Now we\u2019re taking a closer look at the most prescribed drugs for 2019\u2014and while many of them overlap, there are a couple of new additions.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More notably, though, is what this current list of drugs tells us about prescription medication use across the board in the United States. Why are some drugs prescribed more often than others? Is a drug\u2019s popularity good or bad? What health conditions are the most common among Americans?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To find the answers to these questions, we asked two physicians to weigh in on the top drugs of the year and share their insights about the trends. Here\u2019s what they had to say.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generic vs. brand-name drugs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every one of the prescription drugs on the 2019 list is available in generic form, which makes them relatively cheap and easy to obtain, says David Cutler, MD, a family medicine physician at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.providence.org\/locations\/saint-johns-health-center\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Providence Saint John\u2019s Health Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey are not the novel, blockbuster, money-making drugs you read about on the front pages,\u201d he says. \u201cThey are the drugs in everybody\u2019s medicine cabinet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why is this significant? For starters, name-brand drugs drive up both patient out-of-pocket costs and the societal costs of health insurance, says Joshua Septimus, MD, internist at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonmethodist.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Houston Methodist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Since generic drugs are widely accepted as being just as good as name-brand ones, the shift toward generic prescriptions is a positive one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m so pleased to see that doctors are getting away from name-brand medications because there was a time when doctors were largely writing prescriptions for very expensive ones,\u201d Dr. Septimus explains. \u201cBut now the widely prescribed meds are generic, and they\u2019re cheap and have long-standing data to go with them.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do the most prescribed drugs tell us?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interestingly, the most prescribed drugs of 2019 fall into a handful of common categories: blood pressure medications, thyroid treatments, antibiotics, and ADHD medications.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This makes sense, says Dr. Septimus, since high blood pressure and hypothyroidism are two of the most common adult diseases. As for the other medications? And that\u2019s not the only reason high blood pressure meds like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/amlodipine-besylate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amlodipine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lisinopril\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lisinopril<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are so popular right now, either.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe diagnostic criteria defining who has hypertension have been lowered, bringing more people into the category of being diagnosed with high blood pressure,\u201d explains Dr. Cutler.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He\u2019s referring to a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acc.org\/latest-in-cardiology\/articles\/2017\/11\/08\/11\/47\/mon-5pm-bp-guideline-aha-2017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2017 update<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to guidelines previously established in 2003; the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association removed a \u201cprehypertension\u201d category and reorganized other stage classifications for hypertension. It was estimated that this shift would classify many more people as having high blood pressure, especially younger adults, and could lead to earlier intervention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As far as these two drugs go, Dr. Septimus says that both ACE inhibitors (like lisinopril) and calcium channel blockers (like amlodipine) are acceptable ways to treat high blood pressure, with amlodipine being an easy-to-use medication with low side effects<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and lisinopril a safer option for people who also have diabetes or heart disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"Amoxicillin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amoxicillin<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b>Most commonly prescribed for:<\/b> <b>Bacterial infections of the ear, nose, and throat<\/b><br \/>\n<b>Most popular prescription in: California, Washington, D.C., Maryland, New Jersey, Texas<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Septimus calls <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/amoxicillin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amoxicillin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a \u201cbedrock of therapy\u201d for respiratory infections, including ear infections and strep throat, which helps explain why it was the most popular drug in four states this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you look at where most antibiotics scripts are written, it\u2019s in children, since they tend to be treated frequently for those conditions,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While anyone who\u2019s ever spent time around children knows they are magnets for viruses and infections, there is still some concern among physicians about the rate at which antibiotics are prescribed\u2014especially when they\u2019re used to treat viral infections rather than bacterial ones, which contributes to increasing rates of antibiotic resistance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are extensive efforts underway to reduce unnecessary exposure to antibiotics through <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acc.org\/latest-in-cardiology\/articles\/2017\/11\/08\/11\/47\/mon-5pm-bp-guideline-aha-2017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stewardship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> programs,\u201d Dr. Cutler says. \u201cPeople need to be made more aware of the dangers posed by excessive, unnecessary, and harmful antibiotic use.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"Levothyroxine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Levothyroxine sodium and Synthroid<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b>Most commonly prescribed for:<\/b> <b>Hypothyroidism<\/b><br \/>\n<b>Most popular prescription in: Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid stops making enough hormone to regulate key body functions, affects roughly<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acc.org\/latest-in-cardiology\/articles\/2017\/11\/08\/11\/47\/mon-5pm-bp-guideline-aha-2017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">five out of every 100 Americans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, per The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLow thyroid function is most commonly an autoimmune condition with no known trigger or prevention,\u201d Dr. Cutler says, adding that the signs can be subtle, such as fatigue or constipation. People with hypothyroidism may also experience joint or muscle pain, dry skin, irregular menstruation, or weight gain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/levothyroxine-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Levothyroxine