In fact, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, there are literally hundreds of medications that can cause harm when combined with booze.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mixing alcohol and medication can cause serious side effects including nausea, vomiting, headaches, drowsiness, fainting, or reduced coordination. It can also increase your risk of internal bleeding, trouble breathing, and heart problems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turning down a festive drink might seem<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bah humbug\u2014but, depending on the medications you take, it might be your only option. \u201cWhenever you are on a medication, it\u2019s important to understand the different interactions it may have with other substances,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/author\/ramzi-yacoub\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ramzi Yacoub, Pharm.D., chief pharmacy officer for SingleCare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIf you drink alcohol \u2026 it is important to discuss this with your pharmacist or prescriber so they can advise you on what you can or can\u2019t drink with,\u201d he adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"10-alcohol-drug-interactions\"><b>10 alcohol-drug interactions<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is your medication on the \u201cno\u201d list? We\u2019re barely scratching the surface with this list, but you should definitely think twice before drinking alcohol with these 10 categories of prescription and over-the-counter drugs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-antibiotics\"><b>1. Antibiotics<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may be feeling 100% better by day nine of your 10-day course of antibiotics, but that doesn\u2019t mean it is a good idea to hit the open bar at your company party. If you do, chances are you will wind up with an upset stomach, a headache, nausea, and vomiting. Certain antibiotics, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/metronidazole\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metronidazole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (also known by the brand name <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/flagyl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flagyl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tinidazole\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tinidazole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Tindamax), may even cause severe vomiting, headache, and flushing when combined with liquor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-anti-anxiety-medications\"><b>2. Anti-anxiety medications<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you take a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/alcohol-anti-anxiety-medication\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">benzodiazepine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/xanax\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xanax (alprazolam)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ativan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ativan (lorazepam)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to help manage your anxiety, you are going to want to steer clear of alcohol while it is in your system\u2014the combination can lead to a fatal overdose. Signs of trouble include drowsiness, dizziness, difficulty breathing, and behavioral problems, says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michaelene Kedzierski, R.Ph.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a former clinical professor and substance abuse consultant at the University of Washington School of Pharmacy. Blood thinners<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Used to treat clotting disorders (such as deep vein thrombosis or thrombophilia) and to prevent strokes and heart attacks, blood thinners like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/warfarin-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warfarin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (commonly known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/coumadin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coumadin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) should <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/blood-thinners-and-alcohol\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">never be mixed with alcohol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Dr. Yacoub says. If you do combine them, you could find yourself in serious trouble because the medication interferes with the clotting process, he says. Alcohol <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> interferes with clotting so, when you mix the two, the risks increase even more. Next thing you know, you are suffering from an internal bleed\u2014and you might not even know it because internal bleeding can go unnoticed until it\u2019s too late. Painkillers<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prescription or non-prescription, it is essential to avoid alcohol while taking painkillers. With opioids, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/oxycodone-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oxycodone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or hydrocodone, the risks are respiratory depression, excessive drowsiness, impaired motor control and overdose, Kedzierski says. But even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/over-the-counter-painkillers-with-alcohol\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over-the-counter painkillers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can spell trouble. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/acetaminophen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acetaminophen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (aka Tylenol), for example, is metabolized by the liver. So is alcohol, and when the two are mixed, liver damage or even liver failure are very real possibilities. As for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ibuprofen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, taking the drug regularly is associated with an increased risk of intestinal and\/or stomach bleeding. Alcohol, Dr. Yacoub says, exacerbates this risk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-sleeping-pills\"><b>5. Sleeping pills<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obviously, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/alcohol-and-sleep-aids\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescription sleep medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ambien\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ambien (zolpidem)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lunesta\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lunesta (eszopiclone)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/temazepam\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restoril (temazepam)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is designed to help you catch some ZZZs. Alcohol is also a sedative. Use the two simultaneously and the effects of the sleeping pill are going to increase. Expect to experience excessive sleepiness, dizziness, slowed breathing, and impaired motor control, says Dr. Yacoub.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ambien-and-alcohol\/\"><b>What happens when you mix Ambien and alcohol?