Thankfully, there are meningococcal B vaccines such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/bexsero\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bexsero<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can help prevent this dangerous illness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is meningitis?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meningococcal disease, caused by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neisseria meningitidis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> bacteria, is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/meningococcal\/downloads\/17-275138D-MeningococcalDis-B-Outbreak-FS.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rare but serious infection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There are at least 12 types, or serogroups, of meningitis. Serogroups A, B, C, W, X, and Y are the primary\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/pubs\/surv-manual\/chpt08-mening.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">causes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of infection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What is meningitis B?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serogroup B can lead to meningococcal serogroup B disease, also known as meningitis B. Meningitis B causes meningitis (infection and swelling of the tissue covering the brain and spinal cord) or blood infection. Both types of symptoms can have life-long effects or even be deadly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Symptoms of meningitis include:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sudden onset of:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stiff neck<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other warning signs include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sensitivity to light<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confusion<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These symptoms may not be present in babies. Instead, babies may appear slow or inactive, irritable, vomiting, or feeding poorly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The symptoms of a blood infection (sepsis) may include:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever or chills\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tiredness (fatigue)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting or diarrhea\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cold hands and feet\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peeing less than usual<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe aches or pain in the muscles, joints, chest, or belly (abdomen)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rapid breathing\/pulse<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A dark purple rash<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bacterial meningococcal disease can be treated with antibiotics, but even with treatment, it is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/meningococcal\/downloads\/17-275138A-MeningococcalDis-FS.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fatal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in one to two out of every 10 people who contract the condition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seek medical attention immediately if you recognize any of the above symptoms of meningococcal disease. Often, symptoms mimic the flu, so it is best to be safe and get checked out. The best way to prevent the condition is through vaccination.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is Bexsero?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bexsero is a non-live, injected vaccine that helps to prevent infection from meningococcal disease caused by serogroup B. While Bexsero will not protect against all forms of meningococcal B disease, the effectiveness of Bexsero is an estimated 66% to 91% of circulating meningitis B strands.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Do you need a MenB vaccine if you\u2019ve had another meningitis vaccine?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/studenthealth.sa.ucsb.edu\/health-topics\/meningitis-b\/new-meningitis-b-vaccine\/meningitis-b-vaccine-faqs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There are two different types of meningitis vaccines. They protect against different types of meningococcal disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Meningococcal conjugate (MenACWY) vaccines<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/menactra\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Menactra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/menveo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Menveo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, protect against serogroups A, C, W, and Y. These vaccines are routinely given to children between ages 11 and 12, with a booster at age 16.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>MenB vaccines<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as Bexsero and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/trumenba\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trumenba<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are newer, and were approved at the end of 2014. They protect against serogroup B strains. To be fully vaccinated against the most common strains, you need both a conjugate vaccine and a MenB vaccine.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><b>Who should get the Bexsero vaccine?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bexsero is approved for anyone between ages 10 and 25. However, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/vpd\/mening\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CDC) recommends the meningococcal group B vaccines (Bexsero and Trumenba) for teens and young adults ages 16 to 25, and anyone else at increased risk of the disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children and adults are considered high risk, or more likely to become infected, in certain situations, including:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A serogroup B meningococcal disease outbreak<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Travel to places with high meningitis exposure risk<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ghr.nlm.nih.gov\/condition\/complement-component-2-deficiency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">complement component deficiency<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A damaged spleen or asplenia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment with Soliris (eculizumab)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/vpd\/mening\/public\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also recommends MenB vaccines for adults working as microbiologists who are regularly exposed to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neisseria meningitidis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Who should not get the Bexsero vaccine?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who are allergic to any of Bexsero\u2019s ingredients or who have had a severe allergic reaction to Bexsero before should not receive the vaccine. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should discuss getting the vaccine with a healthcare professional. Animal studies suggest that Bexsero is safe during pregnancy, but not enough information is available to declare it definitively safe for human pregnancies. It is recommended that the Bexsero vaccine be given to expectant mothers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/m.pdr.net\/Mobile\/Pages\/drug-summary\/Bexsero-meningococcal-group-B-vaccine-3677\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if necessary, for example, if the mother is at high risk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tip caps used for the prefilled syringes contain natural rubber latex, which may cause an adverse reaction in latex-sensitive individuals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who are acutely moderately or severely ill should wait until they are better to get the vaccine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bexsero may be safely given to individuals who are immunocompromised, but their immune system may respond weakly or have less of an immune response, which can reduce efficacy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How many doses of Bexsero are needed?