sodium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is what\u2019s known as a thyroid replacement, and Dr. Septimus says it\u2019s popular because there really aren\u2019t any other drugs that can replace the missing thyroid hormone. Thankfully, he also says levothyroxine sodium has a high rate of effectiveness and helps the majority of patients who take it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"Amphetamine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amphetamine-dextroamphetamine (generic Adderall)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b>Most commonly prescribed for:<\/b> <b>ADHD<\/b><br \/>\n<b>Most popular prescription in: Michigan, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Utah<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/amphetamine-dextroamphetamine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amphetamine-dextroamphetamine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is commonly prescribed for the treatment of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acc.org\/latest-in-cardiology\/articles\/2017\/11\/08\/11\/47\/mon-5pm-bp-guideline-aha-2017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can range from hyperactivity and difficulty concentrating to fidgeting and poor judgment, according to Dr. Septimus. Along with the fact that more people are being diagnosed with ADHD,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acc.org\/latest-in-cardiology\/articles\/2017\/11\/08\/11\/47\/mon-5pm-bp-guideline-aha-2017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">including young children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this drug\u2019s popularity continues to grow because it\u2019s generally considered safe and effective\u2014and is now available in generic form.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exact mechanism of how amphetamine-dextroamphetamine helps patients (aside from working in the central nervous system) is not fully understood, but according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acc.org\/latest-in-cardiology\/articles\/2017\/11\/08\/11\/47\/mon-5pm-bp-guideline-aha-2017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADDitude Magazine<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the drug has been extensively studied for decades and appears not to cause major health concerns for the majority of patients who take it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The outliers<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The remaining drugs on 2019\u2019s list don\u2019t fit into any of the above categories, but were the number one prescribed drug in their respective states.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"vitaminD\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prescription vitamin D<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b>Most commonly prescribed for: <\/b><b>Vitamin D deficiency<\/b><br \/>\n<b>Most popular prescription in: New York<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prescription <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vitamin-d-400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin D<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the top drug in New York, is used to treat vitamin D deficiency. But Dr. Septimus says the fact that it\u2019s being prescribed so commonly indicates that physicians are still proactively screening for vitamin D, a practice the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acc.org\/latest-in-cardiology\/articles\/2017\/11\/08\/11\/47\/mon-5pm-bp-guideline-aha-2017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Preventive Services Task Force<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has advised against. While taking prescription vitamin D might be necessary for a handful of patient populations (like those with osteoporosis), it\u2019s likely being prescribed unnecessarily in many other cases.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"Prednisone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prednisone<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b>Most commonly prescribed for: <\/b><b>Inflammation<\/b><br \/>\n<b>Most popular prescription in: Maine<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prescribing patterns for respiratory tract infections like bronchitis, pneumonia, and sinusitis is probably why so much <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prednisone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prednisone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was doled out in Maine this year. A corticosteroid that treats a variety of inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, Dr. Septimus says that some doctors are simply more likely to rely on it when a patient complains of swelling, pain, or discomfort because of an acute or chronic condition. Taking prednisone can lead to several <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acc.org\/latest-in-cardiology\/articles\/2017\/11\/08\/11\/47\/mon-5pm-bp-guideline-aha-2017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which become more severe the longer you take it, so it\u2019s good that it isn\u2019t being overused across the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"Alprazolam\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alprazolam<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b>Most commonly prescribed for: <\/b><b>Anxiety<\/b><br \/>\n<b>Most popular prescription in: Tennessee<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For fast relief of symptoms associated with panic attacks or phobias, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/alprazolam\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alprazolam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is typically prescribed to help people cope with acute situations such as traveling by plane when you have a fear of flying. While Xanax can be prescribed for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/anxiety-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chronic anxiety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or other anti-anxiety medications are more likely to be utilized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for why alprazolam (Xanax) might be so popular, Dr. Septimus says it works more quickly than other drugs in its class, making it ideal for conditions that require a quick onset of action.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[However], that also makes its addiction potential far higher,\u201d he warns. \u201cIt\u2019s a good drug when used safely, but judiciously.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"Sildenafil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sildenafil<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b>Most commonly prescribed for: <\/b><b>Erectile dysfunction<\/b><br \/>\n<b>Most popular prescription in: Hawaii<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/sildenafil-citrate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sildenafil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a.k.a. the erectile dysfunction pill <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/viagra\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Viagra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was the top prescribed drug in Hawaii this year. Overall, experts know that sildenafil is being prescribed more frequently because it benefitted from a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acc.org\/latest-in-cardiology\/articles\/2017\/11\/08\/11\/47\/mon-5pm-bp-guideline-aha-2017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">major drop in cost back in 2017<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when it became available in generic form.
