The dry, cold weather that saps the moisture out of the air also makes the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/can-best-combat-effects-dry-winter-air\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">water in your skin evaporate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more quickly. For people who take certain medications, however, skin problems can be much worse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood pressure drugs, cholesterol medications, acne treatments, wrinkle creams, and antihistamines when taken long-term, are all medications that cause dry skin. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?hl=en&amp;lr=&amp;id=hQZ0DwAAQBAJ&amp;oi=fnd&amp;pg=PA185&amp;dq=medications+cause+dry+skin+diuretics&amp;ots=85eZaWBfA6&amp;sig=rBB1rqUpnRYFIOe9K72rZXfWKyQ#v=onepage&amp;q=medications%20cause%20dry%20skin%20diuretics&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elderly patients<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who take these medications are at an even higher risk for skin complications because their skin is already more fragile. They may also take multiple medications with compounding side effects. Put those blood pressure pills together with cholesterol medication and you\u2019ve got a dry skin double whammy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how do you keep your skin soft and supple when your medications you need are drying you out? We checked in with some experts to find out.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medications that cause dry skin<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Diuretics<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDiuretics can definitely dry your skin,\u201d says Robin Evans, MD, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.socodermatology.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dermatologist in Stamford, Connecticut<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThese medications are used to treat high blood pressure, cardiac conditions, and liver and other problems that cause fluid to accumulate in the body.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diuretics work by helping rid your body of salt and water. These drugs help your kidneys release more sodium into your urine. The sodium carries out water from your blood, which decreases the amount of fluid flowing through your blood vessels. This brings down your blood pressure, but it also dehydrates your body. Any time your body is short on water, that results in dry skin.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Statins<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA popular type of high cholesterol medicine called a statin can cause skin changes including dry skin,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/nonye-uddoh-1b97873a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nonye Uddoh<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pharm.D., a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pharmacist in Silver Spring, Maryland<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Statins can make your skin more porous, allowing more water to escape, which in turn dries your skin. In some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/cridm\/2017\/3418204\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">severe cases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, statins have been known to cause a dry skin rash and flaky skin that mimics eczema. Some examples of statins include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lipitor\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lipitor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/atorvastatin-calcium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atorvastatin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zocor\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zocor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/simvastatin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">simvastatin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lescol-xl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lescol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fluvastatin-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fluvastatin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pravachol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pravachol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pravastatin-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pravastatin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/crestor\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crestor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/rosuvastatin-calcium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rosuvastatin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and Mevacor or Altocor (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lovastatin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lovastatin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Antihistamines<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOther medications that can cause dry skin include antihistamines like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/benadryl-allergy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benadryl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d says Dr. Uddoh. There are histamine receptors in your skin, that trigger it to produce oil. Antihistamines can slow skin\u2019s oil production, making it dryer in the process. Long-term use can result in dry, itchy skin.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Acne medication<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Evans explains that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/isotretinoin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accutane<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/retin-a\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Retin-A<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are both used to treat acne, but they work in different ways. Accutane comes in a capsule and is taken orally. It is often prescribed for severe acne that hasn\u2019t responded to other treatments. It decreases oil production in the skin, which results in dryness all over the body.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDry lips are the most common side effect seen with Accutane, likely seen in 100% of patients,\u201d says Dr. Evans. \u201cDryness of the rest of the skin surface and other mucous membranes is also frequently seen although not in 100% of patients.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Retin-A (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/retin-a\/what-is\">What is Retin-A?<\/a>), on the other hand, is a topical cream that expels your old skin cells and forces new ones to form rapidly. Dry skin patches and skin peeling are possible side effects of this medication. Dr. Evans tells us that it is \u201cused to treat acne primarily but also has cosmetic benefits including treating fine lines and wrinkles, and also can be used to treat pre-skin cancers called actinic keratoses.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe formulation and strength of this prescription topical product must be selected by your dermatologist to be appropriate for your skin type,\u201d Dr. Evans says. \u201cIf your skin is very sensitive and is rosacea prone, you may not be able to tolerate it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription-discount-card\"><b>Prescription discount card<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to prevent or treat medication-induced dry skin<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!\u201d says Dr. Evans. \u201cDrink a lot of water, avoid caffeine, and minimize alcohol, both of which are dehydrating.\u201d She also recommends that patients take flaxseed oil tablets and eat at a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids for dry skin treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Uddoh agrees that hydration is important. \u201cPatients should increase water intake until their urine runs clear.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, what\u2019s the best moisturizer for dry skin? The dosage form often makes a difference. Dr. Uddoh recommends using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/eucerin\">Eucerin<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/aquaphor\">Aquaphor<\/a> moisturizing lotion for dry skin. These are best applied on damp skin right after a shower to help lock in moisture. Lotions are ideal for daytime use since they don\u2019t tend to leave an unpleasant, greasy film after applied. Ointments may be considered for nighttime use as they generally have a thick consistency that is not easily rubbed off with clothing or water and can provide a sustained effect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the case of Retin-A, Dr. Evans says that the dosing schedule can be altered to help ease side effects like dry skin. \u201cRetin-A can be used on a less frequent basis at the start of treatment with frequency of application increased over time as the skin tolerates it better,\u201d she suggests. She also says that patients who experience skin irritation from Retin-A might consider using an over-the-counter treatment called retinol, but the results will be minimal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Uddoh says that sometimes, patients might have to talk to their doctors about changing medications if dry skin\u2014or any other side effect\u2014becomes unmanageable. \u201cMy recommendation to everyone, especially seniors on multiple medications, is to consult with a pharmacist yearly to review your medicines, identify troublesome side effects, and initiate alternatives with your doctor\u2019s approval.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2018Tis the season for dry, itchy, winter skin.
