to enjoy oneself and eat and drink perhaps more than you would normally, but keep it in moderation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthy eating principles should still guide you during the holidays. Drink in moderation<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First named in 1978, holiday heart syndrome is the term for irregular heart patterns in those who are otherwise healthy. It\u2019s attributed to stress, overeating, and an overconsumption of alcohol.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why moderation should also be the goal when it comes to drinking alcohol. It\u2019s fine to have a celebratory glass of champagne or a beer with friends, but regularly drinking more than one or two drinks at a time can lead to a host of problems, from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/healthy-living\/healthy-eating\/eat-smart\/nutrition-basics\/alcohol-and-heart-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to heart failure. As long as it gets you up and moving, it\u2019s better than no activity at all, especially if you commit to doing it every day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople should find an exercise plan that works for them,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theta.utoronto.ca\/peter-cram-md-mba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peter Cram<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a general internist and professor of internal medicine at the University of Toronto. \u201cThat could be exercising in your home, it could be joining a gym, but people should exercise as much as they can.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/blood-pressure-after-exercise\/\"><b>How exercise affects your blood pressure<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Make healthy lifestyle choices<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choosing to live a healthy lifestyle all year long is one of the best ways to make sure your heart attack risk doesn\u2019t increase when the holidays roll around. That can mean taking steps to avoid other illnesses and not indulging in unhealthy habits. Especially during cold and flu season, take precautions to avoid catching contagious viruses like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/coronavirus-and-heart-disease\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID-19<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Wear a mask, wash your hands, and stay home if you\u2019re feeling ill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGet the flu shot, stop smoking, don\u2019t drink too much alcohol, don\u2019t do drugs,\u201d Dr. Cram says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smoking is one of the major causes of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK525170\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cardiovascular disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which often leads to a heart attack or stroke. Tobacco use can also lead to numerous other health problems, and illegal drugs like marijuana, cocaine, and methamphetamines may contribute to heart problems, as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to prescription drugs, however, Dr. Cram recommends sticking with the plan you and your healthcare provider came up with. \u201cThe holidays probably aren\u2019t the time to stop taking your prescription medications,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prescription medicine can help you manage physical ailments, as well as the emotional issues that many people experience around Christmas.