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-allergy-medications\"><b>6. Allergy medications<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First-generation antihistamines like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/benadryl-allergy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benadryl (diphenhydramine)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/chlor-trimeton\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chlor-Trimeton (chlorpheniramine)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/clemastine-fumarate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tavist (clemastine)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/hydroxyzine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atarax (hydroxyzine)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> not only stop the itchy eyes, sneezing, and hives that often accompany an allergic reaction\u2014they also can impair your motor control, cause dizziness, and make you very, very sleepy. Because alcohol can also cause these same side effects, you\u2019ll want to make sure to avoid it when you take these <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/benadryl-allergy-medicine-and-alcohol\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergy meds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The exception? If you happen to have an anaphylactic reaction to an allergen after you\u2019ve had a drink\u2014in that case, take the antihistamine (and seek emergency medical help).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second-generation antihistamines <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/allegra-allergy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allegra (fexofenadine)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/claritin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claritin (loratadine)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> don\u2019t typically cause the sorts of side effects that are intensified by alcohol, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zyrtec-allergy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec (cetirizine)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/xyzal-allergy-24hr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xyzal (levocetirizine)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should not be combined with alcohol. Cough medicine<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes that annoying cough hangs around much longer than any of the other symptoms that come with annoying seasonal viruses. And since you are feeling mostly better, it might seem logical to take a dose of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/cough-syrup-and-alcohol\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cough medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before heading out to that wine tasting event you\u2019ve been looking forward to. Unfortunately, as long as you need the meds, you are going to need to pass on the wine. Why? Well, OTC cough medicines tend to contain a mix of ingredients (like dextromethorphan, acetaminophen, antihistamines, decongestants) that each have their own individual alcohol interactions, says Dr. Yacoub. Many cough syrups even <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contain<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> alcohol, he warns, so if you are drinking along with taking your NyQuil, you could be consuming alcohol in excess without even realizing it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prescription cough suppressants (like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/promethazine-codeine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">promethazine-codeine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) are powerful central nervous system depressants whose effects would be increased by alcohol, leading to excess drowsiness and dizziness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is extremely important to understand the ingredients in these medications and avoid alcohol [while taking them] as they may cause drowsiness, dizziness, liver damage, and nausea,\u201d he explains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/flu-cold-medicine-and-alcohol\/\"><b>What happens when you mix cold and flu medicine and alcohol?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"8-muscle-relaxers\"><b>8. Muscle relaxers<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That muscle spasm in your neck or tightness in your back has been interfering with your life for days now. Unfortunately, if you are taking a muscle relaxer to deal with the pain, it is about to interfere with your plans to sip a mimosa this weekend at the brunch your best friend is hosting, too. Like many of the meds on this list, muscle relaxers like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cyclobenzaprine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amrix\/Fexmid\/Flexeril\u00a0 (cyclobenzaprine)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/methocarbamol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robaxin (methocarbamol)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tizanidine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zanaflex (tizanidine)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> come with side effects like dizziness, drowsiness, impaired motor control and respiratory depression.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe combination of alcohol with these types of medications may increase these side effects,\u201d Dr. Yacoub says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"9-proton-pump-inhibitors-and-heartburn-medications\"><b>9. Proton pump inhibitors and heartburn medications<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sorry to break the news, but if you decide to take <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nexium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nexium (esomeprazole)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prilosec\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prilosec (omeprazole)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or one of the numerous other PPIs or heartburn medications out there, to ease your horrible heartburn after a gluttonous margarita-and-taco night, prepare to experience some unpleasant side effects, like nausea, a headache and drowsiness, says Dr. Yacoub. Same goes for those who take one of these medications for chronic GI issues, such as GERD or eosinophilic esophagitis. Furthermore, alcohol will increase stomach acid production, which is one of the root causes of heartburn, indigestion, and stomach ulcers. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/alcohol-and-heartburn-medication\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proton pump inhibitors and heartburn (prescription and OTC) meds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are used to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treat<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stomach acid production, so in a sense you are rendering your medication pointless when you mix it with alcohol.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"10-blood-pressure-and-heart-disease-medications\"><b>10. Blood pressure and heart disease medications<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last but not least, mixing blood pressure and\/or heart disease medications (like beta blockers, ACE inhibitors, alpha blockers and numerous others) with alcohol is a definite \u2018nope\u2019 according to Kedzierski and Dr. Yacoub. The danger?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe combination of these medications and alcohol can lead to excessive blood pressure lowering,\u201d explains Dr. Yacoub. \u201cWhen your blood pressure is too low, it can lead to sedation, dizziness, lightheadedness, and increased risk of falls and fainting.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"alcohol-and-medication-the-bottom-line\"><b>Alcohol and medication: The bottom line<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you&#8217;re taking any of the above medications, think twice before knocking a few back at your company happy hour\u2014your body (and your coworkers) will thank you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you or a loved one need help to stop drinking, there are many resources for people with alcohol use disorders.
