With patients in the United States requiring blood <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">every two seconds,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the nation\u2019s blood banks constantly seek volunteer donors to maintain a readily available blood supply.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-donate-blood\"><b>Why donate blood?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA single blood donation can save the lives of up to three people,\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ross Coyle<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, spokesperson for the Stanford Blood Center, an independent community blood center in Palo Alto, California. \u201cBlood donations are typically down during the winter and summer months due to weather and vacations, yet the need for blood donations is a year-round issue.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to helping others, donating blood also benefits donors. Studies show that donating blood can improve heart health by lowering <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cholesterol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and reducing the risk of a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart attack.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-donated-blood-used-for\"><b>What is donated blood used for?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.holy-cross.com\/provider\/john-p-cunha-do-emergency-medicine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John Cunha, DO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an emergency medicine physician at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, says blood donations are critical for many reasons and needed for both emergencies and long-term treatments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDonated blood is used for trauma patients such as those injured in natural disasters or mass tragedies, cancer patients who require blood transfusions, and those who lose blood during major surgeries,\u201d Dr. Cunha says. \u201cYou never know when you or a loved one might need a blood donation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-i-donate-blood\"><b>Can I donate blood?<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"what-are-the-requirements-for-donating-blood\"><b>What are the requirements for donating blood?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All blood banks maintain eligibility requirements for potential donors in order to protect both the blood donor and recipient. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ross-coyle-1pr\/\">Coyle<\/a> says those who are interested in becoming a blood donor should consider the following and advises contacting your local blood bank if you have additional questions:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Age:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Blood donors must be at least 17 years old (or 16 in some states with a signed parental consent form). Coyle says there\u2019s no upper age limit to donating blood as long as you\u2019re in good health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Weight:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Blood donors should be in good health and weigh at least 110 pounds. There is no upper weight limit.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"what-will-disqualify-you-from-giving-blood\"><b>What will disqualify you from giving blood?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There aren\u2019t a lot of requirements around who <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> donate blood, but there are many conditions that can prevent you from donating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Anemia:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Experts say <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3944402\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low hemoglobin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> levels (less than 12.5 g\/dL) is the number one reason people are unable to donate blood. If you have a low hemoglobin level, the blood bank may suggest consulting with your healthcare provider on how to raise your levels and then returning in the future to donate blood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Fear:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Some attribute their reluctance to donate blood to anxieties about the process, such as a needle phobia or fear of fainting. Coyle says donating blood is safe. And it only takes about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/givingequalsliving\/giveblood\/giving-process\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> minutes. The majority of donors feel fine afterward and have no side effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Pregnancy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Blood cannot be donated during pregnancy or for six weeks after giving birth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>LGBTQ donors:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">current <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redcrossblood.org\/donate-blood\/how-to-donate\/eligibility-requirements\/lgbtq-donors.html\">FDA policy<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0says that all donors, regardless of sexual orientation or gender, can\u2019t donate blood if any of the following are true:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The donor reports having a new sexual partner in the last three months.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The donor has had more than one sexual partner in the last three months.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The donor has had anal sex in the past three months.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This policy replaces the previous guidelines that gay and bisexual men could not donate blood unless sexually abstinent for the past 12 months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Tattoos and piercings:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In most states, if a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/clinicalcenter.nih.gov\/blooddonor\/about_donating_blood.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tattoo or ear\/body piercing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was done by a licensed facility and professional in your state using sterile needles and non-reused ink, there is no deferral period. In states that don\u2019t regulate tattoo facilities, there may be a deferment period. Check with your local blood bank for more info.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>International travel:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Coyle says those who have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stanfordbloodcenter.org\/travel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">traveled or lived in another country<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may receive a deferral period based on whether they might have been exposed to an emerging infectious disease. For example, having the Ebola virus makes candidates ineligible to donate blood. Exposure to mosquito-borne illnesses such as dengue or chikungunya may result in a deferment until symptoms resolve.