It\u2019s not exactly a recipe for crushing your fitness goals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On top of all that, an underactive thyroid slows your body\u2019s metabolism, which means it\u2019s likely you\u2019re gaining weight, but just don\u2019t have the energy to work out. In short: hypothyroidism and exercise don\u2019t seem like a natural combination. But, when your condition is well-controlled with medication, exercise <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> help you feel better.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-exercise-cure-hypothyroidism\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can exercise cure hypothyroidism?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No, exercise won\u2019t make your thyroid produce more thyroid hormone, or reverse the condition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changing one\u2019s exercise plan or diet won\u2019t affect the course of an autoimmune disease, says Marie Bellantoni, MD, who specializes in endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore. She\u2019s quick to tell her patients, \u201cIf someone knew what caused an autoimmune disease or how to selectively control the immune system, that person would be collecting their Nobel Prize in medicine.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/hypothyroidism-treatment-and-medications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypothyroidism treatment<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"treating-hypothyroidism-with-medication\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treating hypothyroidism with medication<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The appropriate treatment is the medication that replaces the hormone your body doesn\u2019t produce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe treat hypothyroidism with synthetic thyroid hormone medication,\u201d says David Bleich, MD, professor and chief of endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Newark, New Jersey. \u201cIt\u2019s simple, safe, and effective and you need to work with your doctor to find the right dose.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When treated properly, medication can improve symptoms of hypothyroidism, including: low energy, fatigue, dry skin, thinning hair, weight gain, elevated cholesterol, depression or mood changes, aches and stiffness in joints, muscle weakness, irregular or heavier than normal periods, infertility, increased sensitivity to cold, constipation, slowed heart rate, impaired memory, hoarseness, or having an enlarged thyroid gland.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"foods-to-avoid-with-thyroid-medication\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foods to avoid with thyroid medication<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with hypothyroidism usually take thyroid hormone replacement medications daily for the rest of their lives.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It\u2019s best to take the pill on an empty stomach. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Bellantoni recommends 30 minutes before or four hours after a meal and at least two to four hours apart from any iron or calcium containing supplements. \u201cThat way your body will be better able to absorb the medication,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s because some foods can interfere with the absorption of your thyroid medication. The two that people commonly avoid are soy and iodine-rich foods.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16571087\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, however, shows either no adverse effects or only very modest changes in effectiveness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNothing bad will happen to you if you forget and take your meds and supplements at the same time,\u201d explains Dr. Bellantoni. \u201cBut that day you may only absorb between 60% and 70% of the levothyroxine pill.\u201d This explains why people will have lower thyroid levels despite taking their thyroid medication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/thyroid-medication-interactions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5 things that can mess with thyroid medication<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"hypothyroidism-and-exercise\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypothyroidism and exercise<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily medication is the only way to return your thyroid levels to normal. Yet, exercise can have beneficial effects for people with hypothyroidism\u2014and help fight negative effects of certain symptoms, such as weight gain, depression, stiffness, joint aches, and muscle weakness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe most important thing that one can do for hypothyroidism is to follow-up with your doctor and make sure that you\u2019re placed on the right dose of thyroid medication, but the next step on your list of things to do should be exercise,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.palomahealth.com\/provider\/dr-yasmin-akhunji\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yasmin Akhunji, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a thyroid specialist with Paloma Health. \u201cRegular exercise is a vital part in managing hypothyroid symptoms.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you have an underactive thyroid, committing to an exercise routine can help to:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-improve-energy-levels\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Improve energy levels.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the first symptoms people notice about hypothyroidism is tiredness, or low energy. The condition can make you feel sluggish. Medication can help alleviate that. In addition, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18277063\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that low impact exercise can reduce fatigue. Just be sure not to push yourself too hard. It slows your body\u2019s metabolism, which makes it hard to lose weight\u2014even when you eat right. \u201cExercise burns calories and can improve weight gain which can counter sluggish metabolisms,\u201d explains Dr. Akhunji.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-build-muscle-mass\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Build muscle mass.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypothyroidism can breakdown muscles, and cause muscle cramps or weakness. When you\u2019ve got your condition under control, it\u2019s time to build them back up\u2014with strength training. Lifting weights or using your body weight as resistance strengthens your body. \u201cThis will help you build muscle mass. Muscle burns more calories than fat, and this benefit continues on even during rest,\u201d says Dr. Akhunji.\u00a0 That can help weight loss along, too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-ease-joint-pain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Ease joint pain.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joint pain is an unfortunate side effect of hypothyroidism. Low impact exercises, like swimming, tai chi, or yoga, can help ease that painful feeling. When you build muscle with exercise, it lifts some of the stress on your joints, making movement less painful.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-relieve-symptoms-of-depression\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Relieve symptoms of depression.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/depression-treatment-and-medications\">Depression<\/a> can go hand-in-hand with hypothyroidism. Exercise is a natural remedy for low moods. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/30334597\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show that 45 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic exercise, three times a week has a significant effect on mood. \u201cWorkouts also increase your body\u2019s release of endorphins, which are known to enhance mood,\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Akhunji.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once your condition is under control (with medication), you\u2019ll have more energy to tackle a workout regimen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"what-type-of-exercise-is-best\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What type of exercise is best?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choose an activity you enjoy. It can include walking, hiking, running, swimming, or working out in a gym. \u201cA program of low impact aerobics exercise and strength training is probably the best type of exercise for hypothyroidism,\u201d explains <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Akhunji.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cLow impact aerobics can increase heart rate without putting too much exertion on your joints. A recumbent bike, elliptical machine, or even just walking is great choices for cardio workouts.Yoga and Pilates also can improve core muscle strength and help ease some back and hip pain.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try to stick to your fitness plan for 30 to 60 minutes three times a week, and combine that with healthy eating. \u201cAs always I recommend starting slowly and building up as you progress\u2014always talk to your doctor about what is safe for you,\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Akhunji.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cRemember, if you injure yourself early, you\u2019re much less likely to stick to your routine. Progression, not perfection should be the goal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercise won\u2019t change your thyroid.
