The average U.S. citizen spends <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd-ilibrary.org\/social-issues-migration-health\/health-at-a-glance-2015\/pharmaceutical-spending-trends-and-future-challenges_health_glance-2015-5-en;jsessionid=lQI5uajacNfO8SoGVQHFtJ0K.ip-10-240-5-171\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$1,025 per year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on medication\u2014that\u2019s an inflation-adjusted 11-fold increase since 1960, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthsystemtracker.org\/chart-collection\/recent-forecasted-trends-prescription-drug-spending\/#item-per-capita-spending-rx-hospital-physician-services_nhe-projections-2018-27\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the Peterson Center on Healthcare and Kaiser Family Foundation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s because prescriptions are expensive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 10 most commonly advertised drugs have list prices ranging from $488 to $16,938 per month or course of treatment, says the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/about\/news\/2019\/05\/08\/cms-drug-pricing-transparency-fact-sheet.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Department of Health and Human Services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And, our research shows that many oft-prescribed medications regularly cost much more than that.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, there are a lot of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">very<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> costly drugs out there. These are the most expensive drugs, according to SingleCare data. Afinitor<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>28-day supply price: $33,001.08<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Afinitor, a chemotherapy medication used to treat kidney, pancreatic, breast, and brain cancers, is one of the most expensive medications out there\u2014but those with a prescription need to have it for their treatment plan. Often, the duration of treatment with Afinitor is defined by the medical diagnosis. Patients diagnosed with Subependymal Giant Cell Astrocytoma received a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2011\/022344s9s10lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">median duration of treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 24.4 months. The median duration of treatment for patients diagnosed with Renal Cell Carcinoma is 141 days. That\u2019s a minimum cost of (gulp): $166, 184.01 for an average treatment cycle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, there is no generic alternative for the drug to help bring down the costs. A would-be generic manufacturer lost a patent case in courts <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.physiciansweekly.com\/novartis-defeats-challenge-to\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">earlier in 2019,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which would have allowed the formulation of a generic version. Cash-paying patients are beholden to the $33,000-plus price tag. But there are ways to save on Afinitor 5 mg tablets. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicare.gov\/Pubs\/pdf\/11931-Cancer-Treatment-Services.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">100 percent of Medicare Part D and Medicare Advantage plans cover this drug.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Humira<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>28-day supply price: $7,037.81<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Humira is an immunosuppressant used to treat arthritis, psoriasis, Crohn\u2019s disease, and ulcerative colitis. It\u2019s been the top-selling (aka the most profitable) drug in the nation since 2012, and shows no signs of slowing down. In 2018, Humira prescriptions topped more than $14 billion, which was an increase of more than 60% than the previous year\u2014despite the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/investigations\/2019\/08\/07\/biologic-drug-makers-pay-doctors-prescriptions\/1943331001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">controversial reputation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of biologic medications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/article-abstract\/2545691\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2016 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published by the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of the American Medical Association <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that found \u201cno evidence of an association between research and development costs and prices; rather, prescription drugs are priced in the United States primarily on the basis of what the market will bear.\u201d But still, Humira costs continue to rise. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he price of Humira has gone up from about $19,000 a year (in 2012) to more than $38,000 a year (in 2019), per patient, after rebates\u2014according to data reported by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/01\/06\/business\/humira-drug-prices.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York Times<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, from SSR Health, a research firm. That\u2019s an increase of 100 percent. But fo<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">r those who rely on the drug, there\u2019s good news coming in 2023: a biosimilar drug called Hyrimoz. Not to be confused with generic drugs, biosimilars <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/NewsEvents\/Newsroom\/PressAnnouncements\/ucm587378.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">highly similar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medications that are close enough in duplication to accomplish the same therapeutic and clinical results (while generics are chemically identical to the original medication). The FDA has approved <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.novartis.com\/news\/media-releases\/sandoz-receives-us-fda-approval-biosimilar-hyrimoztm-adalimumab-adaz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hyrimoz<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and it will be available for sale in the United States on September 30, 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Enbrel\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>28-day supply price: $4,944.95<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enbrel is a biopharmaceutical medication that is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and other autoimmune conditions. Just like Humira, Enbrel is seeing a rise in sales and prescriptions filled, despite the wallet-crippling cost. