Whether it\u2019s lack of information or wishful thinking, we hope that conditions like depression are things our kids won\u2019t need to deal with until they are much older\u2014or, even better, not at all. The truth is that children\u2019s mental health issues are common.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worldwide 10% of children and adolescents experience mental health disorders, according to the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/mental_health\/maternal-child\/child_adolescent\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Health Organization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The problem has only worsened during the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/02-03-2022-covid-19-pandemic-triggers-25-increase-in-prevalence-of-anxiety-and-depression-worldwide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID-19 pandemic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Because issues are so common, it\u2019s important we know how to talk to our children about mental health.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What mental health problems are common in children and teens?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children and adolescents can experience the same mental health struggles that adults do; but some of the more common conditions include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/anxiety-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/depression-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other mood disorders<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Addiction<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ptsd-epidemic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PTSD<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/binge-eating-disorder-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating disorders<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you know if your child has mental health issues?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York City licensed psychologist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drjeph.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jephtha Tausig, Ph.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, suggests parents ask themselves these questions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have there been significant changes in the child or adolescent\u2019s behaviors?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are moods different?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have there been changes in:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">personal hygiene?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">personal friendships?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relationships with family members?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">participation in activities that they used to enjoy?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sleeping and eating?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How is your child doing in school?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How is your child doing with extra-curriculars?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.compassionateeducators.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marie Kueny<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, M.S., licensed school counselor in Kenosha, Wisconsin, suggests also looking for:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physical symptoms such as frequent headaches, stomachaches, trouble sleeping<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased difficulty concentrating<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concerns from your child\u2019s school about behaviors not typical of your child<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Substance use<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self-harming behaviors or talk of self-harm<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\t\t<div class=\"singlecare-dynamic-newsletter-wrapper sin-newsletter-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"heading\">Get our mental aria-live=\"polite\"><\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to support a child with mental health issues<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cParents should first speak to their child about what they have observed in a loving and compassionate way,\u201d says Kueny. \u201cWhen you become aware that there is a potential concern, make time immediately to have a private one-on-one conversation with the child, free from distractions. Establish to your child that the child is a priority in your life and it\u2019s your job as a caregiver to help ensure their safety. Make sure the child is aware of your concern and that you are there to listen wholeheartedly to any challenges they are facing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/finding-right-medication-doctor-mental-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seeking professional help is also important<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cContact a licensed, trained professional (pediatrician, guidance counselor, school psychologist, clinical psychologist, psychiatrist etc.) who is specifically trained and works with children and adolescents, and ask for a mental health evaluation or check-up to see what may be going on,\u201d says Dr. Tausig. For symptoms that are particularly worrisome, you might want to look for inpatient or partial hospital programs in your area.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How can parents talk to their children about mental health?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First and foremost, it\u2019s understandable if you don\u2019t know the best way to talk to your child. Many parents don\u2019t\u2014and that\u2019s why it\u2019s important to seek help and follow the advice below. Alternatively, you may have a child who doesn\u2019t want to discuss certain issues with you as parents. Don\u2019t be discouraged if this happens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cIt\u2019s helpful to explain [to children struggling with mental health concerns] that they are not alone,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that they are not \u201cstupid\u201d or \u201cweird\u201d or \u201ccrazy\u201d for feeling the way they do,\u201d says Dr. Tausig. \u201cIt may also be helpful for parents to connect with other parents whose children or adolescents are struggling with the same or similar issues, just as it may be helpful for the child or adolescent themselves to meet peers who are also experiencing the same or similar symptoms.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Relating mental health to physical health can also be helpful,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests Kueny. \u201cA parent can tell the child, \u2018Some children have asthma, which can make it difficult to breathe. A child with asthma may have to see a doctor to talk about their breathing. The doctor may tell them things they can do to feel better. Sometimes medication is helpful, too. What you are experiencing right now is kind of like that. We may need to talk to someone who knows how to help you feel better.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Parents don\u2019t need to wait until their children are experiencing issues to teach children about mental health.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cTeaching children the basic emotions, the function of emotions, how the emotions often manifest in our bodies and associated action urges with appropriate coping skills can go a long way,\u201d says Nicole Garber, MD, chief of psychiatry at<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meadowsranch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Meadows Ranch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Wickenburg, Arizona.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental health education can start right from birth, according to Kueny. \u201cThe foundation for understanding one&#8217;s mental health should begin immediately. For example, a crying baby can be told, \u2018I see you are sad right now, I will do my best to help\u2019; A parent can say to a frustrated toddler, \u2018You seem frustrated, let\u2019s try to solve this problem\u2019; As the child gets older, the parent can routinely check in with their child by asking what makes them excited, nervous, sad, overwhelmed, etc.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How can parents talk to their children about suicide?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s something no parent wants to think about, but as the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sptsusa.org\/parents\/talking-to-your-kid-about-suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">second leading cause of death in youth ages 10-24<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it is an important component to discussions about mental health. Contrary to popular belief, discussing suicide does not increase the likelihood of someone dying by suicide\u2014 in fact, it opens the door for your child to discuss thoughts or feelings they have had and have been hesitant to share.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide (SPTS) has these recommendations for talking to teens about suicide:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pick a time when you have the best chance of getting your child\u2019s attention.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think about what you want to say ahead of time and rehearse a script if necessary.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If this is a hard subject for you to talk about, admit it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask for your child\u2019s response. Be direct.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Listen to what your child has to say.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t overreact or under-react.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SPTS encourages parents to look for the &#8220;FACTS&#8221; warning signs:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>F<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014Feelings<\/span><br \/>\n<b>A<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014Actions<\/span><br \/>\n<b>C<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014Changes<\/span><br \/>\n<b>T<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014Threats<\/span><br \/>\n<b>S<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014Situations<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sptsusa.org\/parents\/talking-to-your-kid-about-suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for more in-depth details of each recommendation and for an expansion on the FACTS warning signs, or download the PDF <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sptsusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Talking_to_your_Kids_About_Suicide.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take any of these indications seriously, and consult with a medical professional if you observe troubling thoughts of behavior surrounding suicide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure your child has access to the number for a suicide\/mental health hotline such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/suicidepreventionlifeline.org\/help-yourself\/youth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lifeline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a 24 hour service that can be reached by calling 1-800-273-TALK (8255). It\u2019s appropriate to call 911, if necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Seeking help for the whole family<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having a child who is struggling with mental health issues can be challenging for the entire family. Parents can sometimes feel that they have done something wrong. Dr. Tausig offers this reassuring reminder:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMental illness of any kind is not a reflection upon the individual or their family.\u00a0 It is not a judgment from the divine, nor is it a litmus test as to someone\u2019s worth. It has always been part of the human condition, and as such, individuals who experience symptoms of mental illness and their families deserve to be treated with compassion as well as the very best of care.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s also important for parents to remember to monitor their own mental health. Parents can become overwhelmed by their child&#8217;s difficulties, and could benefit from seeking help for themselves. Seeing a therapist would help parents manage their own stresses, and help the family as a unit.