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, people who have traveled or lived in countries where <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/prepare-prevent-malaria-traveling-abroad\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">malaria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> transmission occurs <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will also receive a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/malaria\/screening\/\">deferment of 1-3 years<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Medications:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you\u2019re taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">certain prescriptions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as blood thinners, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-do-antibiotics-work\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antibiotics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, medications for multiple sclerosis and cancer, and other health conditions, you might receive a deferral from a blood bank ranging from a week to several months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Certain health conditions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Patients currently undergoing cancer treatment, or who had hepatitis\/jaundice after the age of 11, a cold or flu within the last two days, or a blood transfusion within the past year are not eligible to donate blood. Individuals with possible exposure to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merckmanuals.com\/home\/multimedia\/table\/some-conditions-that-disqualify-people-from-donating-blood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (mad cow disease) are also ineligible. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, some forms of heart and lung disease, neurological diseases, Hepatitis B and C, HIV infection (AIDS), or other sexually-transmitted diseases also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mskcc.org\/about\/get-involved\/donating-blood\/additional-donor-requirements\/medical-conditions-affecting-donation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prevent a person from donating blood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, if donating blood is your favorite good deed, be aware of the waiting period. You should wait eight weeks between blood donations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>COVID-19 vaccine:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve received the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redcrossblood.org\/donate-blood\/dlp\/coronavirus--covid-19--and-blood-donation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID-19 vaccine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you can donate blood if you are feeling well. Depending on which brand of vaccine you received, you may need to follow a specific deferral time before donating.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donors who have received an inactivated or RNA-based vaccine or booster by AstraZeneca, Janssen\/J&amp;J, Moderna, Novavax, or Pfizer do not have to wait to donate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donors who aren\u2019t sure which vaccine or booster they\u2019ve received or who have received a live attenuated COVID-19 vaccine or booster have to wait two weeks before donating.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"how-do-i-prepare-to-donate-blood\"><b>How do I prepare to donate blood?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To find a blood donation center, blood drive, or mobile blood drive near you\u2014and to schedule an appointment\u2014visit the American Red Cross\u2019s \u201cFind a Drive\u201d page <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redcrossblood.org\/give.html\/find-drive\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Before your blood or plasma donation follow these important <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">steps<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get eight hours of sleep the night before your appointment so that you\u2019re well-rested.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drink at least 16 ounces of water prior to your appointment time to reduce the risk of dehydration, low blood pressure, and fainting.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eat a healthy meal, including foods rich in vitamin C and iron. Avoid fatty foods prior to your donation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bring a photo ID to your appointment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dress in short sleeves or wear long sleeves that can be rolled up easily\u2014comfort is key!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you arrive at your appointment, you\u2019ll undergo a health check that may take 30-45 minutes. A whole blood donation will take about 15 minutes, but if you\u2019re making a plasma or platelet donation, the process will take longer\u2014about 80-120 minutes. Here\u2019s what to expect during the donation process:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Registration entails signing in with your ID and reading information about the process.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To confirm your eligibility, you\u2019ll fill out a donor history questionnaire, including information about recent travel, your overall health, and your lifestyle.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A health check will be performed to check your blood pressure, temperature, pulse, red blood cell, and\/or hemoglobin levels.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your arm will be cleaned and sterilized, and you\u2019ll remain comfortably seated for the duration of the donation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After your donation is complete, you\u2019ll stay at the donation site for 10-15 minutes, where you\u2019ll be given a drink and snack.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid strenuous activity for four hours after your donation, and leave your bandage on for a few hours afterward. When you remove it, wash your arm with soap and water.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may feel dizzy, lightheaded, or fatigued, and you may experience bleeding, bruising, or pain. If severe symptoms occur, reach out to a healthcare provider.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"what-happens-after-blood-donation\"><b>What happens after blood donation?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once your blood arrives at a processing center, it is scanned into a computer database. It then undergoes the following preparation <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redcrossblood.org\/donate-blood\/blood-donation-process\/what-happens-to-donated-blood.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">process<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your donation will most likely be separated into red blood cells, plasma, and platelets by being spun in a centrifuge, with plasma being further processed into smaller components.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Platelets and red cells undergo a process called leukoreduction in which white blood cells are removed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each of the separate components is packaged into standardized units for transfusions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the units of blood are ready, they are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redcrossblood.org\/biomedical-services\/blood-diagnostic-testing\/blood-testing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tested<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for blood type, atypical red blood cell antibodies, and markers of several diseases including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trypanosoma cruzi, a parasite<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hepatitis B virus (HBV)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hepatitis C virus (HCV 3.0)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Human Immunodeficiency Virus Types 1 and Type 2 (HIV 1,2)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Human T-Lymphotropic virus (HTLV-1\/2)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Syphilis bacteria (Treponema pallidum)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zika virus (ZIKV)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">West Nile virus (WNV)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Babesia, a parasite<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/blood-safety\/about\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there is a constant and critical need for blood. If you\u2019re eligible and healthy, consider giving blood.