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enbrel\u2014which landed in the U.S. market in 1998\u2014recorded $4.8 billion in U.S. sales in 2018, according to manufacturer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/quotes.wsj.com\/AMGN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amgen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Inc.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, the drug manufacturer prices a year\u2019s supply of Enbrel\u2019s 50-mg dose at more than $67,000. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And there are no generics on the horizon to help ease costs for patients. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two biosimilars of Enbrel were approved by the FDA and have not been launched yet\u2014including one from Swiss drugmaker<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Novartis AG<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the health agency approved in 2016, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wall Street Journal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> health reporter <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/many-generic-drugs-havent-hit-market-hindering-cost-control-efforts-11574198448\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jared S. Hopkins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. More than 40 patents protect Enbrel, and its manufacturer, Amgen Inc., won a court ruling in August related to Enbrel patents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Xeljanz\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>30-day supply price: $4,694.13<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xeljanz is a popular biopharmaceutical that is prescribed to treat rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and ulcerative colitis. But recently, the drug made headlines because of the new FDA <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biospace.com\/article\/high-dose-of-pfizer-s-xeljanz-raises-red-flag-in-a-post-marketing-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">black-label warning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the JAK inhibitor&#8217;s 10-mg twice daily dose, which was formulated to ease joint pain and swelling,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> increases<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> risk of blood clots\u2014and potentially, death.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he drug\u2019s approval to treat ulcerative colitis has been nixed\u2014it&#8217;s now only approved for patients who do not respond to or are not suitable for other medicines. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But despite all the serious warnings surrounding the 10-mg dose, the 5-mg is still considered safe, and in turn has seen an increase in sales and use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Forteo<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>28-day supply price: $3,639.85<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forteo is an injectable medication that helps strengthen bones for people with osteoporosis who are at high risk of a fracture\u2014especially those with osteoporosis from taking steroids like prednisone. It\u2019s a synthetic form of a hormone naturally found in the body that promotes growth of new bone and increased bone density. Injections are typically taken in the thigh or belly.\u00a0 It\u2019s approved for up to 24 months of use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is currently no generic available. But, Pfenix won patent approval for a similar <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepharmaletter.com\/article\/us-competition-brewing-for-lilly-s-forteo-blockbuster\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">product<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which could drive the price down when it hits manufacturing. There are already two comparable treatments in Europe, but they have been blocked in the United States. If you need Forteo, there is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forteo.com\/savings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">manufacturer\u2019s discount<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> available for eligible patients.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Glatiramer Acetate Injection<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>30-day supply price: $3,378.50<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glatiramer acetate injection is the generic version of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/copaxone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Copaxone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an injectable medication used to treat multiple sclerosis and prevent MS relapse. Even as a generic, the price is high\u2014not much lower than the brand-name counterpart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the past 20 years, there have been big advances in MS treatment, but the increase in available treatment options has not led to a parallel decrease in prices. They have been escalating. From 2013 to 2018, the average median cost of disease modifying therapies like glatiramer acetate rose from $60,000 to $80,000 according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalmssociety.org\/Get-Involved\/Advocate-for-Change\/Current-Advocacy-Issues\/Affordability-of-and-Access-to-MS-Medications\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Multiple Sclerosis Society<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you\u2019re having trouble affording your medication, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.glatirameracetate.com\/en\/patient-support\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mylan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offers savings for certain people.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Norditropin Injection<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>30-day supply price: $3,377.89<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Norditropin is a synthetic growth hormone that imitates hormones in the pituitary gland that stimulate growth in the body: height, organs, bones, and muscles. When used for children who don\u2019t make enough growth hormone, it can help them become taller. For adults, it can stimulate muscle growth. When used for patients without a deficiency, it\u2019s not effective.