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bexsero is administered intramuscularly\u2014it\u2019s injected into the muscle via syringe. Two doses of 0.5 ml are required for maximum protection, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/90996\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Food &amp; Drug Administration <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(FDA) guidelines. The doses should be given at least one month apart.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s best to get the second dose <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/studenthealth.sa.ucsb.edu\/health-topics\/meningitis-b\/new-meningitis-b-vaccine\/meningitis-b-vaccine-faqs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on schedule<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meaning as close to one month after the first dose as possible. The second vaccine dose is still effective when more than a month has passed since the previous dose of Bexsero. However, the effectiveness of the first dose wanes with time, so receiving the second dose in a timely manner helps make sure you\u2019re fully protected, faster.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Can Bexsero be given with other vaccines?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/vpd\/mening\/hcp\/administering-vaccine.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CDC says<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the MenB vaccine can be given at the same time as Tdap, HPV, and MenACWY vaccines. If given during the same visit, the vaccines should be administered in a different injection site and with different syringes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bexsero should <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/90996\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not be used interchangeably<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with other MenB vaccines to complete a vaccination series. The first dose of Bexsero must be followed by a second dose of Bexsero specifically.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Bexsero side effects<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the reported side effects of the Bexsero vaccine include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain at the injection site<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myalgia (muscle pain)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Erythema (redness)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Induration (a hardened formation under the skin)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arthralgia (joint pain)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These adverse events are usually mild and short-lived for vaccine recipients.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Is Bexsero safe?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes. Based on clinical trials and postmarketing studies involving more than 37,000 participants, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gskpro.com\/en-mt\/products\/bexsero\/safety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bexsero has a demonstrated safety profile.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>Bexsero vs Trumenba<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bexsero and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/trumenba\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trumenba<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are both recombinant serogroup B meningococcal vaccines. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/66\/wr\/mm6619a6.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are licensed in the United States for people ages 10 to 25. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices\u00a0(ACIP) does not state a preference between them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The side effects for both are similar, with injection site pain, fatigue, headache, muscle pain, and nausea among the most common.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though the two vaccines are similar, they are not interchangeable. Bexsero is a GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) brand while Trumenba is made by Pfizer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bexsero follows a two-dose schedule with one 0.5 ml dose followed by a second 0.5 ml dose administered one month later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trumenba has either a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/66\/wr\/mm6619a6.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two-dose schedule or a three-dose schedule<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Anyone ages 10 and up who is at an increased risk for serogroup B meningococcal disease should follow the three-dose schedule. After the initial dose, a second dose should be given at 1 to 2 months following the first dose, and a third dose should be given six months after the first dose. Healthy adolescents and young adults ages 16 to 23 who are not at increased risk for meningococcal disease should receive one dose followed by a second dose six months later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which one is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/programs\/vfc\/awardees\/vaccine-management\/price-list\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more cost-effective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> depends on the number of doses required. A full course of Bexsero costs approximately $341.50. Trumenba costs approximately $279.04 for the two-dose schedule, and approximately $418.56 for the three-dose schedule.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most important thing to remember about the two vaccines is that brands cannot be switched between doses. Whichever vaccine is given for the first dose must be used for any following doses.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How much does Bexsero cost?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CDC lists the cost of Bexsero for the private sector as $170.75 per dose, but this price can vary by pharmacy. The cost can also be reduced by using a SingleCare <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/bexsero\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coupon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at participating pharmacies. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/programs\/vfc\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Vaccines for Children (VFC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) program will cover the cost of the MenB vaccine (as well as other vaccines) for those who <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/programs\/vfc\/downloads\/resolutions\/2019-6-7-mening-508.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16 through 18 years of age<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10 through 18 years of age and identified as being at\u00a0increased risk\u00a0due to a medical condition<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10 through 18 years of age and identified as being at\u00a0increased risk\u00a0due to serogroup B meningococcal disease outbreak<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meningococcal disease is scary, and adolescents and young adults have a higher chance of being infected.
