It\u2019s probably just regular old dry skin. Or is it?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your skin could be affected by something else. After all, it\u2019s not uncommon for people to confuse dry skin with skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBoth of these mimic dry skin in certain ways, but there are ways to identify if you actually have one of these conditions,\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Todd Minars<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the University of Miami School of Medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How do you know the difference?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What could it be? Psoriasis vs. eczema? Psoriasis vs. dry skin? Eczema vs. dry skin? Learn how to recognize the differences between each condition so you can treat them appropriately.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Dry skin<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dry skin feels tight or rough, or sometimes itchy and flaky. It might be red and cracked. Sometimes, the cracks will even bleed, which can put you at risk for infection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Triggers: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the temperature drops, your skin notices. Cold winter air (and the heat inside your house) tends to dry out most people\u2019s skin. Hot baths and showers along with harsh, drying soaps and skin products can have a very similar effect, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/dry-skin\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20353885\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Mayo Clinic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Treatment:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You can typically treat most cases of dry skin at home. Apply a generous layer of a thick moisturizing lotion or cream frequently, especially after washing your hands or taking a shower.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Eczema<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly 32 million people in the United States have eczema. About 18 million have the most common type of this skin condition, atopic dermatitis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nationaleczema.org\/eczema\/types-of-eczema\/atopic-dermatitis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Eczema Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s more common in people with a family history of eczema. It typically develops in early childhood, and while some people \u201coutgrow\u201d their eczema, it can persist into adulthood. It causes a red, scaly rash, often on your legs and arms in places like the crooks of your knees and elbows. (It can also appear on your face.) Eczema is especially known for one defining characteristic: the itch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf I see a rash that is not itchy, it is not eczema,\u201d says Cheryl Bayart, MD, a dermatologist with the Cleveland Clinic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Triggers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The list of common triggers for eczema flare-ups typically includes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sweating<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Friction from clothes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harsh soaps and detergents<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fragrances<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smoke<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some children with moderate-to-severe cases of eczema <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3970830\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experience flare-ups<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when they eat certain foods, such as wheat or eggs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-eczema-treatment\/\"><b>Treatment<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>:<\/strong> It might not be a case of eczema vs. dry skin\u2014you might actually have eczema <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dry skin. Dry skin can make your eczema worse. So, a good rule of thumb is to start with a daily routine of using a gentle cleanser, then applying a thick moisturizer like Aquaphor or Eucerin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, you might benefit from a common first-line <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/eczema-treatment-and-medications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treatment for eczema<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: a topical steroid to help control the itching and moisturize your dry skin. An ointment containing hydrocortisone, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cortizone-10\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cortizone-10<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, can relieve the itch and bring some relief. You may experience discomfort, pain, or even itching as a result.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Triggers: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experts haven\u2019t pinpointed a cause for psoriasis yet, but we do know about some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aad.org\/flare-triggers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common triggers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for exacerbations, or flare-ups, of psoriasis:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Injuries to the skin, like cuts or scrapes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infections<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smoking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heavy alcohol use<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain medications<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamadermatology\/article-abstract\/2684587?guestAccessKey=8a0bf572-d01b-498a-9c73-72097ab68621\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests there could be a connection to gluten as a trigger, but only for people who are already sensitive to gluten.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Treatment: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to a moisturizer, your doctor may suggest applying a topical treatment such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corticosteroids<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin D analogs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin A derivatives<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Calcineurin inhibitors<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coal tar shampoos or creams<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthralin<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phototherapy is also an option. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aad.org\/diseases\/eczema\/child-difference-psoriasis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Academy of Dermatology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, children who get eczema tend to experience intense itching, while psoriasis is more likely to only cause mild itching.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Which is worse: eczema or psoriasis?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So which is worse? It can depend on the severity of your case and your point of view, says Dr. Bayart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou can have a very mild case of either that barely affects your life or have a severe case of either that can be completely debilitating,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may require some trial and error, but the right diagnosis and the right treatment can go a long way toward helping you manage. \u201cWhile it can certainly be frustrating and in some extreme cases, debilitating, most patients can achieve relief with the proper treatment plan and regain and enjoyable quality of life,\u201d says Dr. Minars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it\u2019s important to recognize that psoriasis is also linked to other serious health conditions, like heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. \u201cYour skin is telling you from the outside that you are at higher risk for those issues,\u201d says Dr. Bayart. \u201cYou need to be especially careful about your health.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first step is the right diagnosis.