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s considered a specialty medication, like those used to treat conditions such as cancer, HIV, or rheumatoid arthritis. These types of medication are typically more expensive, and norditropin is no exception. Novo Nordisk has a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.norditropin.com\/how-we-can-help\/product-support.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">patient assistance program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in place to help navigate insurance benefits and afford medications.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. Stribild<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>30-day supply price: $3,356.06<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stribild is a four-medication cocktail in one tablet used to treat HIV and lower the risk of transmitting the condition to others. It contains three antiretroviral medications and a medication that helps the others work better. Though pricey, there\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.managedcaremag.com\/archives\/2019\/4\/once-day-hiv-treatment-pricey-perhaps-worth-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some evidence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that once a day combination treatments for HIV are less expensive long term than some other options because they improve medication adherence in patients, which can lower risk of complications or expensive hospitalizations. The manufacturer of Stribild, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gileadadvancingaccess.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gilead<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, offers patient assistance programs if you\u2019re having trouble affording the treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9. Atripla<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>30-day supply price: $3,215.15<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atripla is another combination medication used to treat HIV, and lower the risk of transmitting the condition to others. It contains three medications. There is currently no generic version of this medication available, which keeps the price high. But, starting at the end of September 2020, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healio.com\/infectious-disease\/hiv-aids\/news\/online\/%7B62f21440-4f18-44cd-b0c9-fb011c28f531%7D\/gilead-says-generic-truvada-will-be-available-in-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teva Pharmaceuticals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is approved to launch generic versions, which could help to ameliorate the cost. The manufacturer of Atripla, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gileadadvancingaccess.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gilead<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, offers patient assistance programs if you\u2019re having trouble affording the treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10. New <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20191106005418\/en\/Gilead%E2%80%99s-Biktarvy-Maintained-High-Efficacy-Cases-Treatment-Emergent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows it\u2019s very effective in new patients, and patients switching from other medications, which has led to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiercepharma.com\/pharma\/gilead-riding-biktarvy-success-as-hiv-portfolio-overall-revenue-shows-signs-decline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nearly-quadrupling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sales of this medication in a single year despite the expense. Like other combination medications for HIV, there is some evidence that it reduces <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajmc.com\/conferences\/amcpnexus2018\/analysis-finds-hiv-therapy-biktarvy-associated-with-cost-savings-compared-with-most-regimens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long-term treatment costs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because of improved adherence. The manufacturer of Biktarvy, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gileadadvancingaccess.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gilead<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, offers patient assistance programs if you\u2019re having trouble affording the treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what\u2019s causing the high prices?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How (and why) is the cost for so many necessary medications get so high? It\u2019s complicated\u2014and impacted by a number of factors.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Brand-name medications<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The brand-name market is where medications are first created, and developing a new medication is an expensive and time-consuming process. \u201cBrands have patent and regulatory protection in their early market years, enabling manufacturers to take full advantage of demand for their novel treatments, and reward investors for their patience and high cost of research and development,\u201d explains Dana Goldman, director&#8217;s chair at the USC Schaeffer Center for Health Policy and Economics and Professor of Public Policy, Pharmacy, and Economics. In other words, prices of new treatments are high because of the high cost of bringing them to market.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Generic medications<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the generic market, it\u2019s a different story. When a patent on a new drug ends, manufacturers can create a generic version and sell it for a much lower price because the original developer has recouped costs. Yet, occasionally, generics are just as expensive as their branded counterparts, such as the sudden price sprike for the antimalarial drug <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/daraprim?q=Daraprim\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daraprim<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which made the news in 2015.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Martin Shkreli and Turing Pharmaceuticals took the $13.50 per pill Daraprim (which has been available since the 1950s) and increased the price to $750 per pill.\u00a0 Shrkeli could do this because the price of Daraprim had dropped so low that all the suppliers had opted out.
